I'm giving this book five stars because, for all the pressures out there to be this amazing, faultless, female in today's social media crazed world, this book pushes all of that aside and says, "Be the person, the art, the character, God designed you to be. And never forget how amazingly unique you are compared to all the other girls out there." This book gives a solid foundation for parents of girls to be able to build on. It has solid intention and I would high-five any parent whose home I walked into and found this on the shelf/table/nightstand. I love books!! But in all the rows at the library or local bookstore, there is almost nothing written for girls being raised by Christian parents in a secular world. I have recommended this book for all my mother-friends raising girls, because I feel like this is how to talk to them about body image. Annie F Downs takes the human body, part-by-part, chapter-by-chapter, and talks about the value of each part in a godly, scriptually sound way. Plus, she's a funny lady with a down-to-earth warmth that pours through her writing. Honestly, it was an answer to prayer for me, now that I'm raising an almost 13-year daughter who is an introvert by nature (meaning she keeps a lot of things quietly in her heart), and an only girl with brothers. She's not about to talk to her brothers about body image.The only thing I would recommend is that you carefully consider the character, maturity, and age of your daughters before reading this book. ONLY because it talks, very briefly and very appropriately, about staying sexually pure. It's a topic to talk about with your girl(s). My daughter was not ready to talk about this when she turned 12. She IS ready now that she's turning 13. So be mindful and aware and either choose to read it before her, or read it WITH her. I plan to use it to start a small group girls Bible study. It's my hearts desire for girls to grow up valueing themselves and how incredible they are and to STOP trying to mirror anyone else.Thank you, Annie F Downs, for feeling the burden, and writing this book. I, myself, took a lot from it and saw myself differently as well.
Perfectly Unique is an easy read about a woman whose relationship with God has changed over the years. Throughout the book, Annie Downs shows the readers her perspective about herself and how she has learned to accept herself in life. The book offers ways and suggestions on how to build a stronger, deeper relationship with God. It was an easy read because the messages in the book were relatable and we could connect to what she was saying. The strengths of the book were organization and creativity. The book flowed when we read it and it was interesting to see how she connected the human body to having a strong relationship with God. A weakness of the book was that she started her story from when she was really young and that part of the book wasn’t needed. This book is relevant in the world today because people are getting farther away from having a relationship with God. This book shows people how it’s possible to get through difficult times by having God on your side.
I read this book with my daughter. We read it before she started middle school. The author is relatable and I love how she goes head to toe on how a girls body can be compared and used for Godly purposes. We loved reading her stories and the comfort level through the book.
Wonderful reminders of how awesome our creator is and how we can praise and worship him daily. Recommend for women of all ages.
My middle school girls used this book for our bible study on Sunday mornings. We enjoyed every chapter and how it caused us to look at ourselves the way God sees us. With great biblical insight and tons of laughs, this is a great book to use for young women who need a different perspective than our world is giving them. Congratulations Annie! This was a truly inspired book that I thing every woman should read.
Anything by Annie F. Downs is always great to pass along to my daughters (and I enjoy them too!)
I read this book in 2 days. I could not put it down. I feel it was geared more towards teenagers. I have 2 teenage girls who I am going to have read it. It helped me as an adult with my own stuff going on and also gave me insight on how to chat w my girls about things and explain it on their level!
