I didn't realize this was part of a series when I bought it, but it reads perfectly as a standalone story. Initially it was the title that caught my eye, but after both laughing out loud and empathizing with the characters within the first few chapters I was hooked. The pacing of this story is absolutely perfect, never dragging, but not so action-packed as to keep from enjoying the characters. And the characters are what makes this book memorable. Jay Stringer managed to write a hit man that is just inefficient enough to invoke empathy, and so completely human that the only thing separating him from the rest of the regular idiots on your typical dating site is that he kills people for a living. It's a well-executed crime story that is also highly entertaining from start to finish, and that is a rare combination.
Combining these elements is a very tricky thing to pull off. Hitchcock classics come to mind, but Jay Stringer's sensibility is much more modern and his Glasgow location is also a world apart. What also makes this story work well is Stringer's insight into human nature and behavior. The finale -- in which the heroine takes off on a breakneck bike chase into the teeth of Glasgow traffic -- screams out for cinematic treatment.
Jay Stringer is new to me, but How to Kill Friends has turned out to be an unexpected joy, a blackish thriller told from several points of view and recounting a really complicated plot line. Witty and well-written. Am now reading the rest of his oeuvre
It took a while for me to warm to this book, but by the end i was deeply in love with the characters. It switches between a hard gangster crime story and a sweet tale of a budding romance.Better than its predecessor, Ways to Die in Glasgow.
I read through the first chapters too quickly. Take your time getting into the setting and the characters. It is a character heavy story. It is a good book.
I really enjoyed Stringer's books. Gritty, believeable, and with enough twists and turns to keep you turning the page.
I really enjoyed this book. Loved the main characters too. It was a good, fast paced read that kept me interested.
