I went in for 2 volumes. The first was shocking and brutal in its depiction of violence and rape, and I had hoped that the second volume would give some meaning to that imagery, but it didn't. Goblin Slayer uses rape as set dressing- think of the way that a Michael Bay movie uses explosions. What bothers me the most is the titillating way that the raped characters are depicted. Desperation is never sexy, but the artist of Goblin Slayer either lack the experience to illustrate a nude female form in a state of desperation, or worse, intentionally make them luscious and sexy at the most desperate moments as a form of fetishism.This unfortunately is a no-go for me. I'm all for exploring controversial and disturbing topics, however Goblin Slayer only has the guise of doing this. The art & tone of the series is lighthearted and fun, with forays into outright guro (pornographic gore). This isn't my cup of tea. If you aren't looking for violence fetish- stay away from Goblin Slayer.
I've previously read the Goblin Slayer novels, so I was hoping the manga would live up to my expectations and do the story justice. Well, it certainly does. The artwork is fantastic, the characters are interesting, and the story is dark--just as a grim fantasy tale with these themes *should* be.Don't be swayed by the moronic review in the recent issue of everyone's favorite poorly written rag, Otaku USA. The reviewer cried about how dark and violent the manga was...missing the very point of the story entirely.Pick this one up, you won't regret it (as opposed to buying a copy of Otaku USA, which is always regrettable).
Let's face it, Goblin Slayer will never make it into an anime without major censoring. So, let the medium of manga suffice for the dark fantasies of the author made into a visual representation. If you don't understand what getting "gobbed" means, please Google it before purchasing this manga. There is a very good reason for the warning sticker on the lower left hand side. This manga is NSFW for artistic reasons, and it is not hentai but would be considered offensive by American parents.Also, for those of you who are purchasing the chapters individually, this volume collects Chapters 1-4. The bonus for buying the omnibus edition is an exclusive short story and omake deformed 4 panel in the end and saving a dollar over the serial purchase. There is no censoring from the serial edition.
Goblin Slayer is a dark fantasy manga that doesn't pull any punches in it's dark fantasy theme with rape and even children being killed. It definitely earns its mature rating and if you're squeamish this is not the book for you. The premise is your standard medieval fantasy with Goblins being one of the many plagues on humanity. With Guilds hired in quests to protect mankind, Goblins are ignored due to their lower rankings and are left to novices who usually don't make it out alive. All but the goblin slayer you is on a crusade against the goblins and vows to wipe them out. The story had me hooked the art is drawn well, the translation is superb. My biggest gripe is the character development they're flat so far and names are uncreative like theirs a priestess character who's called priestess. Names would have been nice. Other than that is was a good read that remind me of Berserk. Like Berserk, I expect an anime adaption to censor some of the scenes for TV. If you want the true Goblin Slayer experience than this manga is the perfect place to start. As a fan of dark fantasy the world intrigue me the premise is great if you can handle the dark scenes than I definitely recommend Goblin Slayer.
Not for kids or, immature teens or adults because it has rape scenes. But if not for that, the rest is amazing! We have a guy who slays goblins, and he is pro at it! He knows what weapons and tools to use and when to use them. Goblin Slayer is such a likable character. The story is a lot of fun, but because of some content, kind of dark, which I personally like because it's not a light-hearted manga.The manga itself arrived in perfect condition so that plus the content and I give it 5 stars
This was a very well done adaptation of the novels. There were a couple of places in the story where I was scratching my head wondering what happened but that may be due to the Japanese style of these things as I'm not a big reader of manga. I love how this is like an old school D&D game that shows the horror of what monsters in such a world could really be like. I'll probably stop reading the novels and just get these instead as a comic seems to fit the narrative a bit better and the art is great!
Definitely not for the faint of heart! Which is exactly why I enjoy this manga and anime so much. I’m a fan of dark fantasy that isn’t afraid to push the boundaries. Goblin Slayer is definitely that in spades. As others have noted this is not for kids. Also not for adults that are easily offended or that don’t understand the genre.The sexual nature of some scenes—including a non-pornographic but graphic rape scene—and violence is brutal, some are saying overly so, but that is what makes this genre so unique and appealing. It is also beautifully written and drawn, with plenty of your typical sexual tension and humor throughout that is common in this genre and makes the story fun.5 stars for Goblin Slayer in my opinion on every level—but again if you are easily offended and/or don’t understand the graphic nature or sexuality of these Japanese genres you’ll probably need to skip this one.
I liked this manga because the main character is strong-willed and has an absolute sense of justice in punishing murders, rapists, thieves, etc. who cannot be reformed. These criminals mostly take the shape and form of "goblins" in this manga. This manga is fun because it blends gaming fantasy and lore into the manga, along with the harsh realities and problems that still challenge human society in the present day. It is fast-paced and action packed with mini-boss fights that won't leave you bored.
