About the Author

AMANDA LUCIDON is an award-winning documentarian, filmmaker, and former freelance New York Times photographer who served as one of the White House photographers responsible for photographing First Lady Michelle Obama from 2013 to 2017. She is one of only a few female White House photographers in history and was the only woman photographer during her time in the Obama White House. Amanda attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she studied communications media and journalism; she also studied photography at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Amanda’s work has been honored by Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism, and the White House News Photographers Association, among others. She was recently named a Turnaround Artist, one of seventy artists working to infuse the arts into struggling schools as part of a nationwide program founded by former First Lady Michelle Obama and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and now run by the John F. At the time, I was a blindly fanatical republican who flew off the handle whenever he was mentioned. To me, he, and Michelle, were America's Great Folly. It was about a year after his second election that everything in life changed for me. I woke up. I realized what I believed as a human being weren't the things I'd been indoctrinated with growing up. It dawned on me that, in reality, I was deeply concerned with the environment, I wanted to be a vegan, I absolutely believed in global warming, I loved the LGBT community... and on and on.Everything I ACTUALLY believed in and wanted to fight for, had so little in common with the leaders I been attempting to elect into power.That's when, for the very first time, I took my first good looked at Obama, and saw him for what he was... And I absolutely fell in love with the family. But most of all, I fell in love with Michelle. I'd read all the news stories talking about how she was vain and shallow, but when I looked at her I saw someone who was generous, gracious, dignified, witty, and loyal. She stood in no one's shadow. She seemed quiet to me, reserved, but capable of speaking with passion and power.I picked up this book at my local Barnes and Noble this morning, and didn't leave the store for another four hours. I was glued. This book portrayed the woman I came to so admire, in a way that brought her to vivid life. That made me feel like she was a familiar acquaintance, even a friend, rather than the distant First Lady I came to love. And I have to say, that in contrast to America's actual Great Folly, who live in the white house now, Michelle stands even brighter as an advocate for equality, dignity, and love.

Amanda, I saw your appearance on “Good Morning America” to promote this book and I immediately went online to purchase. Initially I bought this book for my mother as a birthday gift, which is coming up in a few weeks. My mother loves and adores Michelle so I knew this book would bring her some joy. Like many in this country, our family has had a difficult time with the new administration. A few years ago, we traveled to Washington, D.C. and our first stop was the White House. My mom looked for Michelle in the windows, waving happily with tears in her eyes because she knew Michelle was somewhere in there.We could have been alive at any other point. So we are all lucky to have lived during the past 8 years and seen the Obama administration. We have such admiration and respect for the family, and that was a hard thing to lose. The book just arrived and I started flipping through it, reminiscing about a time that just happened but seems so long ago. Mrs. Obama is the epitome of intelligence, grace, beauty, and compassion. I work in college administration and part of my job includes reviewing essays for various programs. A common question asked of students is “who is your role model?” Mrs. Obama is mentioned consistently and constantly by the students. The thing that caught my attention was how everyone spoke about her like they knew her personally. They wrote about the influence she has had on their lives, how she is relatable, how they are in awe of her perseverance and how she was the “real” power in the White House. (That made me chuckle.)I think we are all extremely lucky to have seen her time in the White House. And you being a first hand witness and close acquaintance have given us a gift to what happened behind the scenes. The stories, captions and photos pulled me in and made me feel an incredible sense of nostalgia. (Also, speaking of gifts I will have to buy another book because it’s only been a few hours and I have worn through my mother’s birthday gift.)Thank you so much for putting this together. Thank you for sharing your stories and time with Michelle Obama with the world.

Lovely book. I didn’t expect so much accompanying text which was a pleasant surprise. This book is a good read as much as it is a feast for the eyes. It has some truly gorgeous photos of the former First Lady.

Mrs. Obama, we are the same age, yet, when I look at you, I am-filled confidence that as an African American female who believed in herself enough to make the accomplishments that you made. Please understand, I am well-aware that you worked very hard to achieve what you have. You, and other women like Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Maya Angelou and Hillary Clinton have proven struggle is worth it. I just want to say thank you ( And the other females that I mentioned) for giving me the courage to continue the fight of my education even with Epilepsy, some have told me that I am stupid for trying at this age, but I am determined to accomplish my goal. I have cared for elderly people for forty years. Now I want a degree in Gerontology. I will stop. Pray for me please, RAF.

Awesome Book, especially if you a photography fan/buff! Amanda did a excellent job narrating the photos she selected for the book. Amanda gives insight into the First Lady's personality and some of the things she was passionate about. I wish there were a few more photos of Mrs. Obama and her daughters, this would have said a lot about mother daughter relationships, especially as a role model. I have both the Kindle and Print versions, the print version for my private collection and the Kindle version for reading time and again. If you love well-crafted photographs, the print version is a must. Hopefully, one day I will be able to get Amanda to autograph my print copy of the book. A job well done Amanda!

This large size edition of this book has been o.o.p. for a number of years. The only edition available until now was the much smaller edition-almost a pocket-size version. Just be aware that this new edition (printed in Oct. 2015) is a bit smaller than the 80's edition by about an inch or so. The original hardcover edition was approximately 13" X 11" X 1 3/4" (the last measurement including the hardcovers), and had 516 pages.This new edition has the same number of pages as the earlier edition. Plus there's no dust jacket, but this new edition's cover is embossed which is pretty cool. I just thought if you were familiar with the original edition you might assume this newest edition is identical to that one. But when all is said and done the slightly smaller dimensions is a minor quibble. This new edition is well worth owning if you don't already have the original version. The printing is nicely done and the essays are informed. Grab this while it's still available if you're into rock poster history--and if you love rock and poster art from those years--when posters became a new art form (1950's and beyond), this is for you. For all of us who remember many of these posters it's a good trip back to another time. And for those who missed that whole era this is a nice signpost for a time in the late '60s/early '70s when music was really important, not just a life-style choice.

So you can look inside the book for the contents etc.What separates this "The Art of Rock" book is that it has "The Numbered Series" for the Family Dog posters FD1 to FD144 and "The Numbered Series" for the "Bill Graham" posters BG1 to BG287.And there is a whole lot more!This book is not cheap, but it is the one to buy.Please note that the vast majority of negative, one star reviews for this book has to do with the fact that there are two size versions of this book, one large, and one small. Almost all the negative reviews have to do with the purchaser getting the small version of this book, and do not have to do with the contents. (I got the larger version of this book.)Also very good it "Classic Rock Posters," (2012), Mick Farren and Dennis Loren.One to avoid is "Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion." This book is not very good.

While this book certainly has a lot of concert posters featured in it, most are very small as they cram anywhere from 6 to 12 on some pages. I was hoping each poster would get its own page. I thought the book focused far too much on the San Francisco psychedelic posters and not nearly enough on other genres. If you want a bunch of tiny pictures of posters of shows by the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors and Country Joe & the Fish, then this is the book for you. If you want to see full size posters of lots of classic rock bands, look elsewhere.

THE ART OF ROCK is a fantastic compilation of the posters that advertised the rock bands that played in the ballrooms and theaters during the San Francisco Sound days of the late 1960's. These posters advertised the acid rock concerts of such bands as The Grateful Dead, Big Brother, Quicksilver, and Jimi Hendrix in brilliant colors that captured the psychedelic era. These beautiful pieces of art are now highly collectable and created by such artists as Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse , Alton Kelly & Victor Moscoso. There are 2 versions of this book ~ One is a very large " coffeetable " book and the other is a mini artbook. Both are quite enjoyable.

Really cool book. Has lots of album covers and posters. Also super heavy. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that a lot of the book has many pictures per page. I was kind of hoping for a lot of full page art so you could really see the details. Still, I love it. If you like music art, pick this up.

But it’s all there! The price was right. It will fit in the palm of your hand.

Back in the 60's I designed a rock poster that is now a collecters item. Very few people ever knew who designed it. I found the poster and my name on page 258 and in the credits he lists me as the artist. This man did his homework. If I'm there then he got the rock art scene covered down to the finest detail. Some of my oldest friends are only now discovering the poster from 1969 and what I created 35 years after the fact. It is my newest history book.

Eisenhower. But most of the work reproduced here in 190 lush color and b&w illustrations is devoted to announcements of musical events (unsurprising, given the shop's location), from Hank Williams to Bo Diddley, Emmylou Harris to Buddy Guy. Visual highlights include a strikingly vivid full-page portrait of Roy Acuff, trailer ads with the iconic immediacy of early Warhol and an ad for pure sausage that practically smokes off the page. Interwoven as well with the authors' engaging oral history (Sherraden and Horvath help to run the shop) are such tidbits as business letters from Bessie Smith and Col. Tom Parker, but the bulk of the book is rightly given to reproducing the posters that so powerfully evoke the music and Nashville itself. Nashville's Hatch Show Print began churning out posters in 1879, when Charles and Herbert Hatch, sons of printer William T. Hatch, took their first job--a handbill advertising celebrity preacher Henry Ward Beecher. With woodblocks and metal type, the brothers developed a distinctive style and soon took on vaudeville acts, minstrel shows, and the budding motion-picture industry as clients. It wasn't until the Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting a few blocks north of the shop, however, that business really took off. Now owned by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the shop, while continuing to make its mark for poster making, does a good business reprinting classic posters of Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, and others. This handsome volume, written in part by current manager Jim Sherraden, surveys Hatch Show Print's ups and downs and relays a number of amusing anecdotes, but its real strength is its glorious gallery of wonderfully evocative posters. My granddaughter, Emily, has looked at this book several times and requested it as a gift for Christmas. She loved it. She is collecting Posters and all items from Hatch Print. My daughter, Diana, her daughter, Emily, and I went to Hatch Show Print exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in November. I highly recommend it to all folks who come to Music City. Hatch Show Print has been in the printing business since 1879 and they conduct tours that are very much worthwhile. The country music stars employed Hatch to print their posters that they were taking to the cities where they were performing. Hatch is steeped in history and is worth your perusal.

Lived in Nashville and a must view and buy if you're in the area!

Hatch Show Print is a major piece of American history, having started their letterpress business in 1879. This book will help you understand how significant their art has been in our culture, especially in the music and entertainment business. Their easily recognizable work is the reason they were chosen to collaborate on the National Day of the Cowboy commemorative series which features original art from a different artist from a different state every year.

This is a really fun book. I didn't know anything about the Hatch Show Print. It is a fascinating and fun read.Great visuals too!

About the Author

My background is rather unique. I was born and brought up in Rome, Italy, a stone-throw from the Vatican wall. For my college education I went to England where he earned a B. A. degree in Theology at Newbold College. From England I came to America for my graduate studies and earned a M. A. and a B. D. degrees at Andrews University Theological Seminary. Upon completing my seminary training in 1964, I went with my wife, Anna, to Ethiopia where I served for five years as Bible and History teacher. In 1969 I returned to my native city of Rome to study at the prestigious Pontifical Gregorian University, where I was the first non-Catholic to be admitted in over 450 years of its history. At the Gregoriana I spent the next five years working toward a Doctoratus in Church History. I was awarded a gold medal by Pope Paul VI for attaining the academic distinction of summa cum laude for my class-work and dissertation From Sabbath to Sunday. After completing my doctorate in 1974, I was invited to teach at Andrews University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. For the past 23 years I have served at Andrews University as Professor of Theology and Church History. To be able to pursue more fully my ministry of research into vital Biblical truths, for the past 26 years I have taught only only from January to May of each year. From June to December I am off-teaching so that I can dedicate myself fully to research timely Biblical truths. The result of this ministry has been the publication of 15 volumes which have helped thousands of people around the world to better understand and experience Biblical truths.

The book traces God's festivals from Bible to history, and who did away with them. It would be of great benefit for a Christian to re-examine the feast days for himself or herself and discover the truth on the validity of feast-keeping in these last days of earth's history: They were not done away with by God, Himself; rather, they were put away by man. History proves this. Great, great, investigation of God's festivals. My gratitude towards God deepened upon reading this book. I thank the author, although he's passed on to his peaceful rest, for the meticulous research undertaken to make this book possible.

This is a good book for those who are interested in ancient Jewish history.I had part 2 of the series which I wanted to read, but you can not read part 2 without part 1.The book was advertised as used but the condition was that of a new book.It took approximately 10 days to arrive.

About the Author

Cheri Gamble is a homeschooling mom of five boys, pastor's wife, and children's ministry volunteer in the local church setting. She and her husband, Tom, have been involved in youth ministry for over 20 years. As part of her responsibilities in youth ministry, Cheri has directed numerous plays and musicals involving children.
