But most of the work reproduced here in 190 lush color and b&w illustrations is devoted to announcements of musical events (unsurprising, given the shop's location), from Hank Williams to Bo Diddley, Emmylou Harris to Buddy Guy. Visual highlights include a strikingly vivid full-page portrait of Roy Acuff, trailer ads with the iconic immediacy of early Warhol and an ad for pure sausage that practically smokes off the page. Interwoven as well with the authors' engaging oral history (Sherraden and Horvath help to run the shop) are such tidbits as business letters from Bessie Smith and Col. Nashville's Hatch Show Print began churning out posters in 1879, when Charles and Herbert Hatch, sons of printer William T. Hatch, took their first job--a handbill advertising celebrity preacher Henry Ward Beecher. With woodblocks and metal type, the brothers developed a distinctive style and soon took on vaudeville acts, minstrel shows, and the budding motion-picture industry as clients. It wasn't until the Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting a few blocks north of the shop, however, that business really took off. Now owned by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the shop, while continuing to make its mark for poster making, does a good business reprinting classic posters of Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, and others. This handsome volume, written in part by current manager Jim Sherraden, surveys Hatch Show Print's ups and downs and relays a number of amusing anecdotes, but its real strength is its glorious gallery of wonderfully evocative posters. My granddaughter, Emily, has looked at this book several times and requested it as a gift for Christmas. She loved it. She is collecting Posters and all items from Hatch Print. My daughter, Diana, her daughter, Emily, and I went to Hatch Show Print exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in November. I highly recommend it to all folks who come to Music City. Hatch Show Print has been in the printing business since 1879 and they conduct tours that are very much worthwhile. The country music stars employed Hatch to print their posters that they were taking to the cities where they were performing. Hatch is steeped in history and is worth your perusal.

Lived in Nashville and a must view and buy if you're in the area!

Hatch Show Print is a major piece of American history, having started their letterpress business in 1879. This book will help you understand how significant their art has been in our culture, especially in the music and entertainment business. Their easily recognizable work is the reason they were chosen to collaborate on the National Day of the Cowboy commemorative series which features original art from a different artist from a different state every year.

This is a really fun book. I didn't know anything about the Hatch Show Print. It is a fascinating and fun read.Great visuals too!

About the Author

My background is rather unique. I was born and brought up in Rome, Italy, a stone-throw from the Vatican wall. For my college education I went to England where he earned a B. A. degree in Theology at Newbold College. From England I came to America for my graduate studies and earned a M. A. and a B. D. degrees at Andrews University Theological Seminary. Upon completing my seminary training in 1964, I went with my wife, Anna, to Ethiopia where I served for five years as Bible and History teacher. In 1969 I returned to my native city of Rome to study at the prestigious Pontifical Gregorian University, where I was the first non-Catholic to be admitted in over 450 years of its history. At the Gregoriana I spent the next five years working toward a Doctoratus in Church History. I was awarded a gold medal by Pope Paul VI for attaining the academic distinction of summa cum laude for my class-work and dissertation From Sabbath to Sunday. After completing my doctorate in 1974, I was invited to teach at Andrews University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. For the past 23 years I have served at Andrews University as Professor of Theology and Church History. To be able to pursue more fully my ministry of research into vital Biblical truths, for the past 26 years I have taught only only from January to May of each year. From June to December I am off-teaching so that I can dedicate myself fully to research timely Biblical truths. The result of this ministry has been the publication of 15 volumes which have helped thousands of people around the world to better understand and experience Biblical truths.

The book traces God's festivals from Bible to history, and who did away with them. It would be of great benefit for a Christian to re-examine the feast days for himself or herself and discover the truth on the validity of feast-keeping in these last days of earth's history: They were not done away with by God, Himself; rather, they were put away by man. History proves this. Great, great, investigation of God's festivals. My gratitude towards God deepened upon reading this book. I thank the author, although he's passed on to his peaceful rest, for the meticulous research undertaken to make this book possible.

This is a good book for those who are interested in ancient Jewish history.I had part 2 of the series which I wanted to read, but you can not read part 2 without part 1.The book was advertised as used but the condition was that of a new book.It took approximately 10 days to arrive.

When I was a teenager I was always fascinated with the history of the rise of Islam. Looking at maps of Arabia and the location of Mecca, I always found it somewhat strange that Mecca should be located on a major trade route and that trade goods would pass through the desert on caravans that stopped at Mecca when it seemed that they could quite easily go by boat up the Red Sea. I had already studied the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians and was well aware that with the technology available, it was far cheaper to transport goods by sea than by land, so why would the Arabs not use the Red Sea to conduct their trade? At the time I just assumed that the experts must know why, perhaps the Red Sea was not navigable in the same way as the Mediterranean? Perhaps there were not enough natural harbors and that the currents are treacherous? Or there were just too many pirates. So I did not give it too much thought after that, assuming that the experts in the field simply understood why, though I never read any book that explained this curious anomaly. Twenty years later I came across the work of the skeptical school of early Islam who are beginning to question that a great trading center known as Mecca could have even existed in such an empty remote part of the desert not directly on a major trade route.Meccan Trade and the Rise of Islam is an incredibly detailed study of what pre-Islamic trade 'might' have been like. Crone explains that there are too many uncertainties and far too little written or archaeological data to draw any definite conclusions, but what we do know is that the traditional narrative about a prosperous trading city in the middle of the desert simply do not add up. Not only was Mecca located in a barren valley devoid of agriculture, but also not on any plausible ancient trade route. Trade with India and Africa was indeed conducted by sea, not land, so Mecca should really have been located on the coast. Furthermore Crone explains that there are no written records that mention a city called Mecca at all prior to the Rise of Islam. Crone explains that in the Islamic Era, the city of Mecca was only able to feed so many Muslim pilgrims because regular grain imports from Egypt were established, and these imports were brought in by boat via the Red Sea, not by land.The only drawback to this work is that it is perhaps too detailed and meticulous for the casual reader. The only one that I have found thus far is by R.B. Serjeant which can be read on Jstor here:[...]This critique is so pathetic that it only strengthens Crone's ideas. Serjeant begins with an ad hominem attack on Crone's character and what he perceives are her motivations, and then dedicates the rest of his critique to showing the reader that he knows more Arabic than her and then brags about all the times he has spent living with Bedouins in the desert without bothering to explain how any of that is relevant to what trade in Pre-Islamic Arabia might have been like. Surely someone in the field of primitive Islam must have written a better critique of this work? And if they haven't then why not?

$89 is awefully expensive. Very detailed booked. Patricia goes into great detail explaining why Mecca could not have been in the location it said to have been based on it's claims to be on a major trade route and was a large centre of commerce. She goes through every major spice and trade common to arabia at the time and the trade networks that existed. This may bore people, but it is critical to debunking the myth of Mecca.I have looked at maps and often wondered how Mecca was a major trading place, being in the desert with little resources, how could it have supported a major influx of foreign travellers. Look even at pictures from mecca from 100 years ago, it was nothing more than a dusty outpost, nothing like how the Quran describes it.

Patricia Crone's book is cited in nearly every new book on Islam's origin. And After reading it I can tell why. The book examines the history of the trading routs in the region, mecca was in no way on a trading route. Then, the author review and question every item that was said to be traded by the meccans. the results are mostly negative. what mecca may have traded with others would in no way explain it's rise as a commercial city in the heart of the desert. In fact it's obvious , if such trade ever existed , that it was not an international trade but a local one, which again doesn't explain it's supposed wealth. This study , although a controversial one , remains unchallenged.

Excellent book by one of the best in early Islamic history. The book not only questions traditional views of early Islamic and pre-Islamic trade, but it looks analytically at alternatives and how they may or may not be correct. This is an excellent read for those who want to look beyond European stereotypes and consider what might actually have occurred given the limited contemporary documentation.I know though that Dr. Patricia Crone did not make the word and sentence errors occurring throughout the digitized version. In a few cases, the sentences are illegible, in others, the reader must slow down to take the time to understand what should have been printed but was not. In all, great book but horrible digitization effort (or lack thereof).

A fantastic work! Should be a part of, not only High School student's studies, but also people who may be confused about the world it describes.

I was skeptical until this book made it clear to me there might be a major part of the history missing for that region.

Well researched and well thought out. Raises a lot of questions and pokes even more holes in traditional understandings of the beginning of Islam. Only problem with the digital version is many formatting and spell problems. Still an outstanding study, well worth the time spent studying.

The Common Place of Law, by Ewick and Silbey, asserts that law exists autonomous from while being constitutive of daily life, with legality defined at one point as a social structure actively and constantly produced in what people say and do (however it must be noted that the others give other definitions of legality later in the book). Based on this conception, the authors interviewed a random sample of 430 adults in New Jersey to gain insights into their interactions, finding that people act before, with, or against the law. While this analysis brings forward interesting issues, it left many questions.First, there are basic questions regarding methodology. A random sample that only takes into account adults in New Jersey may not get a wide range of people's experiences with the law given that New Jersey has different laws, methods of judicial administration, and enforcement policies than other states. A further methodological issue concerns the fact that the interviews took 2-3 hours, eliminating those who do not have that much free time.Second, the authors left the reification issue partially unexplained. They assert that individuals construct meanings that, once institutionalized, become part of the systems that constrain future meaning making; when these ideas are constructed, how long do they take to reify, and how do they change after reification? Further, because Ewick and Silbey's theory allows for schemas to change with the introduction of new information, can reification, which by definition concerns treating something as a concrete entity, ever really occur? A schema is undoubtedly difficult to change, but it is not impossible to change, thus perhaps reification is not the proper term given the challenge at hand.Third, the idea of law being autonomous from while at the same time constitutive of everyday life is afflicted by the problem of dualism--if there is a duality between that which affects and that which is affected, then how are the two mediated? In other words, if law is both particular and general, then how is the particularity linked to the generality? Rather than a duality, perhaps the authors could argue for a unity in which all things coexist, thus each is able to influence the other.Fourth, more information on how societal schemas change over time would be helpful. If schemas can be changed by new information, how is this new information accepted, and why are some pieces of new information accepted while others are not? Using the authors' example of witchcraft, why is it that Americans by and large no longer subscribe to paganism, while in some areas it is still practiced? Some schemas must be more rigid than others, but why is this especially given the fact that the same information is available to most everyone?In summary, the authors brought forward some interesting points, but further explanation would be enlightening.

The richness of this book comes from four hundred thirty interviews that support the text. The gist of the book is that people have three takes on the law: before the law, against the law, and with the law."Before the law" is an attitude of awe and respect for the institution. Faith in that day in court, that statue of blind justice and the policeman is my friend. "Against the law" is an attitude of resistance to the institution. Law as a caprice of the powerful, and resistance the right way to deal with it. "With the law" is an attitude of game playing with the institution. I didn't make the rules, but me and my lawyer, we sure as hell will play the game. People shift and change among these modes depending on where they are in life, the particulars of the situation, and growing experience with the law.The biggest contribution of this book is in highlighting the game playing aspect of dealing with law. I think game-playing gets short shrift from other law authors who may be stuck inside their very serious institution. Most other books reduce game-playing to simple economic theory and don't pay enough attention to the human side of gaming with the law. I mean, really. Just look at how big the sports section of the Sunday paper is versus the economic analysis section! Games are a big part of everyday life. Ewick & Silbey give game-playing the appropriate type of attention. Big bravo.My only criticism is that the language of this book is mainly for an academic audience, and thus I give it only four stars-sorry. The writing could be de-academicized and made more powerful and popular. Overall it is an excellent, meticulously researched bookI got the book for its cover-the picture of chairs in newly shoveled parking space. Now that's a real hotbed of attitude in the informal/formal law divide. Thanks to the authors and worker-bees for all their work.

In her book, "The Physics of NASCAR", author Diandra Leslie-Pelecky takes the reader inside the sometimes ignored world of engineers and gearheads to get a glimpse of the science that is used to make a car travel at speed of nearly 200 mph while still being consistently drivable. Pelecky follows the story into the garages and mobile offices (haulers) of several NASCAR teams to get an up-close understanding of the issues that car fabricators, engine builders, crews and drivers face in their quest to capture the checkered flag at the end of a long week of work.The book is very much written at an introductory level with no prior knowledge of physics, chemistry or auto-racing assumed. With chapters on nearly everything of any importance related to going fast and doing it safely, Pelecky does an excellent job of balancing the technical side of the topic with stories and descriptions of the real human beings that make it all happen. Nowhere will the reader feel like they have gotten lost in an avalanche of technical jargon and yet most readers will feel as if they have a much deeper understanding of what it takes to run fast.The only contention I might have is that I would have liked to have seen a bit more information on the specific effects of aerodynamic changes and a discussion of the engineering of tires to provide more grip. These however are minor points that are likely more based on personal preference than any real defect int he book.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in NASCAR or auto racing in general and who finds the network spots on the car leaving them wishing for more. You'll find most of that more here in a way that is easily accessible to nearly anyone.

This book would translate nicely into a Discovery Channel series. You know, high-interest, science-to-the-masses kind of stuff. Give it a year; it's going to happen! I am a fan of "The Physics Of.." books, and some disappoint: they can be so thorough [read hyper-mathematic] as to resemble homework; or they can be so simplified they read like a children's book. Most land somewhere in between. Take, for instance,Adair's book on the Physics of Baseball: it's fantastic, but I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. It contains more mathematics than the average Joe (or Jane) is equipped to handle. But this book, The Physics of NASCAR, follows the Goldilocks Principle: it's just right. Not too pithy, not too watered down. High interest, easy access, entertaining insights. If you like popular science, you'll enjoy this book. Personally, I love the way the author pulls in characters from the NASCAR family. It gives the book personality! She does a great job with the science as well. There were a couple of bobbles here and there, but she covered a LOT of ground. This book is really a text in applied physics (and biology and chemistry), sans the quantitative rigor. I would love to adapt it to my high school curriculum--it would certainly grab my students' attention. If you teach physics at the high school or college level, this book is the perfect supplement to a course on physics for non-majors, or simply a means to raise the interest/relevance level for the concepts you teach. Buy it. If it doesn't work out, then re-sell it on Amazon's Marketplace. Now there's a win-win situation! Hope that helps...

This is an entertaining, informative, and very unusual book. The author has actually written two books, one about NASCAR technology and one about elementary physics; however, she has melded them seamlessly into something rare: a serious academic book that is so entertaining that you forget it's serious.On one level, the book is about how NASCAR race cars are engineered, constructed, and adjusted to enable them to achieve two often contradictory goals: safety and high performance. On another level, the book is about the basic principles of physics and chemistry, including motion, fluid dynamics, combustion, materials science, etc. The uniqueness of the book derives from the way she combines the two, using car racing to illustrate the scientific principles.I'm a NASCAR fan, and I have a pretty good background in science. I found this book engaging on both of those levels. At the same time, I think it would be a very valuable book for a casual fan-- or even a non-fan-- to read. It makes the sport come alive as something much, much more than just a bunch of guys who stomp on the gas and turn left.I thought this was a valuable, enjoyable book, and I recommend it most highly.

This is an excellent book about how NASCAR race cars are engineered to perform like they do. The author is a college Physics professor and the book is written to explain with basic scientific terms and knowledge that the average reader can understand written in a very interesting manner.The areas discussed include aerodynamics, materials,engines, fuels, tires, shocks, drivetrain and others, and the author spent time with Elliott Sadler and the 19 team both at the shop and the track to help the NASCAR fan understand how things work like they do. I am a long time fan and also an engineer and there was a lot of info that I can use when I give fans pit road and garage tours at Michigan Intl Speedway. This book will help me explain things to the fans in a easy way.This would also be a great book for a high school aged race car enthusiast/budding engineer to help them understand how school subjects like Physics can have exciting real world applications. I was a big racing fan when I was taking physics in high school and engineering courses in college and the textbook problems we had did not seem very relevant or interesting. A book like this would have made those subjects a lot more fun.I own many many NASCAR and racing books and this is one of the best. Highly recommended!
