What's Wrong with Children's Rights

From Publishers Weekly

"As deeply as I've always thought of myself as a children's advocate, much of what I read and hear being advocated in furtherance of children's rights seems to me misguided," writes Guggenheim (The Rights of Families, The Rights of Young People). In this well-argued treatise, the veteran lawyer and children's rights activist takes a stand against children's rights policies that undermine parental authority. Why, he asks, should judges and lawyers be allowed to determine what's best for a child and not the child's parents? After a short introduction to the history of children's rights, he examines how the movement has impacted married parents, unwed fathers, third-party parents, divorced parents, foster parents, adolescents and society as a whole. Guggenheim's main contention is that the best way to secure a child's well-being is not through "children's rights," a term, he argues, that is too often invoked by disputing adults in order to give one party the upper hand-sometimes with disastrous results. Guggenheim does an admirable job outlining the history of children's rights legislation and highlighting the detrimental impact it can have on families, but he offers only vague alternatives. Indeed, he contends that children's well-being should be seen as an integral part of a successful society and writes that "clear rules, quickly enforced, would do far more to protect children's rights than protracted litigation ever could." But what are these rules and who should enforce them? Guggenheim never explains. Nevertheless, his thorough analysis of the topic and his ability to always consider his subject in the larger context of American society makes this book relevant not just for policymakers and academics but for anyone interested in the country's social dilemmas. Professor Guggenheim's book is an insightful and ambitious project that discusses the ways in which adults and various interest groups use the mantle of "children's rights" to forward their own agendas--even when those agendas are in fact contrary or unrelated to the welfare of children. He provides a sharp and detailed look into the particular legal movement associated with children's rights that has arisen over the past forty years, and the contradictory impact that movement has had on various parts of family law, from divorce to removal of children by the state. At the same time he grounds this analysis in the broader historical context of both legal doctrines and social movements on behalf of children.His conclusions are fascinating and have important implications for anyone concerned with the welfare of children--be they attorneys, policy makers, social workers or interested citizens. Not all readers may ultimately agree with Guggenheim, but all will benefit from this thought-provoking work.If our policies in the name of children in fact cause dramatic and irreparable harm to them, then why are those policies in place? Whom do they serve? Those who are preoccupied by the empty slogan of "children's rights" but refuse to engage with the substantive impact that "children's rights" policies have do all of us a disservice. (Speaking of which, the dissonance between the comments of some readers on this website and the content of this book is so great that I wonder whether they did more than read the jacket cover.)

The two 1-star reviews below (or above) could not possibly have read the entire book, because much of what they advocate, Guggenheim advocates. This is a thought-provoking, insightful book written by a liberal ACLU lawyer who has seen the utter destruction caused by government intervention into the lives of families. He takes a libertarian position of granting parents as many rights as possible in order to keep children in their homes. He makes this argument not based on his disregard for the welfare of children (his whole career has been dedicated to that) but out of respect to the parents of children. (Who is the "state" to tell me how to raise my child, anyway?) He writes that we have to be OK with parents who are "minimally fit" simply because the overwhelming evidence is that when children are taken out of their "minimally fit" homes, their lives get worse. This book is more a critique of government intervention and the failures of the foster system than anything else. It might be wrong to allow children to suffer under bad parents, but that is not an argument for state intervention. He does think there is a place for foster homes, as some parents are not even minimally fit, but according to a myriad of studied 40-70% of children placed there do not need to have their lives disrupted.Last, he notes that the rhetoric over children's rights has been exploited for political gain by both the left. Court cases have dragged on too long, cost too much money, and actually been detrimental to children. In short, he argues that there is no such thing as children's rights. For example, does a child have a "right" to a relationship with her parent? No. A child cannot sue and make an adult be a part of her life. The "rights" children receive are the "rights" judges, who don't know them, tell them they have. Framing the debate about "children's rights" is just another way to win political points with a voting base.

Guggenheim delivers an important shot in the arm to anybody who verges on self-satisfaction about the state's intervention in the family. Throughout this important book, he illustrates ways that racial and economic inequities become reinforced and furthered by the current US foster care system. Identifying that this is often done in the name of "saving children" is one of the most important teachings to any critical thinker involved in the children's rights movement. I am grateful to this important contribution to the field and wish more people would read, engage with, and debate the propositions set forth in this book.

This book is premised on an ancient ideology which insists that parents are like gods to their children and that children are basically property. The guy starts with his premise and then goes on to manipulate statistics and ignore the obvious to promote his beliefs. In many cases in the United States when it comes to cruelty dogs have more rights than kids. Children are defenseless and to say that parents know and love their kids because they are biologically theirs is an incredibly ignorant statement.Their is ample evidence that many parents are incapable of caring for a child. Brutalized children often grow up to be destructive adults. What our society needs is a book on how to deal with this problem realistically, which we have not been doing. In the original 13 colonies killing your child for various reasons including rebellion was legal, is that what we want?

Pros: Short (~180 pages) in full color. Easy to follow, big font, SMALL coding samples. You won't die trying to get through this book. Easy to make notes, not to lose interest, and to cover basic concepts one at a time so you can go back to youtube or a larger book to see each concept more in-depth. Keeps you organized. I'd say this book is geared towards children with all the color, but it greatly helped me (I'm 24).Cons: Covers the basics (great for beginners!) thus good only if you're a super beginner to programming in general. Also doesn't cover the basics in depth- just code, straight to the point. What it is and how to use it, no theory behind it. Some examples redundant or useless, and some things (ie the use of this->) isn't encouraged in the c++ community the way its illustrated. But again, not a big deal, and much of it is personal preference.Suggestion: If you're new to programming and are trying to pick up these skills, get this book. Get CodeBlocks or NetBeans or a similar platform downloaded, and get a git account (free) to upload your code online to GitHub. Git will keep you motivated to continue (you can track your status, etc). Good luck!

I started years ago with Mike McGrath's "C Programming in Easy Steps" I picked up in London before I found them in the USA.As a hardware designer more and more of my designs have embedded processors. Today most processors are supplied with reference designs, eval boards, and sample code including C++ code that runs under a OS on a host.What I needed was a top level guide to understand the sample code sufficiently to tailor it to my specific application and a reference to decipher the error messages as a result of my tailoring. McGarth's book was perfect. I have long since graduated to a book shelf of "heavy" C reference books which I use. But McGarth's book is within close reach for the occasion when I haven't used a function for a while and need a quick peek to remember the correct syntax.C++ Programming in Easy Steps has proven to be as useful as the C version as I tackle C++ sample code for a host OS application. The book’s format is very clean and well organized. Each section has at least one complete example and avoids generalized snippets that only a CS major would appreciate. He includes useful Tips and “Beware” to avoid common pit-falls many people fall into when first writing code. His books are not full of what is supposed to be humor as some are. They are very clear and to the point.If you are a student, hobbyist, old Fortran coder, or a hardware designer and need to bang out some rudimentary C++ code for a project this book is highly recommended.

I love this author, I've read a few of his other books, he gets right to the point and manages to teach all the basics and a little more. I wish he wrote more books though (maybe on Unity, please please!) =/I've read dozens of programming books over the years and his C++ and now this C# ones are two of my favorites.

Back in 1999 I took a class and C programming and found the process of programming very frustrating and confusing that I became a server engineer. Flash forward to today and I am forced to write a handful of apps for my Unix/Linux team which would save us time on mundane tasks. I picked up this book knowing that C was a major challenge for me in the past and I am very glad I did. This book clearly explains several concepts with which I could not grasp when I was younger and helpful in learning the C language. If you are interested in learning C as novice or if you are frustrated with other C books by all means get this book. There are a few errors but most of them are with function most beginners will not deal with such as memory manipulation.

I bought this book while trying to digest my textbook for class ("C++ Primer Plus" Fifth Edition by Stephen Prata), which is the highest rated textbook on the subject as of January 2012.Already versed in C and C#, I thought I'd take this class to finish my understanding of the C family.Not it is the most technical and diverse of them all, but also the most bulky and the most confusing.My textbook had a lot of words, like most textbooks, and not enough examples. I prefer to learn by being shown and being able to copy the programs and pick each bit apart. Needless to say without those types of examples aplenty, I was growing more and more confused and more and more behind in class.I pawed for a quick fix to my misunderstandings and low and behold, I find this quick guide.This book is amazing. The wording is easy, fast, and to the point. You can devour a chapter in less then ten minutes and have PLENTY of time to fool around with what you've learned after! This book told me in two pages how to write to and from a file where seven pages in my smaller-texted, bulky, wordy but yet five-stared textbook could not.BUY THIS BOOK! In a weekend you can easily become capable of comprehending and writing C++ programming and then just build on it while in class. If you are falling behind, you WILL catch up with this book to reference; Simple. Read it BEFORE getting into class and you'll be a mad-l33t coder.(McGrath = bestCodingAuthorEver)? cout << "Of course!": cout << "LIES!";

Overall good into to C#, I used this book to freshen what I already knew. A concept the author did miss was in regards to the difference between class variables and instance variables. An example showing that would have made this book 5 stars.

The book is called "Easy Steps" but I find that it teaches more than "Easy Steps". The book briefly outlines every main components of C++ programming language, I like the arrangement of the book content in which the description of C++ content is printed on the left and the code is printed on the right. Very easy to follow, but if a beginner without any programming knowledge may feel difficult to read because when the more the reader read, the deeper the content of c++ is. After all, the book is organised as a very concise way in C++ programming book.

Once again, SE Rose did NOT disappoint!! I loved everything about this hilarious story. Reagan and Zach meet at a destination wedding and the last thing they expected to find was each other. Their very first meeting is hysterical. I also adored Grant and Harrison who both made it even funnier.Can’t wait to see what’s next from this author!

Holy Wedding Disaster! The Decoy is exactly what was promised. A story full of scandal and disaster. This book does have romance, but it also has mystery. Take a gander inside and see if you can figure out what is going on.What happens when your best friend asks you do them a solid and play the decoy girlfriend at a family wedding? Well if you are a good best friend, you say to heck with it and jump on the plane. What they don’t expect is the secrets and scandal that will follow. Or the fact that they might just meet someone who will make their heart race and palms sweat. Welcome to Mexico!Reagan is such a great character. It is obvious that she is a very caring and empathetic person. Even more, she is also a regular person even thought looking at her on paper you would expect the opposite. I loved how funny and strong she is. Then you have Zach. He is smart, attractive, and not at all comfortable with his place in this group. One thing that you can say about him, though, he is a very loyal person. That is the best thing about him.Oh my heat. There is just something about a book when the plot starts with a fake anything. You just know the chemistry is going to be off the charts. Add in two very attractive characters with a common goal and well I would be surprised if the sheets weren’t on fire. I really enjoyed the heat aspect.The writing style in this book is good. The story has a steady pace. The story is told from a dual point of view. The characters are dynamic and make you love them. I really loved the minor characters. There is one character in particular that I hope gets their own book. He deserves it.Overall, I loved this story. All the secrets, scandal, and drama was perfect for me. I really liked the detective aspect of the book that made me want to find out what was going on more than the characters. I would recommend this book to others for sure.Ratings:Plot: 5/5Characters: 5/5Heat: 5/5Writing Style: 5/5Overall: 5/5

A•R•C ~ I was given The Decoy by S.E. Rose as an Advanced Readers Copy (A•R•C) from Give Me Book Promotions. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.S.E. Rose has written an amazing romantic comedy with The Decoy. Reagan and Zach are perfect and so are Grant & Harrison. The four characters make the entire book so funny I was crying I was laughing so hard.Reagan is Grant’s “Decoy” since Grant’s family would cut his inheritance if they found out he was gay, just like they did his sister Beth when she married an African-American Doctor, all thanks to Eunice or Grandma Satan as Reagan calls her. A horrible old woman who is just awful to everyone around her, she want’s complete control over her family in everything and interracial marriage and same sex relationships are things she will not tolerate she would kick you out of your rightful inheritance, one-word, WITCH with a capital B-I-T-C-H!The story was amazing and so funny again I laughed out loud many times during my reading of this book, still have a smile on my face and it’s been hours since I finished the book.Thank you for the pick-me up with your literary humor!

This book is fabulous. The story is fresh, lively and full of laughter, hotness and drama. I simply couldn’t put it down. The writing is wonderful and dragged me right into the middle of their lives. I think I’m in love with all of these men, their characters just jump out of the pages.I love the main characters, Grant, Zack, Reagan and Harrison. I really liked the friendship between Reagan and Grant, these two will do anything for each other. Reagan is Grant’s ‘decoy ‘ as in she’s pretending to be in a relationship with him. I also thought the friendship between the four men; including the groom, Lee, who were all Frat brothers in college, was fantastic.There are lots of characters in this book and I was a bit overwhelmed to start with, I soon got to grips with the most important ones though. There is a helpful list of characters and their relationships in the back of the book.This is my first book by S E Rose and I’m a new fan, I hope we get the stories of all of the main players in the future, I’m definitely invested in their lives.
