I’m a big fan of this book series, and like other reviews I wish Robert Crane could write as fast as I read. I think a newbie could enjoy this book, but long term fans will have a much greater appreciation for the book because of many references to protagonist, Sienna’s, history. As with all Out of the Box books, “Cold” is a fast-paced, action adventure, superhero (known as meta humans or metas) fantasy, with plenty of violence, mild profanity, and little to no graphic sex. With that said, it seeks to tackle a lot of social issues currently making headlines (in more than one sense). Rape and sexual assault and child sex abuse and their aftermath is a big theme in this one. Crane also continues to expose how the news media may be controlled and exploited by unsavory forces. Also of note is discussion of how politicians may exploit their their positions for personal gain. While the sex crimes issue is handled with some sensitivity and finesse, the other issues are presented in an awkward, sometimes heavy handed manner, with lots of exposition in the dialog. For example, during a lengthy, out of character discussion of corruption between Sienna and a sleazy”news” editor, the editor explains that a PAC is a Political Action Committee and can be legally used in very unethical ways. The dialogue in this section is stilted and has the flavor of a teacher schooling a student. This is not consistent with Sienna’s character at all and broke the rhythm and pace of the story. However the knowledge provided in this section is necessary in order to understand the corrupt politician. It isn’t a big leap to apply a lot of what is said to many officials currently in office. In parallel stories we are presented with badass Sienna Nealon, who historically is very receptive to using quick and violent measures to deal with criminals, but is trying to rein in her violent impulses and work within the very blurred lines her new job in the FBI requires. Then we have Olivia Brackett, a mousy, anxious, newbie law enforcer (who appeared in an earlier work, needing rescue from super villains), the newest agent at the private Meta Human policing agency, run by Sienna’s brother. These two women are polar opposites, but they both have to deal with their respective traumatic histories and various inner demons. Sienna is tasked with preventing the assassination of a Governor (who is of course dirty) by a Meta Human, Olivia has to stop a chaos-loving, Meta, super-villain from destroying Las Vegas. Will these two ladies succeed in stoping the murder and mayhem? Of course they will! But how they achieve their objectives is given in a fun, original, imaginative way.

After a brief respite in Hero and Flashback, the downward slide of this series into oblivion continues in Cold. The book reads more like one of those short stories that series authors get into that feature either throwaway side stories, or developing marginal supporting characters. This one has both. Sienna has to track down the would-be assassin of the governor of Louisiana. This half of the book is completely featureless, and utterly throwaway. There's literally nothing here that advances the series or its main character in any meaningful way. The second half of the book develops one of the minor characters, Olivia, who has the power to repel objects. This half of the book is actually a bit more interesting, simply for the enjoyment of seeing Olivia develop her powers. The only problem here is the angsty level is turned up to an 11, which gets pretty annoying after a while. Overall, you can skip this book and have missed nothing.

Once again another masterful product from Mr. Crane. This book, Cold, is more of a mystery than some of his other books. Usually I can guess where something is going, but in this case the book had me surprised. I love how it is introducing new people, and Sienna is being very careful with what she does....though it does make me miss the old "Kick ass and ask questions later" attitude haha. I really love the different points of view we get from different characters, keeps things interesting. I say it all the time, but really Mr. Crane is masterful in his story telling.

This book, being the longest book in the entire Out of the Box series thus far, gives a great continuation of the struggles Sienna has experienced without her powers. Mr. Crane does a masterful job of pulling together multiple story-lines, thoughts, and characters to keep you pulled in from the beginning to the end. If you enjoyed the previous books, I encourage you to keep it going as this is one book you don't want to miss.

Running the country? This question actually scared me a little. We are all currently wondering that, the deep state, Facebook, Google, the Media. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes. Great story! And a great setup for book 25.

Wow....just....wow. The whole series is just incredible, like nothing I’ve ever read before. When you think you know what will happen, you really don’t. Love the whole series and try to wait patiently for the next book to come out

OK, I get it, writing is about making money, well, at least it is important. Longer books cost more to produce, more expensive proof reading and all that. But Mr. Crane, when you give yourself the space to really tell a story, you are a joy to read. Your character development and action is so very much better when you are not trying to cram it all in to 280 pages. Getting to know the characters in your shorter books is kind of like kissing a girl through a screen door. This book, Cold, developed some rich tasty characters.

It was a little surprising to read a normal story for Siena, one that does not have a major plot yet, or does it? It is hard to figure out in what direction this is going but I would really like to find out.
