These "Everyday Fashions" books are great. You not only get an idea of the types of clothing people wore during any particular decade, but in a few cases, you even get some pricing (too bad it's not all the time, but I digress).The reason I've been getting these books is different from others who have posted here. I don't try to get ideas to sew clothes either on a personal or professional basis (like for a play or something). The reason is that I'm a writer, and I like to see what my characters should be or might be wearing for any particular decade, as I tend to write stories set in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s. What's nice is that the books do a year-by-year thing, so in this instance, you can see what a woman wore in 1919 as opposed to 1925 - and what a difference in women's clothing in just 6 years!Yes, they're in black and white, but I remember a reviewer for one of these books stating that the Sears catalogs were typically in black and white anyway. Besides, I can just as easily imagine different colors for different outfits (and a lot of times, they will tell you what colors are available, as part of the ad).The preface/forward for the 1920s (also includes 1919) is split among pre-flapper, flapper, and nudges into the Depression (1930). Utterly fascinating. And I felt there was a enough of men's clothing included here, too, though this was a fairly conservative era for men's fashions, so IMHO the suits, hats, and coats, etc., would necessarily look pretty similar.

This book is a fantastic resource on 1920s fashion, starting with "everyday" as indicated in the title, but edging on into the "dressy" showing us "every-evening" worthy dresses, shoes, and so forth.There is a nice introduction including brief year-by-year overviews of how things changed, and lots of charming examples.Unfortunately, although the summaries are year-by-year, the book itself is broken into only two sections, 1920-24 and 1925-29. Because the reference in each description is given in page numbers and "real page numbers" are not enabled for the kindle edition, it's nearly impossible to tell which illustration belongs to which year.Another problem with the kindle edition is that the graphics are low resolution. To be able to read the catalog descriptions, you have to blow the image up (not easy on some kindle devices) and even once this is done the text is fuzzy and hard to read.I'm a steadfast kindle reader and love to see publishers migrate their books to electronic versions, but it needs to be done with a little sensitivity and savvy. Fifteen minutes of cross-referencing would have changed this barely usable ebook into a pleasure, and a little strategizing as to how to present readable image text could have made it a delight.

I love these books and have several! I get for costuming ideas and they are perfect as they are actual reproductions from the Sears Catalogs. Just wish they were even bigger!You'll laugh at the prices! The introductions are excellent. They discuss the cultural changes as seen in the ready to wear apparel, the style changes from the previous decade and the nuances of the current decade. This is not haute couture, these are the style everyone wore on a daily basis!

an excellent edition for anyone who wants to understand the styles that dominated the first modern decade of the 20th century. Far from Paris fashion, the clothing depicted in this volume is the stuff or our grand and great-grandparents' lives. The everyday clothing of the housewife and the banker, the bobbed co-ed and the dapper auto mechanic. If you want to learn more about the look of the 20s and how to add a 20's flair to your personal style, this is a great book to add to your library.

The content of this book demands better technology. The pages are not numbered and when viewing on a device, you cannot determine the corresponding catalog page that the text refers to. Sad and missed opportunity. Needs to be fixed so younger readers can learn about this important book.

I enjoyed the historical info, but am glad it was short. The illustrations are very interesting and informative. They are clear enough that I may try to copy some details for my own sewing and millinery.

This series is a must-have for costume designers because it is organized by year and is a reflection of styles that were available to the general public not just the "fashionable elite."

Beautifully designed book, but i found the content somewhat dull and watered down. This book is more "what is design? It's storytelling!" than "how do you tell stories through design," and i was hoping it would be more the latter. So for those of you looking to learn the craft of storytelling design, i don't recommend. I should give the disclaimer though that I'm a storyteller by trade, so maybe for a designer with no knowledge of story structure the book might serve as a decent 101 to concepts like the three act structure.

I kept waiting for the “AHA” moment to be convinced that design is storytelling, but I don’t believe the book ever really made the point.Some design may be storytelling, but I never got the connection with my field of textile and product design.

Offers a good, solid, structured approach for a wide variety of design projects. Liked the real-world examples, and the emotion-linked insights. I'll keep it on my desk.

This is a fantastic book. I love the power of each of the women that is embraced in this story. And the refrain, "God did great things for me - and I did great things for God." Fantastic!The illustrations are fantastic. The bright colors and active pictures drew my children in as we read these stories.

Gritty and Graceful: Caryn Rivadeneira and Illustrated by Sonya Abby SoekarnoWritten for the purpose of hoping that the stories about the women in the Bible will encourage young people to learn more about these women and understand and imagine how God might use us today. There were many women in the Bible that were strong, capable women who did not stand around or wait around to get what needed to be done, done. They were movers and feared God. They were believers and lived faithfully doing what needed to be accomplished and done. Let’s start at the beginning with Eve.Each story is about 75 words and each woman depicted had a special role in the Bible and the author hopes that young children and older children will do more research learning about these remarkable women after reading this book. Eve was married to Adam and lived in a perfect sunshine garden until something happened to change it all. Temptation can get anyone in trouble like Eve, even now children get tempted to do the wrong things. A snake said God was lying when he told her not to eat the fruit in the garden and instead of heading his warning, she and Adam found out what happens when they disobeyed his words. Adam even blamed her for their down fall. “God did great things for me, said Eve, and I did great things for God. This appears at the end of each story and a special verse from the Bible follows. The second story is about Hagar and the next Miriam who was the sister of Moses.Miriam was the sister of Moses and was instrumental in the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. When Pharaoh, the King of Egypt wanted to kill all Hebrew babies, along with her mother they floated her baby brother down the river hoping that God would protect him. Escaping death from the Egyptians and seeing that the Pharaoh’s daughter found him and took him as her own, Miriam was smart and intervened with the daughter offering her mother, as his wet nurse. He grew up at the story continues to tell to free the Hebrew people from slavery and Miriam was alongside him and wrote songs of praise followed by: God did great things for me-and I did great things for God and the verse from the Bible follows. Each story is beautifully illustrated helping young readers learn more about the women in the story and helping it come to life.Next the author writes about Rehab who was a prostitute. Lots of men came to her inn. When two Hebrews knocked on her door and asked her to hide them, they turned out to be spies for the Israelis. She kept them safe and let them stay overnight. She had heard about how powerful the Hebrews’ God was and she wanted to learn more. But the king wanted to kill the spies, but she helped them escape. If you want to learn what happens next read the story and the bible verse at the end. The picture of her helping them climb out of the window says it all.Deborah was a powerful judge, prophet, poet and warrior read her story next and learn about her bravery. Serving as the only female judge during this period devoid of laws before the country got its first king. She helped a mighty warrior named Barak. If you want to learn how she stopped Sisera read this story and learn how she fulfilled her promise to God. The picture opposite the story brings it to life. Hannah is the next story in the book. She prayed for a child and promised God that she would raise that child to do God’s work. Samuel was her child and God answered her prayers. To learn whether she kept her promise to God and if so, how read this heartwarming story and the bible verse that follows. Naomi and Ruth are next followed by Queen Esther.Esther save the Jewish people from destruction, protecting the line of the future Savior, Jesus Christ. Been trying to get my grandson to read but he hates reading. However, he knows all about several "YouTube stars". When I asked him how learned all these facts his answer was "I read it online". So, I researched some of the "stars" he really likes and found this book. He loves it! He really wanted to enjoy reading but just couldn't get in to it.....he asked if I thought he might like reading now.This may not be a chapter book on the list of suggested reading for 4th grade but he is reading and for me that is success!
