Striking Back: The 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre and Israel's Deadly Response

From Publishers Weekly

Told in remarkable detail, author Klein (Time's Jerusalem correspondent) chronicles the tragic Israeli hostage massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics and the secret assassination campaign that followed. The execution of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by members of Black September is presented as the result of the colossal ineptitude of West German and Bavarian officials. From this horrific event, the author departs on a fascinating examination of the Israeli response-a shadow war in which "Mossad combatants...were charged with carrying out the assassination orders, which had been passed down from Golda Meir to each successive prime minister." The Mossad quickly identified assassination targets for their involvement in the Munich Massacre; as the program evolved, however, the Mossad's goals expanded, creating a systematic counter-terror campaign based on prevention and deterrence. On the heels of Operation Spring of Youth, in which Israeli commandos assassinated three high-level PLO and Fatah officials in Beirut, "the myth of Israel's military capacity and the long reach of the Mossad was hitting its peak," putting terrorists on the defensive. Klein's account is well researched and highly valuable, and while the episodic structure he employs becomes repetitive, it is nevertheless a necessary read for anyone interested in Israeli history and politics as well as the birth of modern counter-terrorism. As an Israeli citizen and a member of the IDF we know from what point of view Klien is presenting Munich and subsequent events. Yet, he still presents many of Israel’s adversaries as human and as dedicated to their cause as the Mossad. Klien provides sufficient detail while keeping the reader engrossed. He also, questions each individual assassination, but leaves plenty of room for the reader to come to his own conclusions. Clearly, many of the assassinations carried out by Mossad were on relatively easy targets. People who were chosen, not because of the gravity of their crimes, or potential danger, so much as they were not well hidden. It is clear that some of the targets Mossad took out may have potentially saved lives while others may have only served as revenge. It is difficult to prove with certainty. One thing that was clear, and surprising, was the fantastic ineptitude of the Germans. Everything was botched, from security that may have prevented the attack in the first place to the ambush of the Black September terrorists at the airfield that the West Germans should have been able to carry out successfully, since it was they, not the terrorists, were able to choose the time and place of the action. The level of cowardice of the Germans was also hard to believe. When given an excuse – a hijacked plane – to free the three terrorists they did capture, the West German government did not hesitate. In fact most Western European governments are guilty of utterly shameful behavior. Of the 204 Arab terrorists captured in Europe during the 70’s and 80’s only 3 remained in jail. All others were released. So I have little sympathy for Europeans and the fact that their countries were a battle ground between Mossad their Arab adversaries.

I have read many books on this subject, including Vengeance, the book on which Spielberg based his sappy, overly moralized movie "Munich," and One Day In September, on which an award-winning documentary was based. Of the three I rate Klein's book as the best. There are three reasons for this: 1) Klein's is the most recent, which allows him a broader historical perspective from which to judge Israel's campaign, its results, and its repercussions, 2) Klein was granted access to Israeli government documents which had not been previously available, and 3) he is not an apologist for either side, finding fault with both the Palestinian terrorists and, several times, with Israel's actions. It is not an exhaustive study on the topic (Vengeance & September are each longer), but it covers both major and minor events in the campaign pretty thoroughly, if succinctly. Klein was granted more interviews with current and former officials from the Mossad, Israel's secret intelligence service, than any author before him. That first hand knowledge, combined with a punchy writing style and his unprecedented access to relevant government documents, makes this a compelling and very educational read.

we all watched it ... we were all horrified by the Munich games massacre. we saw it all unfold and could see the flaws in the German/Bavarian governments' mishandling of the event. i must insert here however, that, the event did produce, a later event in Germany by spurring that government to establish an excellent hostage crisis response unit and other countries established similar units based on the German model. while many governments may have thought about establishing specialty response units that particular type of police response was at the very least in its infancy. no one had SWAT teams as such established, hostage responses were not standardized in any jurisdiction.this book does not dwell on the Munich event except to present the event succinctly but it does present both sides of the resulting conflict. if you read any book about this tragedy and how it radically changed police response to hostage situations, high profile or not, this is the one to read as you will learn the underlying tensions and reasons for the entire situation.while watching this tragedy unfold, we all knew that the outcome was not going to be the happy ending that a book of fiction would serve up, we knew this was too serious and too intense to end well and clearly saw the flaws in the response to the crisis. we remarked at the time ... why are the television news crews showing this in real time? don't they understand that while it was a huge news event, they were providing exactly the information needed by the perpetrators and it was easy to see that nothing the police were going to try was going to be kept secret from the men who committed this heinousness. so ... we now have trained hostage negotiators, and rapid highly trained police response teams specifically trained for these situations. how long we will have them given congressional constipation regarding all federal funding is one of the questions we can only hope is well thought out and well handled. this can and has happened elsewhere, even here in the USA, albeit not on such a grand stage, it is happening in other countries on a regular basis (ie, terroristic kidnappings in certain southern border towns). unfortunately, not all nations learned a lesson from this event and we can only hope that the US government insists on retaining these specialized police units as well as other rapid response teams specialized for other crimes.all in all, the book is quite balanced and reads much like a novel which should make it an easy if unpleasant read for some, but it is an important book for anyone interested in not only the world horror of such an event, but also in various nations' response within their own policing or military agencies.

I was always under the impression that Israel and the Mossad killed all the perpetrators of the Munich Olympics massacre- they didn't; I was suprised to read about how perps were picked for assasination and the levels of verification, oversight and study that went into eliminating every terririst on the list. I have more respect for Israel after reading this book as their assination efforts put a huge dent into terrorists and terrorism. This was an intresting and elightening read. For example, I never knew how bad the West German govertment and Bavarian officials blew the prisoner exchange and the fact that west Germany and Bavaria were so porrly prepared for terrorists and terrorism.

On the eve of the Pluto flyby of the New Horizons spacecraft I could not help but think of how much has changed for the planet since the probe’s launch over nine years ago in January of 2006. Indeed nothing actually changed for Pluto itself, but for the way we define and classify him (her?) and the presumed hundreds of other celestial bodies like it. See, when New Horizons launched, Pluto was still classified as a planet. In August of that same year the International Astronomical Union (IAU) declared Pluto to be a dwarf planet. This was a big letdown to the ninth planet lovers everywhere. As the only planet discovered by an American astronomer, Pluto had become an American icon. Even Mickey Mouse’s dog bears the name. And many Americans, as well as some other folks around our planet, were not comfortable with the designation change. One man stood to receive much of the heat for re characterization of the icy Pluto. That man was Neil deGrasse Tyson, and in 2009 he described from his own point of view the path out of planet-hood that Pluto took in his book, The Pluto Files.Earlier this year Dr. Tyson was going to be doing a lecture here in St. Louis. In anticipation of my attendance, I decided to to pick the book up.Long before we knew of nine planets in our solar system, we had already settled on eight. In fact, Tyson starts out by pointing to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago was out-of-date the day it opened its doors. Opening only two months after the discovery of Pluto by Clyde W. Tombaugh in February of 1930, Adler had already been designed to showcase eight planets. One can still go there today and see the plaques depicting the eight planets which after 76 years of being out-of-date are finally right with the times.I think that Tyson was pointing this out to exemplify the cost of changing our view of the universe and our solar system in particular. In reclassifying Pluto, textbooks need to be revised, museums need to be reorganized, and entire generations of people will go on without accepting it because either they do not care enough, they are unwilling to see the nuance as to why, or perhaps because of the culture surrounding our old understanding.Mickey’s dog was far from the only part of this culture. Upon the discovery of Pluto, this new planet was an budding rock star. In 1932 a laxative known as Pluto Water hit the market. In 1941 a new element who needed a name became known as Plutonium. And of course how can anyone raised in the 80s and 90s forget that My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas? If Pluto is no longer a planet, many Plutophiles have pointed out, we have to come up with a new mnemonic. Indeed the culture of Pluto was strong and so demotion was destined to bring about controversy.Throughout describing the history and science surrounding Pluto, Tyson helps to distinguish it from what we now define as a planet. For example, Pluto is mostly made of ice. Pluto’s moon, Charon, is so large that center of motion is between Pluto and Charon. Every other planet in the solar system has moons whose center of motion lies within the boundaries of the planet. Pluto is so small that it is less than five percent the size of mercury. Pluto also exists in the Kuiper belt along with many smaller ice balls as well as some similarly sized icy objects. Should we start calling the larger of those planets as well? For a little while some people did.Of course Tyson was not personally or otherwise responsible for Pluto’s fall from grace. The planet had long been on the radar in a large part due to the discovery of Kuiper belt objects that were increasingly closer to Pluto’s size. What put Tyson in the crosshairs of the Plutophiles was mostly exposure due to his involvement of the design of the New York Hayden Planetarium’s Rose Center for Earth and Space. Given the climate of disagreement of how to classify Pluto among relevant scientists at the time and the permanence of the Rose Center which was to be built and opened in 2000, some presentational creativity was going to be required. Instead of an “enumeration of orbs to be memorized” (Tyson, 2009), they presented the solar system as families of objects with similar characteristics. You have the Sun, the rocky terrestrial planets, the asteroid belt, the gas giants, and the Kuiper belt. Pluto lives in the Kuiper belt.No one really noticed that Pluto was missing from the presentations of the Rose Center until a New York Times article came out almost a year after its opening. The article was titled, “Pluto’s Not A Planet? Only In New York”. This is when the firestorm started for Tyson. In the book several humorous letters are shared from various elementary classrooms begging Dr. Tyson to make Pluto a planet again. This was probably my favorite part of the book. I never cease to be amused by the visceral reaction to those who resist a change that is so obviously needed.Part of the problem for the IAU was that there hadn’t really been a formal definition of the term planet. Therefore, the task ahead was to formulate that definition which then included them deciding what to do if or when certain celestial bodies did not make the cut. In any event there were no longer going to be nine planets in our solar system. If Pluto made the cut, Pluto’s moon, another Kuiper belt object named Eris, and an asteroid belt object named Ceres would also have become planets. As it turned out. All four of those objects became part of a new class called dwarf planets. For Tyson, the emails came at a rate of hundreds per day. Articles were written blasting the decision. Even many astronomers were burned by the development. But no amount of passion from the Plutophiles could reverse it. Pluto was now a dwarf planet. When I saw Dr. Tyson’s lecture a couple of months ago, he could not have put his attitude toward it better. In three words he said, “Get over it.”The Pluto Files is a fascinating read. I hope this week as you are enjoying the new data coming from our favorite little dwarf planet, you might give this book a look.

This book, the Pluto Files, is an entertaining and informative introduction to the planet Pluto and its fate as a planet. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is not only a famous Astrophysicist but a great populariser of science, and he is carrying on Carl Sagan’s work impressively. I love Dr. Tyson’s Cosmos series and I really hope to see a lot more of it.As we all know Pluto is no longer considered a planet and Neil DeGrasse Tyson might have helped Pluto’s demise as a planet with the construction of the Hayden Sphere at the Hayden Planetarium. Until recently there was no formal definition of what a planet is and that presented a problem for the involved scientists and for Pluto. The book tells you about how Pluto was conflated with Planet X, how it shrunk in size as more became known about Pluto, how it’s orbit is unusually eccentric, and that it has not sufficiently cleared its orbit of debris, and that it could be considered to be just the largest known Kuiper belt object, and that Pluto was not named after Mickey Mouse’s dog (but rather the other way around). Neil DeGrasse Tyson is of the opinion that Pluto should not be called a planet, but his view is nuanced and based on science, and he is not taking himself too seriously. He is fair, and he tells us about the problem with humor and with respect for all viewpoints. He gives us an overview of the various discussions and opinions that scientists had on the topic, including that of Alan Stern, the man behind the New Horizons project, and a graduate from the school my son just graduated from.Unlike Dr. Tyson, I am not an expert on the topic, but even after reading this book, I find myself not entirely convinced. What is a Planet is about how to label something. In addition to scientific considerations it is also culture, and therefore the view of the public matters. The alternative definition of a planet as a body circling the sun that is in hydrostatic equilibrium (big enough to squeeze itself into a ball) is also quite intuitive. I don’t think it is bad if Ceres comes back as planet, or if there are dozens of other Kuiper belt objects that will be called planets. That’s just exciting. Then you could actually impress someone by knowing all the planets. One thing that was not discussed in the book was how this is related to exo-planets. What shall we do with large exo-planets that have not cleared their orbit of debris? That’s another reason I think we might not have heard the last of this yet.In any case, the book has lots of nice pictures, comical anecdotes, lots of interesting information and discussions, and it is a concise and entertaining read. Therefore I recommend this book.
