Ethan Nichtern is a senior teacher in the Shambala Buddhist tradition and the author of The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path and One City: A Declaration of Interdependence. I couldn't put this book down, a real gem of contemporary relationship advice. I fell in love with The Princess Bride in college. It became one of those movies that my oldest friends still quote again and again. I have also been a huge fan of Ethan since I first saw him speak a couple of years ago. So when I heard that he was releasing a book about Buddhist Dharma and the Princess Bride, I immediately pre-ordered it.I was expecting a fun book with lots of references to one of my favorite films, and I definitely got that. What I wasn't expecting was for this to be a book that hit home so profoundly. The chapter "There Is No Buttercup" is the best articulation I have read on desire and suffering. It took something very theoretical and brought it home in the context of being single in New York City. This books is a MUST READ in you are DATING in NYC!

Ethan Nichtern's new book reveals a Metamodernist Buddhism I can wholeheartedly endorse!I've been a student of Buddhism (i.e., academic Comparative Religion/Psychology of Religious Experience) since the 60's. Recently a friend introduced me to Nichtern's "The Road Home," and I've been following his work ever since. This book's interplay of culture analysis, and timeless wisdom reveals a Buddhism I want to live, and well as study.

I found the book delightful to read and simply couldnt put it down. It was funny, tender, sweet and informative and very unique. Ive already passed it on to my 15 year old daughter who cant put it down either.

I was given the luck of getting to teach a behavior class to some of my Special Ed students. There was a general idea of what I need to teach, but no curriculum or resources whatsoever. This book has been a lifesaving Godsend. The lessons are organized in a logical order and deal with issues that are completely relevant to my elementary aged students with issues learning proper school behavior. I would like it if the lessons were a little more involved and longer lasting; but these lessons are a great starting point and help me organize how I will teach my class. I just find other lessons online to supplement the lessons in the book...or come up with my own ideas! I'm so happy I found this book!

I teach special ed middle school students. This is an excellent resource, very practical lesson and easily taught in 5-10 minutes. I like it much, much better than the school district's choice of Second Step (which puts the kids to sleep and they hate).

My son has high-functioning Aspergers and like all parents I want him to have all the skills necessary to succeed. With that being said, I reviewed a bunch of books, ordered them from the library and tried them out. This is the only one I liked so much I went out and purchased my own copy. It is perfect for ages 5 - 12 years with High functioning Aspergers. My five year old daughter loves it just because it is fun and made her think, my 8 year old son who has Aspergers had trouble with some things but others he got right away. Definitely a good learning book and works for both teachers and partents alike. Even young school age children without Special Needs would learn alot from this book.The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is a newer version of the book which I heard is even better and when I order that one, if I like it I will give it five stars.

Not crazy that it says for Special Children....but the activities and stories are great. I'm able to use the provided lesson for a quick social skills group and the kids enjoy them. They are super easy to change to fit the needs of individual students as well.

This book takes common sense & states the obvious. The material is not creative & the lessons are mostly in worksheet form, not 'activities' that are interactive. I have not used this book at all in my practice & felt it was a waste of my money.

I thought there was much more or less of Plans. I was disappointed that was not able to look what was inside to help make my decision in ordering. Because I would not of order this book for the needs I had. It wasted my money.

Love that these are easy to teach to my students!!!

So far this book has been excellent and exactly what we expected. Does a good job of leading and teaching important social skills that are difficult for some kids to learn naturally.

As a lover of history, I tend to have a rosy-tinted vision of life in the past. I get fatigued by modern twenty-first-century problems and enjoy reading fiction that takes me back to what seems like a gentler era. Anyone who knows me, knows that I like a pretty story.A Cup of Dust is not what you'd call a pretty story. Set in the Oklahoma Panhandle during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, it depicts in lyrical prose and excruciating detail the hardships of that time and that place. So, no, it's not a pretty story. But it's a GOOD story.From the moment we meet 10-year-old Pearl, daughter of the local sheriff, we see everything that happens through her eyes that don't miss a thing. Right alongside her, we learn about Hoovervilles and hoboes and FDR and jackrabbits. And dust. Oh, the dust. We see what people did when they were desperate with no food to feed their babies. How people in desperate straits can treat each other with the height of kindness and the depth of cruelty.In short, it's a bold depiction of a fallen world in need of a Savior. To be honest, I had to skim over certain parts of the story that were too raw and violent for me to take in. It took me a while to finish it, because I had to keep having to put it down and process what I'd read. But the hard passages seem honest, never gratuitous, and are balanced by occasional lighter moments that keep the story from unrelieved sorrow. And the well-crafted suspense kept drawing me back to find out what was going to happen next.A Cup of Dust was not a "fun" read, but it's a story that will stick with me for a good long while me and make me think. Once in a while, it's important to take off the rose-colored glasses and understand things for how they really were.

This writer transports readers back to the Great Depression; showing the hazards and hardships of a hopeful community fighting the dust bowl. The story is a haunting tale written in first person through the eyes of an adorable 10 year old girl named Pearl Spence who instantly stole my heart. I felt for her situation and appreciated her outlook on things. Pearl is compassionate, feisty and has wisdom beyond her years. She has a big sister that walked to the beat of her own drum. Pearl says, “Being a lady was just one of the laundry list of things my sister couldn’t figure out…Mama had told me Beanie was slow. Daddy called her simple. Folks…said she was an idiot. Meemaw said ”those folks didn’t understand and that people sometimes get mean over what they didn’t understand…It ain’t no use fighting them….one of these days they’ll figure out that we’ve got a miracle walking among us.”It was hard to escape their reality, Pearl says, “The dust got in no matter how hard we tried to keep it out. It worked its way into a crack here or a loose floorboard there. A hole in the roof or a gap in a windowsill. It always found a way in always won…Still, I couldn’t help but imagine that the dust was one big old whopping from the very hand of God….I wondered how good we’d all have to be to get God to stop being angry at us.”Meemaw told me, “Life has a way of taking what we know and tangling it all in knots. It ain’t gonna be easy on you to know the truth, never is. But you’re a brave girl. And your strong in the Lord.”“Every storm has a beginning and every storm has an end. They never last forever.” She whispered, “God is the one who saves. Don’t forget it…Before I knew it, I was hugging my new dress and crying hard because all the green had dried up and gone, never to come back again.…Desperate times called for desperate measures. For those who were unable to leave they did their best with what they had.”Pearl’s Mom and her Dad the Sheriff helped keep order in their community and helped people where they could. Pearl’s Mom and MeeMaw were strong women doing what they had to keep the faith and pass on food and love all the way.This is a well-crafted drama with a mystery in the mix. It involved a secret being forced to the surface. Not everyone handles a crisis in the same manner as Pearl and her family. Tough topics portrayed in this novel were those of spousal and child abuse, cruelty to animals and murder. This is not for the faint of heart. I’d rate it a PG 13.This is a thought-provoking, tender-hearted, emotional read I had to finish because I just had to know how things work out for Pearl and her family as they weathered the storm. This author became obsessed with what happened in the Great Depression and how the people dealt with the dust storms. She says, “After writing A Cup of Dust, I find that my admiration for the Dust Bowl survivors has grown. They were courageous, faithful, optimistic, and generous with what little they had. After all, who knew what the next year might bring. Cup of Dust is easily one of my favorite reads of 2016 so far. I’m confident it will remain on my favorites list through year’s end and beyond. I found so many things to love about this coming-of-age story. The author strikes the perfect balance between the grim reality that the Spence family faced during the Dust Bowl, and the hope that they could still find within each other and a better future.The first-person narration feels nearly perfect. I was immediately captured by Pearl Spence’s precocious and endearing voice. She is young, yet possesses a maturity that surpasses her years. Though the harshness of the Dust Bowl has forced Pearl to grow up in many ways, she is still a child, and her outlook matches that. Pearl’s narration brings freshness and balance to the harsh setting better than I could have imagined. Her naivety and moments of deep insight and clarity blend together in such a skillful way.The historical details are vivid, and Pearl’s memories of before the Dust Bowl bring the current state of affairs into sharp contrast. The struggles of everyday life, whether it’s keeping grit and dust out of your home, eyes and lungs, having enough food to eat, or feeling the constant worry of a sudden dust storm, are all described vividly. The secondary characters are as equally compelling. Pearl’s parents and grandmother are the pillars that hold up the family, yet Pearl is the glue that keeps them all in place. Their interactions together have such a realness and truthfulness to them. I was deeply moved by this family’s resiliency in the face of hard and dangerous times.The plot held my interest the entire time; some of the chapters reminded me of vignettes, in that they were snap shots of Pearl’s life and the life of her family. Everything was revealed in a way that felt in keeping with the rest of the story, and I had a keen sense of how Pearl spent her days. Though some might feel it was slow moving, I feel that the plot suited the story and the setting. While the action builds slowly, when it does reach its crescendo, the emotion that goes with it is deep and riveting.The menacing nature of the antagonist never feels cartoonish or unrealistic. It is truly one of those instances where it's a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” and Pearl is the only one that sees the wolf. It’s one of those moments that I had to pause for reflection, to really remember that everyone has a reason and rationale for the way they respond to life. In Pearl’s word, people have “scars on their hearts,” and it’s the way one chooses to respond that makes all the difference. Susie did an excellent job creating this malignant character, while allowing the reader to see the reasoning behind it.I haven’t read any of Susie Finkbeiner's books other than this one, but you can be sure that I will do so in the future. Any continuation of the Spence family story would be bumped to the top of my to-read list. A Cup of Dust was a complete joy to read. She did not write a feel good story, but rather created something heartbreaking and beautiful, and true. The ending doesn’t wrap things up neatly in a bow, but still left me with a profound hope. The story gave me a sense of admiration and respect for those who lived through one of history’s worst moments, and a deep appreciation for the real meaning of family and the unwavering, sacrificial love that goes with it. A Cup of Dust is historical fiction at its finest, and I highly recommend it.

You can't go wrong with this baby monitor system for the price. It rocks. The unit works well picking up transmission from outside my house, even on the far end of the home and level to level as well. The picture quality is great. The night vision is excellent. I don't really use the zoom function, but it works well to in the position the camera is set in. This unit does not pan. I will say that the temp seems to be inaccurate, but I don't really care. I'm sure that is due to the operating temperature of the unit it's attached to. Battery life is excellent. I have had mine for over 6 months using it all day and half the night, every day. You cannot plug the cameras into power strips or they will malfunction with sound transmission and loose signal easily. I learned this the hard way and thought my unit was damaged until I did a little investigating one weekend. I have another set and extra cameras. They are easy to pair. You can buy any similar units (look the same with a different brand name) and pair them all together. I have a set that says 'Smilism' and another set that says 'Baby Monitor' (with a heart shape). They work interchangeably, with no problem. The packaging looks exactly the same, just different brand name logos. I have also purchased extra cameras for about 35 bucks and they pair up just fine too. The max cameras for each unit is 4. No need to purchase $200 system. If you are on the fence, look no further, don't spend a ton of money. This unit gets the job done and it's the way to go.

After just a couple days the product is holding up. It feels pretty cheap in build quality so we will see how long it lasts but the picture quality is far above anything in a similar price range. There are pretty much no instructions but it comes ready to go out of the box paired with the camera and includes hardware to mount on the wall. The camera has a pretty wide angle lense so mounting it above a crib on the wall was pretty easy to do, it could also easily sit on a shelf slightly out of the way. The night vision is remarkably clear, it really looks just like daytime on the monitor screen when it is pitch dark in the room. Battery life on the monitor when not plugged in is a little short, about 3 hours with the screen on 100% of the time.Overall, this is worth a shot.UPDATE: Bought in December and it worked pretty darn good for 6 months, now without any warning at all the monitor portion just died and will not power up after only 6 months in use. Not sure what the warranty is, but I am probably not holding my breath.

Finally!!!! After trying two other monitors that used apps, I’ve found a good one!!! The other app required baby monitors kept kicking me out of them at night while trying to monitor my baby. This one worked fantastically all night long!! The Eco mode will also be nice if I can ever convince myself I don’t have to see my baby all night, but only when he makes noise. :) My only complaint so far is that it isn’t a wide angle lense and therefore I can only get his crib in view.

The picture is good for the price. The battery life is no good. You need to keep it plugged in all night or it will wake you at 4am with a dying battery beeping. So far so good.We especially like the speaker feature. This is in our boys room downstairs and we can use it to talk to them to tell them to be quiet or go to bed. Also when our 3 year old wakes up in the night we use the music feature to lull him back to sleep.

There were a few baby items, such as the baby monitor, that I spent entirely too long researching. We are talking hours on the internet scouring comparison charts, reading baby monitor reviews, making pros/cons lists, etc. I found it surprisingly hard to find advice from a real mom that was straight to the point. Hopefully, I can save you from this torturous process by recommending you the Babebey monitor.Since our baby boy hasn’t arrived yet, I’ve been doing a lot of preliminary tests setting the camera on our cat’s favorite spots when we leave the house (RIP to Timi’s privacy).In order to get the best angle of the crib I also bought a corner shelf to work with the monitor. Screen display is clear. Motion detection works flawlessly! Its infrared LED activates immediately when the light’s out, and it is also very clear.The cameras are super portable. Since the cameras are small, light-weight boxes you can easily unplug them and move them to a new location. We don’t need to worry about not having a plan for grandma’s house or even a hotel stay.Trust me, I do not usually get this excited about technology. But the Babebay camera has impressed me so much that I’ve already purchased another one and have sung its praises to anyone who will listen. Save yourself the headache and hundreds of dollars and pick Babebay for your baby monitor.

About six months ago we were gifted this baby monitor by a close friend, it's been very very useful. The battery is quite good, the picture is pretty clear. The connection range was impressively far and just, in general, I have not had problems with this baby camera. Now we bought another as a gift for a friends baby shower since it was such a good gift for us.

Really good quality video and sound, works well in different areas across the house. Definitely recommend this product, arrived on time and really good quality, very good value for money.

Go ahead and buy this. Like, go ahead. You will not find a better deal. This monitor has been a lifesaver. The best part is the two way communication. I can comfort my baby with my voice, instead of going in her room. Seeing me would upset her, so I am thankful for this feature. I utilize the lullaby feature to calm her down sometimes as well. The image is pretty good, and the night vision is clear. I leave mine plugged up overnight, but the battery would last 8 hours even if I didn't. The baby unit comes with a mount, which I haven't done yet, but looks easy. I have no complaints. Some people have mentioned the screen whites out. Mine has done that maybe three times, and those 1.5 seconds of white screen don't make a big difference to me. Like I said, buy this.

it did not tell me a lot of things that mob is supposed to do. two of my daughters friends already got married and there are some new things mob is expected to do not listed in the book which was why I bought the book to prep me on things I was supposed to do

Very helpful guide for modern day wedding trends and traditions.

i was hoping for some solutions to problems that come up with planning a wedding with a family you don't really know. instead, all the advice there was was to put on a happy face, solve anything that comes up and give in to anybody that may cause a problem. i get that as the mother of the bride, you need to work with others and compromise. but, there was nothing here to help actually plan anything. i can't believe how many parties and invitations this author thinks you need to have after your daughter gets engaged. it's like we are back in the 1800s and have a coming out ball, engagement parties, teas, etc. maybe if you are high society and have 24 hours a day to plan and participate in parties, that would be great. but we are having a simple reception.
