This is a fantastic book. I love the power of each of the women that is embraced in this story. And the refrain, "God did great things for me - and I did great things for God." Fantastic! The illustrations are fantastic. The bright colors and active pictures drew my children in as we read these stories.

Gritty and Graceful: Caryn Rivadeneira and Illustrated by Sonya Abby SoekarnoWritten for the purpose of hoping that the stories about the women in the Bible will encourage young people to learn more about these women and understand and imagine how God might use us today. There were many women in the Bible that were strong, capable women who did not stand around or wait around to get what needed to be done, done. They were movers and feared God. They were believers and lived faithfully doing what needed to be accomplished and done. Let’s start at the beginning with Eve.Each story is about 75 words and each woman depicted had a special role in the Bible and the author hopes that young children and older children will do more research learning about these remarkable women after reading this book. Eve was married to Adam and lived in a perfect sunshine garden until something happened to change it all. Temptation can get anyone in trouble like Eve, even now children get tempted to do the wrong things. A snake said God was lying when he told her not to eat the fruit in the garden and instead of heading his warning, she and Adam found out what happens when they disobeyed his words. Adam even blamed her for their down fall. “God did great things for me, said Eve, and I did great things for God. This appears at the end of each story and a special verse from the Bible follows. The second story is about Hagar and the next Miriam who was the sister of Moses.Miriam was the sister of Moses and was instrumental in the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. When Pharaoh, the King of Egypt wanted to kill all Hebrew babies, along with her mother they floated her baby brother down the river hoping that God would protect him. Escaping death from the Egyptians and seeing that the Pharaoh’s daughter found him and took him as her own, Miriam was smart and intervened with the daughter offering her mother, as his wet nurse. He grew up at the story continues to tell to free the Hebrew people from slavery and Miriam was alongside him and wrote songs of praise followed by: God did great things for me-and I did great things for God and the verse from the Bible follows. Each story is beautifully illustrated helping young readers learn more about the women in the story and helping it come to life.Next the author writes about Rehab who was a prostitute. Lots of men came to her inn. When two Hebrews knocked on her door and asked her to hide them, they turned out to be spies for the Israelis. She kept them safe and let them stay overnight. She had heard about how powerful the Hebrews’ God was and she wanted to learn more. But the king wanted to kill the spies, but she helped them escape. If you want to learn what happens next read the story and the bible verse at the end. The picture of her helping them climb out of the window says it all.Deborah was a powerful judge, prophet, poet and warrior read her story next and learn about her bravery. Serving as the only female judge during this period devoid of laws before the country got its first king. She helped a mighty warrior named Barak. If you want to learn how she stopped Sisera read this story and learn how she fulfilled her promise to God. The picture opposite the story brings it to life. Hannah is the next story in the book. She prayed for a child and promised God that she would raise that child to do God’s work. Samuel was her child and God answered her prayers. To learn whether she kept her promise to God and if so, how read this heartwarming story and the bible verse that follows. Naomi and Ruth are next followed by Queen Esther.Esther save the Jewish people from destruction, protecting the line of the future Savior, Jesus Christ. She was chosen in a beauty pageant to become queen to the Persian King Xerxes, but the wicked court official named, Haman wanted all the Jews killed. Esther’s uncle Mordecai convinced her to approach the king and tell him the truth. The ending of this story is quite explicit as the truth and her courage and bravery save Jesus and so many others. God can safe his people even when it seems impossible.I am Mary, we are Mary and Martha and I am the Woman at the well are the next three stories.Mary is an example in the Bible of total surrender to the will of God. Mary tells us that an angel told her she would become the mother of the Savior, through the Holy Spirit even though she was not married to Joseph. She was scared but traveled to Bethlehem where Jesus her son was born. She married Joseph and served as parents to the Son of God. The rest of the story and what happens to Jesus plus the Bible verse you need to read for yourself. Mary is remembered and revered as a loving influence on Jesus and a devoted servant who honored God’s wishes with a simple word: YES.Mary and Martha are next. Mary of Bethany and her sister Martha often hosted Jesus and his apostles at the home of their brother, Lazarus. Mary and Martha were sisters. Love were close as the story tells us. Both followed Jesuses. But, in their own way. Mary sat at his feet listening while her sister Martha worked hard to fix the meal. Martha kept busy in the kitchen making sure that everyone in the party was fed and ran smoothly. But people shamed them both for their choices and they did the same at times to each other. If you want to learn how Jesus loved them and taught them to serve him read the story. The next story is titled I am the woman at the well and a heartwarming story called the Bleeding Woman follows. The final story is Mary Magdalene’s. who stayed faithful to Jesus even after his death? Many stories over the years about her followed. Sometimes miracles happen that renew your faith and hearing her name and seeing Jesus as she was the first person he appeared to after he rose from the dead.A must-read book for all young children and even adults who want to encourage everyone to read the Bible and learn more about these outstanding and courageous women. Teachers, parents, Sunday School teachers, clergy, priests during their sermons, and Catholic schools can incorporate what has been taught in this book for all children of every walk of life. Told in language that everyone can understand, and the pictures beautifully illustrated bringing the story to life, this is a must read.

The Bible is filled with stories of strong women from Eve to Mary and Mary Magdalene. The stories are told simply, but with enough detail to allow girls to understand how each woman did great things for God. I loved that refrain. “God did great things for me, and I did great things for God.” It ties the stories together and makes the repeated point of how these women worked for God.The illustrations are rich and beautiful. They give the child a detailed picture to follow when the book is being read aloud. This is an excellent book to read in a Sunday school class. It is also perfect for a mother to read to her daughter and discuss what it is to be “gritty and graceful.” Older children will be able to read the book for themselves. It’s a good introduction to the biblical world of these women.I received this book from PR by the Book for this review.

In Gritty and Graceful, Caryn Rivadeneira takes fifteen women of the Bible and tells their stories in the most wonderful way. Step into the shoes of Eve, Rahab, Hagar, Mary Magdalene and many more, as each one discovers 'God did great things for me. And I did great things for God.' Highly recommended for every young reader.

Illustrated with bold colors and characters that exude strength of purpose, the assorted women and girls from the pages of the Bible, Old and New Testaments, come to life. The theme that permeates each story is what the woman or girl did for God and what God did for the Woman. It is not an "if you do this, I will do this" situation. It simply states that the action of the woman/girl was meaningful and purposeful and looked upon favorably by God. It also simply states that God moves in the lives of women and does great or wonderful things.Short, tersely written text fleshes out the basics of each story as is appropriate for young listeners or young readers. This is a nice book to teach our young girls that they are of much value to God and can be used of God.DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from PRBytheBook on behalf of Beaming Books and the author to facilitate this review.
