From School Library Journal

POPK-Gr 3—An open field in a lush Caribbean setting calls to a group of children. They chase away grazing animals, bring out the soccer ball and goals, and begin a spirited game of soccer. Rain and a muddy, slippery field cannot stop their game; only the repeated calls from the mamas and a setting sun can. Dirty but satisfied, the children return home for baths and bed, knowing that the field will call again for another rousing game. Illustrations in deep, saturated colors with energetic lines accompany a spare but rhythmic English text, sprinkled with Creole. The narrative and images evoke the islands and the joy of playing a game regardless of weather. In a concluding note, Paul recalls his native Saint Lucia where, he explains, Creole is spoken but is rarely written down. A brief glossary is included, though most of the words will be understandable in context and in the animated paintings. VERDICT This engaging book is sure to resonate with children who are passionate about soccer and even those who simply enjoy lively play.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

Review

*STARRED REVIEW. Gather around for a boisterous game of futbol in Paul and Alcántara's excellent picture-book debut...Irresistible fun.  (Vicky Smith Kirkus Reviews)The only thing you have to bring to this story is a love of good books, and a capacity to be wowed when a debut team pulls out a book as cool as this. A story so good you’ll be half tempted to pull your own soccer ball out of the shed and take it to the nearest muddy park for a spin. A true original. (Elizabeth Bird School Library Journal, A Fuse #8 Production)*STARRED REVIEW. The excitement of the game overflows from the pages and the children, from the beautiful greenery that surrounds them and the brightness of their clothing, to the dynamic movement in Alcántara’s artwork...Staccato phrases match high energy of the impromptu game. (Booklist)*STARRED REVIEW. Vibrant illustrations, full of movement and saturated with color, match the vigor and excitement of the text.  (Martha V. Parravano The Horn Book)This is a wonderful debut picture book for both the author and the illustrator. It is sure to be one that will be begged for over and over again, whether soccer fan or not. (Maria Marshall The Picture Book Buzz)The children’s elongated, exaggerated movements create an almost constant sense of motion in Alcántara’s vividly colored paintings, and their enthusiasm for futbol is infectious.  (Publishers Weekly)

A very well-illustrated, fun story for the little ones. Football is the most universally relatable sport (in my opinion) and this book brings some of that diversity in a short and sweet story to the kids. Baptise and Jacqueline have done a very good job in making this an accessible book. The use of Creole words, complete with a glossary of such words, is a nice touch as well. I recently gave this book as a gift and the parents instantly loved it. I am sure their child will love it just as much if not more :)

This book is so simple yet provides a powerful experience that really speaks to me as a Haitian-American. I used to go to Haiti every summer and although I didn’t play soccer in the fields, it brought me back to the days when I was a kid playing all day and getting caught in the rain. The rain never stopped us from continuing to play. And then going home at the end of the day to a hot bath and a hot meal. This book can relate to anyone’s childhood. It evokes that feeling of innocence; the feeling of excitement and suspense. Great book. I literally am going to buy copies for my family and friends. Btw- it’s one of my sons favorite books. He loves when I shout, “Goal!!!!”

I recently bought this book about an exciting game of soccer (futbol) on an island in the Caribbean for my 5 year old niece. The minimal text (with several Creole words and phrases whose meaning is made clear) reflects the spontaneity of the game and the bold illustrations burst with energy. While I haven’t played much soccer, this book evoked great childhood memories of the sheer joy of playing other games outdoors with cousins and friends and the reluctance we had to come indoors when our mothers called. My niece loves The Field and I love reading it to her. The delightful detail in the illustrations (cows and goats in the playing field, mud soaked clothes, homes up on stilts) give us so much to talk about. I’ve frequently seen my niece pick up the book and read it on her own. For me, that’s the ultimate test of a good book for kids.

Brilliant use of English and Creole over the universal game of soccer (futbol)! My soccer loving kids who wish they could play in the rain loved learning about the game in another culture. We scream GOAL! together. Jacqueline Alcantara's illustrations are vibrant and moving as well.

Fun text, beautiful illustrations. Wouldn’t be surprised if this wins some awards. I think teachers will appreciate a book that incorporates Creole (patois) language that is spoken in Haiti, St. Lucia, Dominica and a couple other Caribbean islands.

Baptiste Paul's debut perfectly captures the exuberance and freedom that children feel when playing a soccer (futbol) game outdoors with their friends. And the lovely illustrations capture the excitement of childhood. A great read!

The Field is a wonderful addition to our library. The story is simple enough for my young toddler, and I enjoy reading the Creole to her. The pictures are lovely and dynamic. Although she's too young for soccer just yet, I've bought several copies for all the young soccer fans in my life!

I've been creating books for kids in Ethiopia, and having such a fun, well-illustrated book that shows the way soccer is played around the world is HUGE!
