''The Chestnut Man'' is the debut novel by the creator of the legendary Danish television series ''Forbrydelsen'' (3 seasons in total), Søren Sveistrup , and even though it is not a bad book, it certainly lacks the distinguishing marks that would set it at the top of the Nordic Noir genre. This novel has all the well-known trademarks of the genre in every aspect, the plotline follows the three plot narrative structure, the main characters are outlined in a way that is reminiscent of other Scandinavian crime fiction protagonists and the setting is the bleak and rainy Copenhagen right between autumn and winter. The truth is that this is a novel that I was expecting for nearly a year as I was eager to read a book written by the man who was behind the ''Forbrydelsen'' phenomenon. The rape and murder of Nana Birk-Larssen in the first season was a story that captivated European and UK's audiences and is today considered as one of the cornerstones of SCF genre along with ''Broen'' and ''Borgen''. I found seasons 1 and 3 to be the most interesting while the story arc of season 2 was weaker, even though the production standards remained in the same high levels as in the other seasons.The story begins when the police founds a young mother dead with one of her arms amputated and right besides her there is a chestnut doll consisting of two chestnuts, for the head and the body, and four matchsticks which represent the limps of the chestnut man. The two protagonists, Naia Thulin, a young CID detective in Copenhagen police force, and Mark Hess, a Europol investigator who was kicked out of Hague and returns to his hometown in a rather unflattering status, are both totally drawn in the case as they are convinced that the killer had just started his gruesome work and more victims are going to follow. I preferred Hess's character, as he is outlined in a more detailed and effective manner while Thulin seems to be a collage of the main characteristics that many Scandinavian crime fiction female heroines have and her character struggles to find its own voice in the book's narrative. The plot is rich and intricate and S. Sveistrup narrates it through multiple points of view, the emphasis being given to the two detectives and the Minister of Social Affairs, Rosa Hartung who is the third main character of the novel. Hartung isdealing with the tragedy of her teenage daughter's kidnapping which took place the previous year. The police, after an excruciating investigation did find the perpetrator who confessed the abduction and murder of young Kristine whose body nevertheless was never found by the authorities. When Kristine's fingerprint is found in the chestnut man found at the first crime scene, the Minister and her family will have to face once again the nightmare which they thought was solved and behind them. The writer remains faithful to his trope of involving the political dimension in his plots, as he did in all 3 seasons of ''Forbrydelsen'', and succeeds in adding an additional narrative layer where nothing is what it seems and intrigue is ever present.The storyline of Kristine's abduction and the present -serial killer- one are slowly merging as the plot unfolds and they are finally connected in the novels' ending which is dignified, though cliched. Unoriginality is the basic flaw of ''Chestnut Man'' and I was rather disappointed as I was expecting something more by the author who won the hearts of worldwide audiences with his screenwriting skills. Perhaps my expectations were too high but as i finished reading, a sense of dissatisfaction came over me. Of course I am willing to give more than one opportunities to Søren Sveistrup and i hope that in his future attempts will be totally worthy of his status among Scandinavian crime fiction's gurus.
4.5 stars.I have to admit something first. I got to about 120 pages into this book and it wasn't really working for me. I don't know why, It just wasn't going well. So I put it to one side for a week or so and read a bunch of other books of differing genres in the mean time before eventually going back to it. Within only a few dozen more pages of reading, it just clicked and I pretty much raced to the end. I am now assuming that it was more of a me thing than a book thing but, as it happened, I need to include it in my review for honesty and transparency.We start the story at the same time as the Minister for Social Affairs is returning to work after taking some time out after the disappearance (and assumed death) of her daughter. Meanwhile, detectives are called to the scene of a rather brutal murder, A woman is found dead with horrifying injuries and with a missing hand. There's a chestnut man found at the scene. Further investigation links the scene to the missing daughter. Could she still be alive and, if so, what about the man who is in prison serving sentence for her death?It's an interesting plot played out by well crafted characters that were all pretty easy to distinguish and connect to. It's non-linear in nature but easy to follow with short punchy chapters. There are all the elements you'd expect in a book of this genre. Direction, misdirection, secrets, lies & duplicitous behaviour, all served up with more than a fair few red herrings on the side. I did have to suspend belief a couple of times but all for the good of the story and its progression so I was more than willing to take one for the team. I also guessed it early but that's also probably more to do with the quantity of this genre books that I read rather than anything the author did wrong.The murders depicted in the story are a bit on the nasty side so it isn't for the faint hearted but, when you do eventually learn who and why then the level of violence is more than justified and in keeping with the backstory but does give the book quite a dark tone throughout.Apparently this is written by the same person responsible for the hit TV show The Killing. I've not watched that but I think on the back of this, I may well give it a try.My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Definitely a contender for crime fiction book of 2019, THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup is a thriller like no other and will set your heart racing and your palms sweating as you turn each page.Naia Thulin is determined to exceed in her career and the last thing she needs is a new partner who has been dumped from Europol due to problems, but work with Mark Hess she must. Their first case together is the murder of a young woman who has been dumped at a local playground and what makes it even more grisly is that her hand has been cut off and a chestnut man doll is left hanging with her. But when forensics discover a fingerprint from a little girl who was killed a year ago, this case takes an even more sinister twist. When another body turns up with another chestnut man, will Thulin and Hess be able to piece together the puzzle of this terrifying serial killer and what has all of this to do with politician, Rosa Harting, who is still grieving for her daughter?Compelling, haunting, dark and twisted, THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup is a terrifying read that you simply cannot put down. The chapters are short and well-paced and I found myself halfway through the book in the blink of an eye without even realising it. The setting is eerie and perfect for the story and the characters are flawed, relatable and memorable which is always a must for me. There are secret, lies, evil, and heartache and I highly recommend THE CHESTNUT MAN for all thriller and crime fiction fans as this is certain to be a book that will be on everyone's lips this year.*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher
