This is a tale of paddling solo through the inland passage waters of the Alaska Panhandle. On reading the book, I am left with this regret: That Sutherland did not write quite a few more. While the reader learns about geography, solo paddling and camping, wildlife encounters, and much more, what makes the book such a good read is Sutherland's presentation of the way she thinks and how she manages her relationship to the wilderness before her. I described the journey as "improbable" in the headline because I am familiar with the very small, inflatable canoe she paddled for hundreds of miles through tides, waves, and strong winds. I wouldn't have thought it possible, yet she obviously had the skill and depth of experience to manage it extremely well. I believe the story is about her first such trip in those waters, though nicely seasoned by reflections developed over many more years of returning to the same area. Having become interested in canoe/kayak camping in recent years, I have read my share of books by many good authors in relation to the subject. Sutherland unquestionably belongs with the best.

Classic Audrey Sutherland -- unpretentious, curious, learned, adventuresome and independent. I once took a kayaking class from Audrey at the University of Hawaii and found her to be not only all of the above things, but a most generous and sharing person very well-respected not only in the local kayaking community, but well-known nationally as well. Paddling North is her third book and is typically not only well written and informative, but gave me the feeling of being in the kayak each challenging day myself. A tale of personal solo adventure at its very best and highly enjoyable!

Would you like a guide to paddling Alaskan coastal waters? How about a guide with 8000 miles experience paddling solo in an inflatable kayak? Audrey Sutherland shares with you her diary at age 60 paddling solo 800 miles from Ketchikan to Skagway. Most every launching and landing is a small adventure. Wind, tide, waves, cooking, camping in the rain, boat and gear care, all require meticulous planning. "Go simple, go solo, go now." she tells us. What do kelp pickles taste like? Her book includes about a dozen maps annotating her route, spotting the points of interest in her story. I felt I was cheating when I followed her route with Google Earth and looked at Panoramio photos along her journey. Having read her book of her younger days swim camping around the pali cliffs of Molokai and Kauai (Paddling My Own Canoe) I found myself unable to wait for the paper or kindle editions of this new book. If you liked Neil Frazer's Boat Camping Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), you are sure to want this book.

Audrey Sutherland SHOULD be a household name like Georgia OKeefe, and John Muir. What she did, for the art of finding beauty in silence and nature is captivating. Only after learning of her from Patagonia blog, i bought her books and relish her writing and experience as a naturalist, and explorer, and a woman. I highly recumbent all her writings, and may she rest in peace in the stars above. Her writing takes silence, concentration and vision. I would love to see someone get her life to the big screen so more people can know of her adventurous and loving spirit.

My daughter, a librarian, checked this book out for her father when we were visiting her this fall. He enjoyed to book so much he suggested it would be a good one for my book club to read. The short length of the book was the initial appeal since over half of the club members are still working (secondary and college reading teachers). I loved the book so much I bought my own copy to keep and enjoy again and again (like the good wine and cuisine Sutherland enjoyed throughout her journey). Every club member had different reasons for why they enjoyed the book. I loved it because my husband and I enjoyed our recent round trip cruise from Vancouver to Hubbard Glacier; Sutherland's vivid descriptions brought back wonderful memories. Like Sutherland, several members are working single mothers who connected to that part of Sutherland's story; one member said that reading this book helped her to discover a similar strength in herself. To quote one member, "I think it was a deeper discussion than we have had before! I admire the inner strength in each of you."

Well written and soothing nonfiction which makes any kayaking I've done look like child's play. Hopefully you've paddled yourself or this might not ring your bell. Audrey is quite the paddler AND cook. She eats better kayaking than I do at home with the resources of a full kitchen and grocery store right up the street. Really cool book. She also mentions other books which sound very informative too. The author raised four kids and has been on adventures throughout the world.

I admire Audrey"s spirit to undertake and accomplish this adventure when most would have discounted her for her age and equipment. While the book isn't one you'll stay up all night to read, she writes the story well enough to make endless days of paddling not too tedious. That can be hard.

I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing journal! Though it was a little slow at times, I felt as though I was paddling along with Aud, following her route with her maps. Truly an inspirational story!

I loved Fooled by Randomness and Black Swan and seriously disliked the Antifragility. I am very glad to say that with the Skin in the Game Taleb is back. Opinionated, at times rude and angry, but someone you feel you should listen to.When I buy books I usually read one star reviews. Some of them are crap (my book arrived with six missing pages!), but some give you a pretty good idea of what you are going to find. There is one star review that gets close to 5000 words limit, followed by the long thread of comments exchange where the replies by the original author get, again, to the said limit. If someone gets that fired up by the book that he regurgitates thousands of words - it's well worth a few bucks and I simply must read it.Anyway, as always with Taleb, I now have a new reading list based on his footnotes. Yes, he comes across as an angry man. Yes, he has irrational dislike of academics (as do I) and policy makers. Yes, some of his statements are contradictory and yes, sometimes he goes too far in his arguments. But this is exactly what makes books worthwhile the time spent reading them. Contradictions have to be sorted, but to do so you have to think about the subject and come to your own conclusions, and this involves effort, and this is what makes books stimulating.I highly recommend this book.

Skin in the Game is at the same time thought-provoking and original but also contradictory and sometimes absurd.Let’s start with the cons:1. I certainly won’t be the first to notice that Taleb can be mean-spirited. But why does he insist on presenting his views in this way? The communication of his ideas, often profound, does not require a mean-spirited or condescending tone. For however brilliant Taleb thinks he is, his skills in persuasion are severely lacking; he’s alienating a significant readership that may have otherwise been more receptive to his ideas.Not very far into the book we see Taleb take cheap shots at Steven Pinker, out of nowhere, discussing a topic that has nothing to do with any of Pinker’s actual ideas or positions. One wonders why Taleb cannot just present his ideas without the incessant personal attacks and condescension.2. His overall philosophy appears to be self-refuting. He reviles “intellectuals,” professors, and thinkers while praising “doers” and men of practice. He’s particularly distrustful of those who give advice for a living. Here’s Taleb:“Avoid taking advice from someone who gives advice for a living, unless there is a penalty for their advice.”So should we then ignore THIS advice? As far as I can tell, Skin in the Game is a work of philosophy, an intellectual exercise that argues against the value of intellectual exercise. This is the same self-refuting logic of relativism—in that the statement “everything is relative” is self-refuting because the statement itself needs to be absolute.If Taleb is wrong in any part of his philosophy it doesn’t appear that he would incur any penalty (no skin in the game). The upside for him is book sales with little to no downside risk, so by using his own logic we should conclude to not trust him.Also, to the extent that you believe ideas have power you might find yourself disagreeing with Taleb’s extreme position that no good ideas could possibly come from someone in an academic position (particularly from the reviled economists).Except that Taleb uses economic theories to frame his thinking. The Tragedy of the Commons, something Taleb discusses in his book, was developed by the economist William Forster Lloyd in his armchair. Even Taleb’s Black Swan concept is a reformulation of the Peso problem developed by...economists.I’m sure anyone can think up examples, rather easily, of useful ideas that were discovered by intellectuals or from university research.3. Taleb obsesses about the superiority of practice over academics and theory. This is a questionable proposition.As just one example, a recent study in the American Journal of Medicine concluded that “patients whose doctors had practiced for at least 20 years stayed longer in the hospital and were more likely to die compared to those whose doctors got their medical license in the past five years.”My own personal experience corroborates this, as a medical student was able to correctly diagnose what the attending physician had missed on a trip to the ER. Very experienced, practical individuals sometimes perpetuate bad habits and fail to keep informed of the theories and academics that lead to better practice. This point is completely lost on Taleb.4. Taleb’s definition of rationality as any action that promotes survival is patently false, as a simple thought experiment can show. Imagine a hypothetical survival machine is available for your use. By plugging yourself in, it will guarantee and maximize your life span and, on a social scale, maximizes reproduction. The price is that the machine also inflicts a high degree of pain and cuts you off from contact with other people.According to the logic of Taleb, the rational thing to do would be to plug into this machine. Of course, no one would volunteer to do this because survival is not what motivates rational behavior. Any rational agent would choose one year of pleasant life over 100 years in the survival machine, because actions have value according to how they promote or are perceived to promote well-being or pleasure.Taleb, using this more believable definition of rationality, could have used it to argue the same points, namely how religious belief cannot be called irrational if it promotes well-being, which includes psychological well-being and survival but not survival alone.The pros:That Taleb is antagonistic and holds some questionable views does not mean that he’s wrong about everything. When not being demeaning or taking extreme positions, Taleb writes about some of the most original, thought-provoking, and profound ideas. And even when you find yourself disagreeing with him, he makes you think. For this reason alone, the book is worth checking out.The idea that the extent of people’s stakes in particular outcomes is a critical yet underrated determinant of events is a profound idea with several implications, which Taleb skillfully explores throughout the book. And his idea that you should have to pay some kind of penalty for decisions that negatively impact others—risk sharing vs. risk transfer—is a solid framework for thinking about a host of issues. Of course, these ideas would be easier to swallow if presented with a little more humility, but I suppose we should know what to expect from Taleb by now.

If you hate BS, this is the book for you. Stop being "bullied" for what you think by academics and journalists who have no skin in the game. They have nothing to lose by being wrong (Think Viet Nam, Syrian, the 2008 economic melt down). Trust the do-ers who suffer the consequences for being wrong ( business people who take risks), This book has to be studied. It follows from Mr. Taleb's previous work which provides the science and mathematics behinds this work. It requires a "deep dive" and understanding. A casual book reviewer or journalist would not have an easy time reviewing this book. Be prepared to study, the results are very rewarding not matter what your field of interest.

I bought this course because I kept coming across Dr. Verschuuren's YouTube videos as I sought answers for database set-up problems, and I'm not disappointed. This author has such an orderly mind and such good sense about what's relevant and important and what the learner needs to know when. The course presentation is nothing fancy, just a lot of slides to click through, but simple is good when there's good thought behind the content. I feel that I got an efficient, coherent, and thorough introduction to Access tools. Unlike Microsoft's Access training, which confused me with an undifferentiated mass of detail on all program options, this training is clearly focused on what people practically need to design and use databases, and on the specific features, functions, methods, procedures, and techniques that will be useful to them.

Works as described. Pretty good.

A very thorough and clever teaching method. By including questions in slides one is almost forced to concentrate on the subject material.Complemented by the author's Youtube videos I believe I will master ACCESS by the end of the year. Well done all round material.

Worst investment that I ever made.

I found this title very comprehensive and a good refresher for anyone who has been away from the details of using Access (as I have). There was at least one instance where I did find an error in the supporting databases. It was a bit tedious at time to navigate back and forth between the Powerpoint slides and the underlying support database ...but not too bad once you got the hang of it.I found myself jumping all around the various modules ...although I think there is a best order in which to take the whole course. I wish there had been additonal testing after a module was completed to test a student's mastery of the material. I also have the Access VBA module and I not sure how well it is integrated into the "main" access module. All in all The material was very comprehenive. -Mark

Well-organized and thought provoking. Although it is a little beefy for a casual reader, it is still a substantial collection of one of the most insightful critical philosophers of the world. If you want to read Marx, I'd highly recommend this.

Not a favorite of mine; however, this book was an essential for a college course.

Marx is well explained in this book, his view is more important today than ever, the rule of the capitalist elite and the future of work for the disenfranchised is approaching the crossroads that Marx envisioned. The only point not included, was the role of the consumer, which is one connection that is as important as the role of worker and exploiter, Capitalists need consumers, even if the worker is largely displaced by robots. Seen more clearly today is the role of the taxpayer, domestic borrower, and consumer, as the basis of all wealth for capitaist exploitation, to extent that these three classes of worker may lose everthing to the capitalist who also creates the medium of exchange backed only by law.

Karl Marx is absolutely brilliant concerning his approach to peasant revolution. Such examples of his brilliance is China, Russia, Southeast Asia, and Cuba. Marx understood the importance of the proletarian's existence in the social order and food chain. In these selected writings, Marx discusses the manipulation of the proletarian by the bourgeois social class, the importance of a collectivist society, the failures of capitalism, the advantages of socialism, etc... Ultimately, Marx states that, with the exception of China, capitalism will evolve into perfect communism. He also states on page 175 10 characteristic of a capitalistic society evolving into communism: 1)abolition of land property and rent, 2)a progressive income tax, 3)abolition of all inheritance, 4)confiscation of property, 5)centralization of credit into the state, 6)centralization of communication, 7)state-owned businesses, 8)equal liability to all labor, 9)abolition of difference between town and country, and 10)free education in public schools. This book is an excellent edition to any student of political philosophy.

Book was in great condition when I received it. Needed this specific edition for a course.However, the content hasn't changed at all from my other edition (this is a joke...), it still sucks. Glad Marx could sit in a library and preach to everyone else, while never actually experiencing anything that he spoke on.As a person who studies logic I can attest that anyone who studies, or just loves, logic and has never read this book will hate it. It is full of fallacious arguments, I mean my God!But who knows, communism and Marx are the best thing since sliced bread nowadays, so I may be wrong in thinking fellow lovers of logic will hate it.

This book is an absolute must lecture for everybody, but especially for those who find themselves in charge of a team, be it a business, group of students, civic association or your own family. In 1996 I was put in charge of conducting a church choir who had inherited a lot of nasty problems from the former director. Reading this book and applying what it says saved my job and brought my team back to peak performances. Since I came to America I am a Toastmaster, and every time I give a speech about leadership and human relations in my club I recommend this book to my fellow members and have given away several hard copies of it.If everyone went by this book we all truly would live in a much better and pleasant business and political environment.

My Dad gave me a copy of this when I graduated highschool in the 90s but I wasn't "ready" for it yet, I don't even think I read it to be honest. Now I'm 37 and realizing that I've put my personal growth on the back burner for entirely too long. I had pretty much given up on making new adult friends. I had actually self-diagnosed myself with Asperger's because I was having such a difficult time trying to figure out why people (including myself) do the things that do. The realization that my marriage was being effected by my nearly empty toolbox of social skills promoted me to take personal responsibility and shoulder the blame myself for once instead of blaming everyone around me for everything. I grew up with a hypercritical Mother so I think I had promised myself that I would never be criticized again, even if that meant writing people off the instant I felt like I had made myself vulnerable enough to be hurt by them. I couldn't find the copy that my dad gave me so I ordered a new one and chapter 1 alone is changing the way I look at EVERYTHING. I've been plagued with mild depression/anxiety for 20 years and I'm realizing that I've developed some unhealthy defense mechanisms to cope with these issues. I never turned to drugs or alcohol, but the fortress-like walls I've constructed to deal with criticism (real or perceived) aren't much better for me. I've re-read and taken notes on the first section of the book several times now and my wife is noticing and she seems quite relieved, i had no idea I could impact another persons life so strongly. Like I said, I am only getting started with the book and it has already helped me enough to warrant a 5-star rating. This book has stood the test of time for a reason and I can see why now. The strategies are applicable to and helpful in all aspects of my life so far, from my marriage to my job, and even to the way I interact with clerks in gas stations. I've read numerous self help books in the past, seen a therapist for 3 years, been through the gauntlet of antidepressants, etc, and until now I thought I was wasting my time. I've been learning things all along, but I never learned how to actually apply the things I had learned until now. This book speaks my language and if your background sounds even remotely similar I have a feeling that you'll agree.

I wish I had purchased this book sooner.Dale Carnegie's advice has remained constant and applicable across the years for a reason. It's simple and his techniques make perfect sense. If you're anything like me, you'll be kicking yourself when you see how you could have handled situations differently. I'm being transformed from a socially awkward, timid and defensive person, to someone that seems collected and confident.If you're having troubles in life and simply can't figure out what you're doing wrong, this is a fantastic place to start. In my honest opinion, several principles in this book are repeated around the book. I don't see it as a disadvantage, because repetition is the key to learning. I did think several of the principles explained in the book are common sense, but I found that it could be easy for a person to react quickly to conflicts. This book has taught me the importance of staying in control and how beneficial it is to be in control of our behaviors and act in a way of service to others. The examples described in the book made it simpler to understand the concepts that Dale is teaching. I recommend this book if you would like to improve your skills with people. This book is especially beneficial for those who are working on their businesses and close relationships.This book is divided into four parts. The first half of the book discusses techniques in handling people and how to have people like you. The final half of the book gives instructions about how to win people to our own thinking and how to be a leader by changing people without offending them or causing resentment.In the first part of the book, it is divided into three principles. The first principle emphasizes the importance of avoiding criticism and he describes working with people as: working with people of logic. He further describes complaining and criticizing as a foolish task to do and how it takes a person of character to understand, forgive, and have self-control. Principle # 2 describes the importance of honest and sincere appreciation. Within this principle he describes the importance of ending our own thinking of accomplishments and desires. Instead, we must put our focus on the other person's good qualities. If being sincere, this will cause people to cherish them in their minds, even years later. The third principle involves influencing the other person to want, but not in a way that is manipulative. With this principle, he describes the importance of self-expression and connects it to the importance of thinking in terms of the other person, so that they come up with your ideas on their own, which they will like more.Within the second part of the book, it teaches six principles. The first describes how critical it is to become interested in other people because you will make more friends compared to having others interested in you. When he moves onto the second principle, he explains the importance to smile in a heartwarming way because it will brighten the lives of those who see it. Dale then describes the importance to recall a person's name in the third principle. He gives tips on how to remember and then explains how people enjoy the sound of their own name. The fourth principle is about being a good listener and encouraging those to talk about themselves. He then goes onto to explain again that people are more interested in talking about themselves instead of others. He further explains this point in principle five: Talk in terms of the other person's interests. The final step is to sincerely make the other person feel important because this is the "deepest urge in human nature."Dale describes in the third part of the book the steps to have a person think in terms of your own thoughts. He then explains that it is better to avoid arguments and to show respect for other people's opinions and never tell them they are wrong. because it will further push them away. If there is fault in your own behavior, Dale explains to immediately admit you're wrong without any doubts. If you are upset, he explains to sit down and counsel together, and if there are differences, understand it. Even in some differences, there will be points of agreement. He then explains the importance of agreement and having the person say "yes," at least twice. You doing this by looking into the other person's viewpoint and asking questions that cause them to agree. It is essential to have friends do the talking and have them excel us, instead of excelling them. When this occurs, they will feel important. To further the notion of feeling important, it is important to have the individual create their own ideas. He deepens this idea by asking questions such as, "Why should he or she want to do it?" and then being sympathetic towards their ideas. In order to catch a person's attention, you must dramatise the ideas you have. If all else fails, he explains the importance of competition and how it drives people to feel important and empowered to work efficiently and effectively.In the final part of the book, Dale again discusses the importance of beginning with praise and honest appreciation. When someone makes a mistake, call to their mistakes indirectly. This can be done my making their mistakes your own and explaining the importance of fixing it and why it gave you a disadvantage. He then explains the importance of asking questions that direct the person you’re speaking to, to obtain your idea on their own. He emphasizes the importance of having the person be saved from embarrassment, and then explains the importance of praise again, even if it is small. Dale then gives examples of giving a person a reputation that makes them better, in order to have the person be motivated to improve. After giving someone a reputation to live up to, encourage the person to correct their faults and make them happy to do the actions you suggest.

The heroine is beyond whiny! And the hero and the heroines parents kept being on the point of revealing something when someone walked in. If you use that once or even twice maybe but over and over again it was just obnoxious, especially because what they were about to reveal was obvious for a long time.

Cage of Deceit was entirely predictable with no surprises at all throughout. All the huge secrets were glaring from the beginning (as an avid read, I must admit I am rarely surprised) and I knew exactly what the prince was hiding as soon as we were introduced to him.Parts of the book were very frustrating. Parents who are supposed to be preparing their daughter to rule someday, who feel she is old enough to marry at 16, hide important parts of what they are doing so that she is totally unprepared when its time to make important sacrifices. The princess views herself as always acting like the "perfect princess" but based on the reactions of everyone around her anytime something was going on, it's safe to say that she had a totally unrealistic view of herself that was never examined. Supposed friends who don't really act like friends and the prince and his squire are both boorish (prince) or awful (squire), but propped up to be the ideal.With all that being said, I did enjoy reading the book. It was clean and the writing style was right up my alley. I would have liked for the supposed twists to not have been so easily spotted early on in the story, but I'm happy that the writing itself was descriptive without being overly so and the author told the story well enough.Overall, for younger readers the twists might be less obvious and I would feel quite comfortable with my young teens reading this novel.

Same old same old. As an avid reader of fantasy/adventure novels I found this to be another repeat of a common story line in this genre. Some of the writing is annoying as the terminology is just out of character for the world the author has built. Ho hum characters and an obvious plot don't add anything either.If you are new to the genre you will enjoy this book a lot more than an experienced reader. It is a cliff hanger (of sorts) so if you hate that tactic by authors give this one a miss. It is an obvious cliff hanger and not too illogical a point to stop at so treat it more like an episode and it probably won't worry you too much. The story moves along at a fairly fast pace so you can probably read this one in one sitting.

I seriously loved this book. Jennifer Anne Davis gave us a strong, an actually strong female MC with Allyssa. She was everything I wanted her to be and then some, she didn't take crap from anyone, she could hold her own in a fight and yet could walk in court and demand respect and the love of her people.And then there are the other characters... loved them all. No character really seemed like a side character because Jennifer Anne Davis took time to give each character a life and story.The story was great and had wonderful pacing. The surprise wasn't much of a surprise to me, but that didn't take away my excitement to see if I was right or not. And of course I was! Can't wait to read the next one. This is definitely a must read.

While this had a slow start (it took about 30% of the book to really get me invested), I ended up enjoying it. While the plot is predictable and an experienced reader can see the twists coming a mile away, the characters help push it towards being a good read. Allyssa, the heroine, is your typical 16-year-old "princess who wants to escape the palace confines physically and emotionally" and definitely comes across as whiney and entitled at first. However, her personality develops along with the plot and she is very likeable by the end of the book without being too perfect. The action could be written more smoothly, but the romance feels organic (for a YA novel, anyway) and the minor characters are fleshed out enough to be interesting. It does end on a cliff-hanger, but the first page of the introduction/author's note tells you that explicitly, so it's your own fault if you don't like where it stops. I'm definitely going to continue the series.

Cage of Deceit is a great start to the series. Allysa proves that she is a kick butt kind of Princess. She is loyal, kind and very brave! She just feels like she is in a cage being a Princess. She just wants to continue to sneak out with her best friend Gravick and catch thieves at night. She is nimble and good at it! She loves her parents and knows that she will marry someone for a political move but hopes that she will find the love her own parents had as well.When Prince Odar from Fren comes with his squire Jarvick to present a marriage contract with her so that the two kingdoms with be united to fight against the impending war from Russek, she finds him handsome but somewhat aloof! But the squire, Jarvick is impossible to deal with. They really dislike each other and I didn't think either would see any good in the other but feelings change.By the end of the book, Allysa has told lies and she has been given lies by so many her mind can't keep up with it all. But Allysa doesn't get all the information from everyone before she is off to Fren for Prince Odar's parents to accept her first. And as I am learning, the author loves to leave you hanging in the end. Thank goodness, I have an arc of the second book to quench my thirst for this amazing series!I love all the little hints of things, the inner workings of Allysa's mind. The book is totally in her third person POV. The book is fast paced and filled with action, a little romance, intrigue and politics.I have found another favorite author and can't wait to read more of her work. I have read another book of hers and knew she would be amazing and I'm glad I read this one too!!

But for more than 50 years, Syvia kept her experience to herself: "It was something nobody talked about." Roy didn't know, and she admits that she didn't want to know. She always avoided Holocaust history. She was afraid of it; when she was growing up, there was no Holocaust curriculum, no discussion-just those images of atrocity, piles of bones, and skeletal survivors being liberated. Her father, too, was a survivor, but he seldom spoke of those years, and with his death, his story was lost. But a few years ago, Roy's aunt began to talk about Lodz, and based on taped phone interviews, Roy wrote her story, presenting it from the first-person viewpoint of a child, Syvia, in simple, urgent free verse in the present tense. Each section begins with a brief historical introduction, and there is a detailed time line at the end of the book.Syvia is four years old in 1939, when the Germans invade Poland and start World War II. A few months later, her family is forced into the crowded Lodz ghetto, with more than a quarter of a million other Jews. At the end of the war, when Syvia is 10, only about 800 Jews remain-only 12 of them are children. Syvia remembers daily life: yellow stars, illness, starvation, freezing cold, and brutal abuse, with puddles of red blood everywhere, and the terrifying arbitrariness of events ("like the story of a boy / who went out for bread / and was shot by a guard / who didn't like the way the boy / looked at him"). I am a pretty slow reader and I bought this and downloaded it and read it while at work and was almost finished with itin 3 hours, finished it the next day!! I have read a few book on the Holocaust and this one was by far the easiest to read. I can not wrap my brain around what these people endured back then it is just inhumane to think that anyone could be so cruel and sinister! I have a friend and his mother is French and father Belgian and she has told us story of them having to escape France with their children so as not to get caught up in WW2 even though they were not Jewish. I think Hitler wanted to wipe out every race but his own!! So horrific! I hope we don't wipe the stories of the Holocaust out they way we seem to be wiping out all of the other History because it offends someone!!! It would be a tragedy for these truths to go untold!!! WE NEED TO LEARN FROM OUR HISTORY AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE AND NEVER REPEAT IT!!!!

Over 6 million people of Jewish descent were killed during what is now known as the Holocaust at the time of World War II. Of those 6 million, 1 million were children.In the Lodz ghetto of Poland, thousands of Jewish people were forced to live in an already burgeoning area. Of all the people sent there only 800 adults and 12 children survived.Author Jennifer Roy, who wrote the book, Yellow Star, tells life in the Lodz ghetto in first person narrative. Her aunt, Syvia Perlmutter (Rozines) now know as Sylvia was one of the 12 children to survive. She was 10 years old when the Russians liberated the area. This is her story told through her eyes as a young child.The book begins all chapters with a bit of history timeline for the area. The first chapters open the book as Syvia is just 4 year old and must move from their home to the Lodz ghetto. She speaks about her older sister, Dora and her parents. She adores all of them as they do her.The story moves along with each year of Syvia getting older and each year a hardship on her family. Syvia is too young to work and often is left alone or in hiding so as not to be captured and shipped off by the Nazi's.She speaks of people missing including her best friends to never return. She laments about her favorite doll being 'misplaced' knowing full well that the doll was sold in order for her family to eat. She never complains.In more than a harrowing time, she is forced to hide with her father in a dug out ditch in a graveyard to save herself from being killed. Another time, she is hidden in a cellar, right under the noses of the Nazi's, with the 11 other remaining children in the ghetto, which includes her baby cousin. There she faces illness and always near starvation.At a mere one day shy of her 10th birthday, Syvia had a brave streak and managed to wake her father who in turn awakened the entire community in order to save them from a mass bombing that the allies had begun on the ghetto.What saved them most? Their will to live, their tenacity and yes, believe it or not, their sewn yellow stars.-----------------This book I read in two hours. I simply could not put it down. Syvia's story must be told!It took her 50 years after the events to tell her niece, the author, her story but tell it she did.I applaud Mrs. Rozines' bravery once again to tell her painful story. Without these stories of those who survived such an atrocity of history, their names and legends would never be remembered. Worse yet, the history would be long forgotten and it should not be.This book well deserves the 5 stars I am giving it. In fact, it deserves much more. I encourage you to visit a Holocaust Museum in your area if there is one or if you are in the Washington DC area visit the National Holocaust Museum. I was fortunate to hear Sylvia Rozines speak at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum First Person 2015 Series. I was very moved by the experience and anxious to delve further into her story and read this book. I wasn't disappointed. The book is an easy read, as it is written in her voice as a child living these atrocities. It is not gory or graphic, but still well told and takes you through this dark, tragic piece of history. Mrs. Rozines made a point that stuck with me and made me feel all the more honored to get to see her and hear her speak - although she was a young girl when this happened to her, she was old enough to remember her story. Those younger can tell their family stories, but these are her own memories.

This book is full of information about the war and how the Jewish were treated. It is a very interesting, but harsh, story through a young girl`s eyes and feelings. It is short and easy to read.

What a moving story! When I first downloaded this book, I hadn't noticed it's on the middle grade level, but you know what? It didn't matter. The simplicity of the phrasing made it all the more powerful.What the author did by turning her aunt's real life story into a book that both records family history and educates children is just a gift all the way around. This book relives the horrors of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a child who suffered through it in the Lodz ghetto. Told in the first person, the reader can't help but feel what Syvia feels. It's a brilliant method of storytelling, and I think this book should be taught in schools alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. It's that powerful and that important. Never forget!
