The authors father was a CIA agent who handled the Soviet spy TOP HAT - after the death of her parents they found historical information in boxes in the attic, so she decided to wrote about her fathers career. It is not a memoir, it is not well referenced or sourced - there are no footnotes, it is superficial, and poorly written. The tone goes from giddy teenager moving to a foreign country to "serious conversations between spies." It is not believable, poorly organized, and the topics have been covered so much better by other authors.

How timely and relevant to today's geopolitical issues! This is an untold tale of the (first) Cold War in a voice that delves into not just the captivating intrigue of a Russian and American spy, who's collaboration helped shaped the outcome of the Cold War, but also the families and private lives of these unsung heroes from both sides of the Iron Curtain. This book not only reveals daring intrigue and clandestine spy craft, it addresses the human toll and sacrifices of the players. Beautifully written and deeply researched, this compelling story was written by the daughter of the American spymaster who gained added insight to the Russian side of the story through the insights and memories of the Russian spy's son. Whether you're a Cold War or spy junkie or you love a heartfelt and inspiring true story of selfless heroes and their personal sacrifices, this book will captivate you. There are details of this Cold War story that have never been revealed before. There's great photos throughout the book too. It's a very entertaining, informative read.

The details of their lives and how they were intertwined, how they coped with their secret lives and polar-opposite governments' interests, and how their families dealt with discovery of their true identities, both then and after the two men passed, is riveting and heart-felt. Ms. Dillon clearly did an enormous amount of research to develop this legacy to two very important men who most certainly shaped history in ways most people would never have known about had this book not been written. Historians and spy fans will be equally engaged.

It is one thing to read about fictional detectives. We do not think about the fact that in the real world spies on both sides have families -- and their lives are impacted by the spy's chosen profession. Dillon has done an extraordinary amount of research to develop the book -- her Dad's CIA colleagues around the globe, papers left behind by her mother, her five siblings, and General Polyakov's family. Dillon has done an incredible ability to get people to open up to her and provide unanticipated insights into the world of spycraft. This is not the fictional James Bond with his glamorous lifestyle and his shaken, not stirred martinis. These are real people who have chosen a dangerous profession. There is no doubt that the Russians, Chinese, and North Koreans today have agents operating in the U.S. Let's hope the CIA has been equally adept at infiltrating those countries.

I usually read fiction (and love the cold war intrigue genre), but I overhead someone talking about this book, went online and ordered based on the many positive reviews - and I'm glad I did!As some have noted, even though the book is factual (and meticulously researched), it reads smoothly, more like fiction; doesn't feel like you are plowing through an educational treatise which is often the case with historical non-fiction.It would be a great basis for a movie or series :)

“Spies in the Family” is an engaging, beautifully written, true story presenting a view of the Cold War as experienced by the families of an American CIA official and a Russian military officer who provided valuable Soviet intelligence to the United States government. The book is engrossing and gripping as it describes the government’s efforts to obtain that information but at the same time ensure the Russian general’s safety. It is entertaining and humorous as well, relating the exploits of Mr. Dillon’s large family as they moved from country to country when he was assigned to various posts around the globe. At a time when our collective interest is again focused heavily on the former Soviet Union, this book provides some fascinating background; and I recommend it highly.

What a great story! It's one thing to read about the intrigue of the Cold War, where spies for them become spies for us. But to have this book centered on the families involved in this remarkable time in our history makes the book so much more appealing. And with the current political climate between the US and Russia, the story is more relevant than ever. Un-put-downable to be more specific! Take this book to the beach!
