Decision making permeates our everyday life. It ranges from the personal to the industrial and commercial where the process becomes costly and critical. Traditionally businesses resorted to intuition and the advice of experts to make a major decision. Lately, however, more and more decision making is relying on data analysis and the use of computer. In this groundbreaking new book, “Super Crunchers”, the author, Ian Ayre, believes that the days of making decisions by relying on intuitions are gone. Today’s best and brightest organizations are analyzing massive databases at lightening speed and gaining greater insights into our human behavior. They are the super crunchers. Companies like Google and Amazon have amassed huge data about our behavior. They know our tastes better than we do, they understand our children’s needs, they know all about the shoes and clothes we buy and wear. They even know how much we’ll pay for our flights and whether the fares will go up or down. They are a new breed of decision makers who are now calling the shots. But how do these companies arrive at such massive information. Obviously, they need a huge amount of data to get comprehensive conclusions, and the data should be as randomized as possible to avoid bias. Interestingly, such data is now available through specialized companies whose business is to collect figures from computer charts, store receipts, company reports and the like, and sell them to researchers. They have data on the size of our shoes, the foods we eat, the medicines we buy, the games we play and even the colors we favor. Once the data is collected, researchers use regression and statistical analysis to evaluate the effect of different variables on a commodity or a behavioral trend, e.g. does music in factories increase productivity? Would a salary raise improve employee loyalty…..? And so on.Putting This new data-analysis approach to many fields has made remarkable improvements. Consider the effect on the medical field. The rise of data-based decision making has reversed conventional wisdom. For example it showed that beta blockers can actually help cardiac patients and that estrogen therapy does not help aging women. Now there is a diagnostic program called “Isabel” which allows physicians to enter a patient’s symptoms into a computer and receive the most likely diagnosis. It will also tell the doctor the possible drug that caused the symptoms. Soon it will even specify the most likely therapy. No wonder many doctors are getting concerned about the possible loss of their control over diagnoses once considered a most important factor in their profession. How are we then to look at this groundbreaking approach to decision making? One cannot dispute its speed and efficiency. It is simply remarkable! Business has put it to beneficial use, but mostly to maximize its profits from the unaware consumers. Medicine stands to gain from it technically while also helping the patient financially and health-wise. But buyer be ware! There are no guarantees and consumers have to view it critically on a case-by-case basis in order to evaluate its risks and benefits.F.R. QUBEINNov. 2017

Great book on the importance of data-driven decision making. While I have always been someone that has let the data do the talking, I haven't found an easy way to explain why. Super Crunchers is that easy way! Below I have summarized some of the important points of the book....Super Crunching is crucially about the impact of statistical analysis on real-world decisions. Two core techniques for Super Crunching are the regression and randomization.1. Regression will make your predictions more accurate (Historical approach):It all starts with the use of regressions, and although this method is a basic statistical test of causal relationship it's still a very powerful tool that I need to re-introduce in my analytical life.Regressions make predictions and tell you how precise the prediction is. It tries to hone in on the causal impact of a variable on a dependent. It can tell us the weights to place upon various factors and simultaneously tell us how precisely it was able to estimate these weights.2. Randomization and large sample sizes (Present/Real-Time approach):Reliance on historical data increases the difficulty in discerning causation. Large randomized tests work because the distribution amongst the sample are increasingly identical. Think A/B testing on steroids that allows you to quickly test different combinations! Boils down to the averages of the "treated and untreated" groups.Government has embraced randomization as the best way to test what works. Statistical profiling led to smarter targeting of government supportWith finite amounts of data, we can only estimate a finite number of causal effects3. Neural networkUnlike the regression approach, which estimates the weights to apply to a single equation, the neural approach uses a system of equations represented by a series of interconnected switches.Computers use historical data to train the equation switches to come up with optimal weights. But while the neural technique can yield powerful predictions, it does a poorer job of telling you why it is working or how much confidence it has in its prediction.Super Crunching requires analysis of the results of repeated decisions. If you can't measure what you're trying to maximize, you're not going to be able to rely on data-driven decisions. We humans just overestimate our ability to make good decisions and we're skeptical that a formula that necessarily ignores innumerable pieces of information could do a better job than we could.

#1,621 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was drawn to this novel because I love all things British and especially Royal. I thought the idea behind the book was good and the author stuck with historical events well. But the author needs an editor with a knowledge of all things Royal. She constantly makes errors in the titles and means of address. For example, she writes that the Duke and Duchess of York were addressed as "Your Grace" when in fact they were addressed as "Your Royal Highness". "Your Grace" is the proper address for non-Royal dukes and duchesses. She frequently referred to Princess Mary as Lady Mary , which she never was. Once the Yorks became the Prince and Princess of Wales, she erred again in referring to them as "Their Highnesses" instead of the "Their Royal Highnesses. ". There are other errors such as Prince John being 9 months old at the start of a chapter and regressing to 6 months old by the end. Again sloppy editing. The book itself was sweet and interesting but was diminished by obvious errors which should have been caught when writing about the British Royal Family. I was very surprised to learn that this was not the author's first book and that she has written other historical novels and Royal ones at that. That being said, lapses of obvious Royal protocol and titles make it all the more disappointing.I suggest she make revisions and publish a second edition.

I realize many others enjoyed and appreciated this book, so I realize I may be in the minority here, but I found it deadly dull. As someone who appreciates great examples of both nonfiction and historical fiction, and as a rabid appreciator of anything Edwardian, I expected and wanted to like this book, but was so bored I was quickly ready to move on to something else. The goody two shoes-ish nature of Charlotte was tedious, and I found the writing and situations formulaic. Just not for me, even among characters I know and appreciate from history. So I have to disagree that all Anglophiles will love this ...this one, for one, didn't!

And that is exactly what happened here. The author had a good enough true story in that of Charlotte Bill as head nanny to the future kings of England and their siblings. But, she introduced a fictional character and made him too instrumental to the real events that actually took place. Not to mention, the author made suppositions about Charlotte Bill's heart and desires. I found the fictionalized interweaving of this fictionalized character in with real events too distracting.

"The Royal Nanny" was a bit of a surprise to me, in that I found it so enjoyable. As I read, I gained a clearer understanding of the inter-relatedness of the royal families of Europe. I am now reading a novel about Tatiana, the second oldest of Czar Nicholas's daughters, and the historical facts in the current novel align precisely with those presented in "The Royal Nanny." This, to me, is one of the best reasons for reading--you get to refresh your knowledge of history in a most pleasant way!

The subject matter was interesting, but the narrative is so boring! The underlying love story was sad, the way in which royals interacted was sad, the treatment of children was sad. The writing was pedantic at best. Even as a very low cost kindle book, i cannot recommend this.

An intriguing perspective on how the young Royals are raised. Of course, the distant parenting was a product of the era and not because the family was a royal one. It is a historically accurate novel but the most interesting portions of the book is the development of each of the children in the family and how their upbringing affected them their entire lives. You are just happy that there was one person in their lives (their nanny) who could show her affection for them.

A fictionalized story of Prince Johnnie, who was largely kept secret by the Royal Family because of his epilepsy. This novel does a good job of showing the ambivalence of feeling had for "a cripple," as Johnnie was seen. An engaging read, if you are a fan of the current Royal Family, you will enjoy this book as a precursor to the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

This novel is the “memoir” of the royal nanny to the future Kings of England. It is well written, engaging, and allows you to see the English royals from a servant’s perspective, though she really becomes almost family to some of the family. I didn’t know about the youngest epileptic son who plays a prominent roll in this book. If you love English history, this novel about the raising of Queen Elizabeth’s uncles, father and aunt is well worth reading.

The Sound of Silence: The Selected Teachings of Ajahn Sumedho, by Ajahn Sumedho

About the Author

For nearly fifty years Ajahn Sumedho has embodied the Buddha's way. As a young man he completed an M.A. at the University of California at Berkeley, was a medic in the Navy, and taught in the Peace Corps in Borneo. For twelve years, beginning in 1966, he studied closely with the renowned meditation master Ajahn Chah, who appointed him to be the first Western abbot of a Thai monastery. Now based in England, he is the spiritual head of a global community of monks and nuns.Ajahn Amaro is abbot of the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in southeast England and author of numerous books and articles on Buddhist themes across traditions. Born in England in 1956, Ven. Amaro received his BSc. in Psychology and Physiology from the University of London. He studied Buddhism in Thailand in the Forest Tradition and was ordained as a bhikkhu by Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Nanachat in 1979. He returned to England and joined Ajahn Sumedho at the newly established Chithurst Monastery. He resided for many years at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England, and in 1996 he established Abhayagiri Monastery in Redwood Valley, California. He lived there until 2010, when he was called back to Amaravati to assume the duties of abbot.

All I can offer is that Anjan Sumedho has been my companion and guide on The Path for the past decade. Like any good teacher, he has given me encouragement to "test out" his advice, much as the Buddha did for his followers. For an ex-Catholic, this was obviously liberating. As an American, he made his way through the Thai forest tradition, painfully at times, and found his path. His "talks" avoid the unneeded scholarship as he provide direct and practical guidance to those on their own meditation retreat. He is not trying the "blend" the Wisdom of the East with the West into some New Age synthesis but actually embodies that in his own journey. After reading this book, a page and sometimes a paragraph at a time before my meditation over several years, I moved on to his second book, Don't Take Your Life Personally. In both cases, I found his guidance invaluable in my journey into The Sound of Silence. Not an easy path for an American . . .

This collection of talks that were given by Ajahn Sumedho provide a unique perspective on the dhamma. He spoke extensively about the human aspect of the path, and how to live the dhamma, rather than being caught up Buddhism as a system to follow, with a goal to reach. He was incredibly open in the talks, about his own experiences, difficulties, and things that everyone faces on the path.I especially enjoyed his extensive coverage of how our language and cultural conditioning affects our understanding of the teachings. For example, Westerners who have an aversion to some of the ritual and devotional aspects of Theravada as practiced in Asia..instead of passing judgement, we should investigate why we have an aversion to that, and what is "me", the ego that has this opinion, and that is experiencing aversion, and how does that affect us in other areas of life? Also, what are the meanings of some of the words that are translated from Pali to English, and how do we understand them in English versus the context that they have in Pali and in the culture of those times...we come at them from the lens of our own language and culture, and our interpretations may be skewed versus what the Buddha was trying to teach.I would give this publication 10 stars if I could. It is great that they have transcribed and printed these talks.

Profoundly clear and simple teachings on the connection between the basic tenets of Buddhism and personal practice. These chapters/lectures really stick with me long after reading them. I have never met or seen Ajahn Sumedho, but there is a presence that comes through the printed words of this book. Not all transcribed teachings have this kind of impact for me at all. When I read these it is as if I experience myself being guided into stillness and insight. It is a great book for reading just a chapter/lecture at a time, and giving it plenty of space and time to sink in and work its magic. I found myself reading some chapters a few times before moving on to the next; and I find some of his pithy observations and phrases turning over and over in my mind long after I put the book down. Great for dipping into for a little while in the morning before I sit down to meditate. Although my own path has been primarily through the Tibetan Kagyu tradition, these teachings are so fundamental and clear that I think they would be complementary for anyone with an interest in practicing Buddhist meditation. You just have to get on the cushion! But this book might help you get there.

The bulk of this book comes from "Intuitive Awareness", a free publication book published by Amaravati Publications (Amaravati being the monastery where Ajahn Sumedho lives). This Wisdom publication makes Ajahn Sumedho's teaching in "Intuitive Awareness" available to a wider audience than just those who visit Amaravati or the other monasteries associated with Ajahn Sumedho. The clarity, wisdom, humor and (above all) practicality of Ajahn Sumedho's teaching usually come as a surprise to those not familiar with him. This is not a book of esoteric or metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. It is, instead, the deep insight and wisdom of a Buddhist monk who has dedicated his life to discovering the immediacy of Ultimate Truth and who is sharing with us his knowledge and wisdom as he encourages us along the Path. There are many, many spiritual books offering helpful (and not-so-helpful) guidance. Very, very few offer the practical, non-proselytizing guidance and wisdom found in "The Sound Of Silence."

A practical guide to gain awareness in any situation so that the Buddah's insights for alliviating suffering can be realized. There will always be pain in life but there's a way to avoid suffering that is always available to all of us without having to get involved in esoteric or religious teachings. Easy to read, can be opened to any page for a quick insight to help you out of further trouble.

I have been fortunate enough to have met and spent time with Ajahn Sumedho. This collection of some of his teachings is a gem. He offers insight, not through complex Buddhist theology or intricate practice, but using everyday experiences as a way to 'see' the mischief of the ego that seeks distraction and chaos. With a steady, often humorous, style of 'talk' he gently guides us toward an understanding of the silence that we can achieve with application rather than slavery. If you cannot meet him, this book will give you a real human feel for the style and wisdom of his Dhamma talks.

I think I loved " don't take your life so seriously" more but they are both great. I've studied this subject endlessly and Ajahn Sumedho is one of the best on the subject. Everything simplified!

Alanna Sumedho has a casual, reflective approach to the teachings that is practical and applicable to my own evolution. That makes this work a real gemstone to my practice and growth.
