From Booklist

Kenneally (Stealing Parker, 2012) again looks at sports through a female lens, this time tackling male-dominated horse racing, in this fourth Hundred Oaks novel. Savannah, her widowed horse-trainer father, and her father’s pregnant girlfriend move to Tennessee’s Cedar Hill, a farm that trains horses for races including the Kentucky Derby. When the teen notices that she is the only one who can control Star, a horse that bucks all riders, she seizes the chance to realize her dream of becoming a jockey. But placing herself in this potentially deadly sport is not Savannah’s only danger. There’s also her instant attraction to Jack Goodwin, the farm owner’s cocky, flirtatious son. Savannah decides she wants more than “friends with benefits” (even if she can’t stop thinking about those skin-to-skin benefits), but wonders if she will always be considered “the help” in Jack’s world of privilege. The author’s knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner’s circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans. Review

""Kenneally's equestrian-themed romance is energized by another winning heroine . . . Kenneally's story about considering the importance of one's own happiness should appeal to a wide audience; despite some bumps in the road, there's never any doubt that all will end well."" - Publishers Weekly""Kenneally has established herself as a writer of romances with some interesting complexity along with the swooning, and there's certainly plenty of swooning and steamy pleasure here. Additionally, Savannah herself is genuinely brash and not just saucy, and the Tennessee milieu is vividly evoked." " - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books ""The author's knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner's circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans." Heartwarming, fun, and with characters that I felt to know and regard almost like old friends, Racing Savannah was a book I read in literally two nights. I had never read a romance that takes place in a horse-racing backdrop, and I found myself enjoying learning the ins and outs of horse racing almost as much as I enjoyed seeing Savannah and Jack's relationship develop as the story progressed. One thing I love about this author is that she portrays people realistically. Most people in the story, just like most people in the real world, are a mixed bag - and yes, there are exceptions like the creepy son of one of the horse owners. Overall though, Racing Savannah succeeds not just with the main protagonists' relationship but also the side characters which Kenneally puts in to enrich the story. Oh, and any story about a badass girl jockey falling in love is just hard not to love...so I'm giving it 5 stars.

~~~Review posted on The Heart of a Book Blogger~~~I decided to reread Racing Savannah, an old favorite, after being in a reading slump for a couple of weeks. I really do love Savannah and her passion for horses and eventually jockeying. And oh man does Jack make me swoon! I love their relationship and the Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs vibes as Savannah and Jack try to navigate their feelings. This is definitely a must read if you like sport romances!
Racing Savannah was such a great young adult novel. It was the second book in my Miranda Kenneally-binge last weekend and I enjoyed it just as much as the one before. This time it's all about a working class girl and a rich guy – and the girl and her dad just happen to work for the rich guy and his family.Savannah and Jack were both great, relatable characters. I loved them both, but Savannah came out on top as far as I'm concerned. She was wonderful. I loved her drive and her heart. She was wonderful with animals and her relationship with one of the most difficult horses at Jack's family's farm was something truly special... just like Savannah's character. Jack was a good guy in a tough spot. His father had given him a chance to run their horse farm, but he wasn't an easy guy to please. One of his father's strictest rules was "don't date the staff." I think we all know that one was doomed to be broken. Jack wasn't all swoony all the time, but he won me over when it was all said and done.Savannah and Jack had their issues – most coming because of the differences in their backgrounds and upbringing – but I still thought the romance was sweet and had a ton of heart. I loved watching both characters grow as a result of their time together, too. Despite their differences, they made a fantastic pair. It was a bumpy road, but it was also a real one.Racing Savannah takes place a few years after the first few books in the series and there was a fantastic scene a little more than halfway through the book in which we were treated to an AMAZING checkin with some of the earlier characters in the series. It totally melted my heart. I mean, big time cheesy smiles for pages and pages. I get a huge grin on my face just thinking about it! <3I love the Hundred Oaks series. I love how real and honest it is, and how Ms. Kenneally isn't afraid to tackle tough subjects in the books. These books touch on everything from sexism to religion and abortion to the "war" between the classes. They feature characters its impossible not to fall for and a storyline I just can't get enough of. I love the friendships and the romance. They're truly the total package. If you're not reading this series, you should be.
Honestly, my initial reaction upon writing this review for Racing Savannah is to want to kick myself in the butt for not reading this one when it released last year. I liked Catching Jordan, Kenneally’s debut novel, but my love for her series was cemented with Stealing Parker and fortified by Things I Can’t Forget. So, knowing I really liked her writing, I should have seized the opportunity and read Racing Savannah when it was in my hands months ago.Racing Savannah is considered another companion novel in the Hundred Oaks series. But really, it feels more like a new beginning, as readers are introduced to a new generation of characters to fall in love with. I love the familiarity of the community, but also enjoy the newness offered by these fun new people!But first, let’s focus on the one element that I loved about this book – the horses! I’ve been obsessed with the idea of horses and horseback riding since I was a little girl. (Relevant sidebar: I was a major fan of the Saddle Club books. Holler if you were too.) Though I’ve only really been riding a couple of times, it’s always been a really fun experience that I want to repeat!Ahem, okay, back to reviewing now.The story still evokes the Kenneally books of the past, focusing heavily on one character’s personal journey, and her relationships – familial, friendly & romantic. Savannah is our narrator – and she’s a really likable one, too! She’s really a typical teenager, albeit one with a strong interest in horses. Her struggles to give herself the best possible chance at a future (especially after recognizing her father’s financial difficulties), her genuine love for horses (from riding them to caring for them) and her willingness to do things for the people she cared about really won her major points with me. I liked that she made the best of her situation, and also happened to be pretty smart and downright funny at times.As mentioned, many of Savannah’s relationships become important parts of this novel. She is very close to her father, who is afraid to lose Savannah after losing his wife. She starts out not really caring about her stepmother-to-be, but still willing to do anything for her and the baby she’s carrying. She becomes friends with Rory, a groom at the stables her father works at (and little brother to a guy named Will *winks*) and Vanessa, a surprisingly down-to-earth rich girl. She also has a pretty good repartee with the stable hands, grooms and exercise trainers, and even with the family that owns the stables.And then there’s Jack. He is a rich boy, determined to prove to his father that he can capably manage their family business – their stables + horses. Jack’s known nothing but privilege all his life, but it’s pretty endearing to see how dedicated he is to making sure he handles business well. There were times when I wanted to tear his eyes out for the things he said or the way he acted, but there were also times that I wanted to hug him. In the end, he turns out to be a guy worth rooting for, that’s for sure.There are a few things that really surprised me about Racing Savannah – and again, in the best way:Sex: I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Kenneally didn’t shy away from things of a sexual nature. The reality is that many teenagers are sexually active – and that’s their choice to make. I really appreciated that Kenneally treated it as a part of regular life; it’s an excellent attitude to have.Social class: This is obviously one of the bigger issues in this novel, as Jack is rich and Savannah is, well, not-so-rich. Seeing how their realities, despite an overlap when it came to working with horses, were so different was pretty startling. I sometimes forget that extremes like this do exist, and I think Kenneally did admirably in painting a picture that seemed pretty unbiased (and didn’t attack one class for particular qualities).College & the future: One of the things many teens struggle to figure out is what they want for their future, and what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Kenneally depicts two situations here. Jack is set to run the family business, and wants to. Savannah assumes she’ll go straight from high school to working around horses. It’s interesting to see how both situations play out for them, especially Savannah’s, and I really think it felt realistic.Racing Savannah was the perfect read to get back in the saddle with the Kenneally series. (See what I did there?) Really, it’s got the signature charm of the first three in the series, due to an irresistible combination of characters (including appearances of all of my old favorites) + setting + story. It was a stellar addition to the Hundred Oaks collection, and a very solid contemporary read all in all.
A Course Called Scotland: Searching the Home of Golf for the Secret to Its Game, by Tom Coyne
Review
“One of the best golf books this century.” —Golf Digest “Tom Coyne has a knack for setting impossible tasks for himself. . . . Mr. Coyne is back at it again with A Course Called Scotland. This time he avails himself of cars, planes, and ferries, but the task he sets is no less preposterous: to play 107 courses in 56 days. . . . Readers who enjoyed Mr. Coyne’s rollicking Irish book will be interested to learn how their fearless travel guide has fared in the intervening years. . . . There’s no less wit in the writing—British weather forecasts, he concludes, are ‘as useful as ashtrays on motorbikes’—and almost as many well-rendered characters, both locals he meets and friends and readers who join him along the way. . . . All the famous courses are here: St. Andrews, Dornoch, Turnberry, Carnoustie. But even seasoned golf travelers will be unfamiliar with many of the courses Mr. Coyne finds. He tees it up where nature carved holes that no architect would dream of, where 12 holes instead of 18 suit the members just fine, and where munching sheep, not mowers, keep the fairway grass short. Does he discover the secret to the game? He finds several, including, most practically, ‘never, ever give up.’ ” —John Paul Newport, The Wall Street Journal “They said it couldn’t be done—that he’d never be able to top Ireland. But with Scotland, he did it. Damn you, Tom Coyne!” —Michael Bamberger, author of Men in Green “A fast-moving, insightful, often funny travelogue encompassing the width of much of the British Isles . . . One of the reasons A Course Called Scotland works so well is because Coyne extended an offhanded invitation to listeners of a radio show to join him in Scotland. . . . The eclectic cast of characters who pop up throughout the story underscore the deep connections forged through travel.” —Golfweek “Coyne has a wonderful way of making the reader feel a part of the quest. You experience his trials and tribulations as well as the sense of wonder and awe that comes with playing golf in Scotland.” —Chicago Tribune “There is a purity in the Scots’ game that isn’t about manicured greens or a ball’s ‘spin rate.’ Coyne admires their ‘homemade’ swings that merely focus on getting the golf ball around the course and in the hole. He becomes convinced that perfection is an illusion, though a powerful one. He slowly accepts his limitations, one day at a time, swing after swing.” —Bloomberg “Tom Coyne’s much-anticipated follow-up to his fun book A Course Called Ireland lived up to my high expectations. Who wouldn’t be jealous of Coyne’s adventures getting to play every links in Scotland? He mixes well his commentary on the courses with the historical significance of each place he visits. This is a must-read.” —Golf Advisor “The author entertains us with accounts of foul weather, fair friends (one of whom got hit in the face with a drive), and astonishing courses, some dating back centuries. . . . Golfers and golf-o-philes will gobble this down.” —Kirkus Reviews “In this witty and charming follow-up to A Course Called Ireland, Coyne continues living a golfer’s dream by playing every links course in Scotland, golf’s birthplace. . . . Enthusiasts will revel in Coyne’s eloquent narration of his course-by-course adventures, while casual fans might be tempted to pick up their clubs a little more often.” —Publishers Weekly “Fighting through physical exhaustion, self-doubt, homesickness and spates of nasty weather, Coyne knocks out 111 full or partial rounds on 107 courses, sometimes three rounds a day, in his search for the ‘secret’ of great golf. It’s no secret that his passion for the game (and life) shows through on every page, and we get to follow his every step through modern golf’s birthplace.”  —Golf Tips Magazine “News of a new tale by Tom Coyne is always reason to celebrate—assuming you love golf, irresistible storytelling, a cast of colorful characters and a poignant journey through the birthplace of the game. Lots of us share Tom’s Mitty-dream of running away to the great links lands and the lesser known coastal gems of Scotland. But he’s masterfully accomplished the feat with his charming pilgrimage around the game’s Holy Land that unfolds as smoothly as a fine single malt. Coyne's trademark wit, humor, unerring ear for the locals, and deep knowledge of the game are on full display, rendering this a poetic journey you won’t soon forget.”  —James Dodson, author of Final Rounds Praise for A Course Called Ireland "There is no golf trip like an Irish golf trip, and Tom Coyne has risen to meet that road. I look forward to reading this again. Pack it with your sticks."   —Bill Murray  "Equal parts touching, wry, and hilarious."  —The New York Times  "Witty and winning . . . A joy from start to finish."  —The Wall Street Journal  "Like the country itself, Coyne's book is an affable ramble through a charmed land."  —Chicago Tribune  "A Course Called Ireland explores the history of the land being traveled and pauses for tales both tall and short, as well as, in this case, for pub songs. Coyne finds plenty of all of the above from Kilkee to Kerry, the long way. Golfers reading this book may wish they'd been walking by Coyne's side."  —Boston Globe  "A delightful and fun book."  —Minneapolis Star-Tribune  "A really good read."  —The Modesto Bee
Years ago, after I read A Course Called Ireland, Tom Coyne became the only author in my well traveled path down hundreds of tomes of non-fiction and fiction literature that I ever tracked down to say...wow! I loved this!As is true of Tom’s other books, his new release, A Course Called Scotland is about more than just golf. This man knows his words, when to choose them and then where to put them in a sentence - seamlessly and unforced. Frankly, I think he could write about the internecine battle between the pansy and the primrose for garden supremacy and make it interesting.A Course Called Scotland is not a murder mystery nor does it contain passages of lurid sex. It is about a man, his state of mind, and a game that continually screws with it...despite all his other talents, Tom, on occasion, has had to struggle with his own demons, but hey, who hasn’t? (He manages to slay at least one by book’s end).In addition to being a consummate wordsmith, Tom has great respect for the game, its history and traditions; he not only has “game” himself, but a helluva lot of stamina, to boot (on many fronts). Different people look for different things in a book about a guy trying to discover if the secret to his life and the secret of golf are somehow intertwined...while simultaneously trying to qualify for The Open Championship - all I know is that you will not be sorry if you get this one and give it a whirl. Two (2) thumbs up.
What a blast! Tom Coyne's crazy golf travels are back, with a journey even more epic/insane than Ireland. His ability to describe the courses of Scotland is only surpassed by the humor he relates through he and his friends' travels along the way. More than just a golf book, I felt this to be an amazing tale of the human condition as Tom conquers much more than 111 courses in 57 days, which in and of itself should be enough. Can't wait to read again and see what "Course" comes next!
I really enjoyed reading Tom Coyne's book, "A Course Called Ireland", and didn't expect that he'd be able to surpass it...Boy, was I ever wrong! "A Course Called Scotland" features a person I would much rather play golf and hang out with, versus the "Old Tom Coyne" from his Irish adventure.I absolutely love how Tom connected with his family, friends, fans and readers before, during, and after this latest journey; he is truly one of the most accessible authors I've ever seen.Just as impressive, Tom Coyne articulates his growth as a golfer with genuine emotion, painting beautiful word pictures. This book resonated with me on every page, and got me even more excited to play golf in Scotland next month!This is an amazing story...If you have a love for our game, you'll be even more enamored as you join Tom Coyne on this voyage of discovery!
Tom Coyne's previous book, "A Course Called Ireland" is one of my all-time favorite books. I've probably read it a dozen times.When I heard he was doing a new book, this time about Scotland, I thought it couldn't be done. Nothing could live up to that previous book.Was I wrong. A Course Called Scotland is incredible. I'd give it six stars if possible.My wife - who is not an avid golf fan - puts it best: Tom Coyne's books are great because they're not about golf: they're about people.Coyne introduces a new character in Scotland, and the book is an epic odyssey that will have you packing your bags for the highlands.
This is a GREAT golf book. If you have any interest in the game, especially how it is played in Scotland, this is a must read. But it is so much more. Whether you are obsessed with golf or have never held a club in your hand, I recommend “A Course Called Scotland.”Nearly ten years ago, I received a book as a gift that changed my perspective on the game of golf. I loved playing the game, but knew little of its origins and how differently the game is played on true links courses. I thoroughly enjoy reading in “A Course Called Ireland” how golf is played in that part of the world, but I was also introduced to Tom Coyne’s view on that island – its people, its politics, its walkability, and its history (and its golf). Really, I was introduced to one man’s love of Ireland and this beautiful, frustrating game.Now, in what can be called a sequel, we are able to enjoy yet another great golf book, but also another great love story. “A Course Called Scotland” is about love of a game and its origins, but also love of family and friends, love of an attitude and way of life that exists in a nation roughly the size of the state of Maine, love of landscape created by nature rather than heavy machinery, and at the end of the day (or an insane two month journey) love of life itself.I received a 100% satisfaction rating from people I recommended “A Course Called Ireland”; family and friends that are golfers and non-golfers found it informative and entertaining. I believe “A Course Called Scotland” is both of those, but is also a window into the soul of the game and an imperfect man – a man who is full of faults but also full of love and a desire to better himself. As you turn the pages, you are there with the author fighting exhaustion, the unexpected, and self-doubt during this journey – not just in Scotland, but during all our days. This book will teach you, make you laugh, move you, and maybe make you dream of a better life on and off the course. You’ll be glad you read it on your journey.
“An exquisitely delicate, distinctive and inspiring story that will leave your heart undone, open to the beauty of the little things in life.” (Elle (Spain))“This charming and intelligent debut novel is certain to be a hit.” (Library Journal, Starred Review)“The Awakening of Miss Prim is a beautifully written novel. Its characters are brought to life so eloquently, and the blossoming of Miss Prim is so complete: she learns the value in life and love that has been lost in our modern-day hustle. An exquisite book and a joy to read.” (Deborah Rodriguez New York Times bestselling author of The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul)"A heart-warming and sweet story of small-town life and self-discovery.” (Vanessa Greene author of The Vintage Teacup Club)“The Awakening of Miss Prim reminds me of The Elegance of the Hedgehog.” (Pippa Wright author of The Foster Husband)“Readers who loved Joanne Harris's Chocolat, Jessica Brockmole's Letters from Skye or Gabrielle Zevin's The Collected Works of AJ Fikry will be charmed by the blossoming of Miss Prim. Already a bestseller in Europe, this charming and intelligent debut novel is certain to be a hit with book groups. Highly recommended.” (US Library Journal)"Written with intelligence, grace, and style." (Authorexposure.com)“A captivating story…The Awakening of Miss Prim is an intelligent read that’s more than a little out of the box.” (Writenotereviews.com)“This book is about…a myriad of things, such as romance, beauty, literature, art, philosophy, and even feminism. But I think that what I love about this book is not so much as the theme, but the fact that it interrogates and questions your beliefs and principles. As readers, we are put into the shoes of Miss Prim as we are slowly being questioned, dismantled, laid bare, and finally awakened to one of the things that we seek in life, and that is beauty.” (Bibliophile’s Reverie, blog review)“Exactly the kind of story I adore…. There’s a wealth of character development and depth. A variety of topics are explored – religion, philosophy, there’s even a debate on the merits of Mr. Darcy…. I loved every minute.” (The Pretty Good Gatsby, blog review)
“This is a strange place, full of very odd people,” Miss Prudencia Prim says about San Ireneo and its inhabitants. Miss Prim arrives in San Ireneo in response to a help wanted ad for a librarian, “Preferably without work experience. Graduates and Postgraduates need not apply.” Though she is sorely overqualified, she persuades The Man in the Wing Chair to give her the job. Miss Prim seems well-rounded, smart and educated, but when she encounters The Man in the Wing Chair and the characters of the village, her world view is shaken by theirs, but can’t seem to write them off as unreasonable or win an argument. She is an intellectually stiff woman, dedicated to a secular life, thinking the role of librarian might be a nice change of pace from the busy life she had in the city. But she isn’t prepared for the uncommon household, or uncommon employer, known only to the reader as The Man in the Wing Chair.As with most every book I read, it takes me a few pages or chapters to acclimate to the writing style, until I don’t notice it anymore and the story starts to pop.Strangely enough, though I regularly translate first-person experiences into third person objective accounts of travel adventures, in this book, the third-person, subjective POV seemed a little off-putting and stilted at first, but maybe that’s because it was translated from Spanish?The arguments between the characters seem a little forced, the conversations about certain subjects too deliberate and informational to seem natural.Of course, like many books painting a picture of a world view and its opponents, this book could have been over in 20 pages if the Miss Prim would have had the guts to stay in a conversation without walking out in a huff every time she felt insulted. But then, we would miss the opportunity to walk through the delightful village of San Ireneo and meet all the key characters.The story and writing were adequate, the quotes and propositions the book propounded were of the most superb, enjoyable breath of fresh air I’ve read in a long time. For example, the member of the Feminist’s League had this quote from G. K. Chesterton above her fireplace: Ten thousand women marched through the streets of London saying: “We will not be dictated to,” and then went off to become stenographers. The village is full of feminists who weren’t angry or stifled, men whose faith, principles and commitments didn’t disintegrate at the sign of a beautiful woman’s affections but with backgrounds entrenched with reality of love, loss, pasts and misunderstandings.  What the author presents are what looks on the face of things, like old, outdated, antiquated ideas, presented in a refreshing light, albeit, an unsubtle light. When Miss Prim eventually stays for a conversation or explanation, the conversation usually involves, “I’m surprised at you …” or “You are young and wouldn’t understand …” somewhat elementary techniques for exposition. The book is full of characters that go against the grain of the rush of the world, slow down and mean what they say, live what they believe in a way that is so counter-cultural, that it probably will leave a bad taste in many people mouths. In the end, the book knocks down the proposition that romantic love conquers all, that romantic love, when kindled, should be indulged despite all else, despite faith, despite other commitments, despite reason itself. Within The Man in the Wing Chair's char action the book presents faith as something to run to when all else fails, something better, stronger and more valuable than even romantic love. And that is a breath of fresh air that I laud over and above all the tiny flaws of this book. It gives the story depth, something to stick in my mind, to think about, to reflect on. It does not feed that shallow sugary addiction to easy and uncomplicated pictures of love portrayed in so many contemporary novels. It broke the rules of popular fiction, but is a international best seller and for this, Miss Fenollera deserves kudos.Â
Combining the social critiques of Jane Austen with the sensibilities of G.K. Chesterton, The Awakening of Miss Prim is one of the most unique novels in modern contemporary fiction. Celebrating tradition as a panacea to modern ills and strongly asserting the value of religion in secular society, this novel offers an essential alternative perspective in the current "culture wars," especially as it comes from a female perspective. While suffering from certain defects easily attributable to translation and Fenollera's status a debut author, the work as a whole is a charmingly realized and inherently valuable depiction of the present with a fascinating vision for the future.In The Awakening of Miss Prim, the titular young lady is shown to be the very image of the modern, successful woman who is not satisfied with life. Already smitten with a nostalgic view of the "delicacy" of the past, she is willing to start a new life in the romantic little hamlet of San Ireneo. When confronted with the extremely traditionalist denizens of the town, however, Prim is forced to confront the central and most interesting tenet of the novel: to what extent can one extricate the beauty and stability of tradition from its mores and values?In answering this question Fenollera is not afraid to attack directly and aggressively modern notions of progress. Here, to some extent, the novel falters. Arguments for tradition and old world values appear unanswerable, while halfhearted defenses of modernity and progress are easily cast aside. Perhaps this was Fenollera's intention, but the result is a novel that seems to sing too eagerly for the choir, but considering that most contemporary fiction (especially "women's" contemporary fiction) has embraced progressive liberalism in toto, an extreme reaction in the other direction may be justified. The novel also suffers from occasional bouts of poor and inconsistent diction, especially in regards to characterization, but this might very well be a result of translation.I would recommend The Awakening of Miss Prim to fans of Austen, the Bronte Sisters, and the apologists of the 19th and early 20th century. General fans of cerebral contemporary fiction might also appreciate a very unique, if somewhat polemical, perspective.
This is a book that is challenging the thinking (or lack of thinking!) in our modern times. People complained that certain elements of the book were contrived; and that's probably true. But the author is trying to achieve something great, to really get the reader to question things that are taken for granted in our times. To me, it's worth the effort to read the book, and several parts were very spiritual in a profound way. People complained the heroine isn't likeable. Well, if you are a flawed person, this won't bother you:) The heroine reminded me of Jane Austen's Emma. She means well, but she's got a lot of growing to do. Give this book a chance and an open mind. It's asking vital questions....I will definitely read it again.
Easy to read book with attempt of deeper psychological, sociological and philosophical insight. Yet, it lacks some depth of the characters and description of the whole society (as it comes to one French village) is rather shallow, lacking wider connections and reality. Since it is the debut novel of Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera, she`s still got a lot of ground to improve. I`ve felt quite some influence of Prde and Prejudice in this book, which by itself makes the book quite antagonistic. Nevertheless, I`d say this is rather nice feminine book to kill two or three fternoons.
The paperback version of this book is the international version. It is not the same version as Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) and in my opinion should not be listed on the same page for purchasing. If you are purchasing this book for a class based out of the USA the page numbers will NOT match up and possibly even more differences. It is only $10-20 more for the hardcover edition, save yourself some heartache and spend the money for the correct edition. There is no paperback version of Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition).My 3 stars is for the listing not the book. Book is great.
BEWARE: If you are buying this book used, there are some out there that are just cheap illegal photocopies of the original. You won't know it just by glancing at the book cover, but if you compare it to an original authorized copy, you can truly see (and smell!) the difference. The photocopied version smells of toxic ink (very difficult to read and study the content with the awful smell), the paper is thinner, and the graphics are obviously photocopied. See pictures for comparison. I suggest contacting the seller first to make sure the version that they are selling is a legal authorized copy--a few sellers of used copies that I have asked here mysteriously "sold" theirs and removed their listing (or resubmitted their listing under a new seller name) after receiving my email inquiring as to the legitimacy of their copy.ETA: the book itself is great; getting a photocopied copy is not.
The book has the information I need, however, when I put in the ISBN for the version I needed (not the New International Addition) this book is one of the options. As a graduate student, I am looking to save money which is why I went with the paperback versus the other more expensive option. The fact that it is an adaptation is in very small letters, so please read the fine print. Also, I wanted to return it, once I saw the discrepancy, but my return time had run out. I am not happy with this product or purchase.
Got this book for classes, its the same edition as the hardcover, yet for some reason its arranged completely differently than the hard cover. Its also missing the condensed list of concept checks with their coinciding page locations. It's also a bit annoying because you have to flip throughout the entire book to complete a concept check. If your getting this for self study, you'll be fine. But if your purchasing this book for a class that relies heavily on the use of the book, then you might be better off buying the hardcover.
This book is exactly the same as the US edition content wise. I compared the 2. There are no missing chapters. The differences are the cover picture, it is not printed on glossy paper, the glossary is in the front of the book, there is no preface or forward and there is no condensed list of the BA Task List with where to find each concept in the book (each is outlined in the beginning of each chapter). Saved me a lot of money!
Exactly what I need for school, for prepping for my BACB exam, for going back to reference at any time. If you are currently on track to the being a BCBA or BCaBA this book is your lifeline. I know this is one book I will be keeping in my professional library from now until forever. If you're new to the field you will soon find out why this book is your new best friend. Make sure you get this book and keep loving it as you move through your courses. You may only need it for one or two classes, but it is a huge asset as you prepare to sit for your exam
I bought this book for my graduate program, however, it is a book I will undoubtedly use throughout my career. Within a month of having this book the binding has completely broken. None of the pages are bound together anymore. A lot of the pages in the book are photocopied, and some pages aren't even printed into the book. Do not buy this book from GreatMove Books!
My co-workers tell me I have to have this book to take the board exam. I personally think it is complicated to understand, does not offer many examples or exercises. I like much better my other ABA book. But I bought it because the board exam is supposed to be based on this book.
Sunrise Canyon: The New Americana Series Book 1 is by Janet Dailey. This fast-paced book is set on a ranch outside of Tucson, Arizona. The ranch is run by Dusty and his great-niece, Kira. The two of them run a horse therapy program for troubled youths. The youths stay at the ranch and learn how to control their anger, handle stress, find self-confidence, and learn to get along with others as they learn to handle and ride horses. They take complete care of their horses, including mucking stalls, before they earn the privilege of riding the horses. Along with work, lectures, programs, and campfires, they have one-on-one counseling with Kira. So far, the program is only for those whose parents can afford it; but Kira hopes to get grants to cover those who have limited income. At the same time, Kira is raising her cousin Wendy’s daughter, Paige. Wendy died in a car accident when Paige was still very little. Her husband, Jake, had been in Afghanistan at the time. While on leave, he was so shocked that he barely registered that Kira said she would take care of Paige. By the time Jake was finally released from the Army, he realized he was in no condition to see Paige. He was in and out of the VA for treatment for PTSD. He decided his best bet was to stay alone and work wherever he found work and move on when things got rough. He did refrain from committing suicide by remembering his friends who had died. He just couldn’t take a cowardly way out. So, he continued to ramble.Dusty had hired a private investigator to find Jake. He knew Paige needed her father and he surmised that Jake needed them. When Jake ended up in jail, Dusty made the long trip to pay his fine and get him out of jail. He then offered Jake a job on the ranch. With the understanding it was only until he had worked off the fine money, Jake agreed. He then found himself facing not only Kira and Paige but also his own fears and monsters.Can a war-weary veteran who had severe PTSD problems find help on a ranch with an old man, a little girl, his wife’s cousin, and seven troubled teens? What can possibly go wrong?
I have missed my favorite author, Janet Dailey; so, of course I had to read Sunrise Canyon.This story was so timely and well written. Miss Janet, you hit one "outta the ballpark" ! For those of you who wonder what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is and it's effects on those who experience it's sudden onset -- triggered by sounds, events or even by casual remarks -- PTSD is as individual as each person who has been devastated by tragic events.There are many programs and therapeutic approaches, but we have far too many returning Veterans who need help to return to confidant, connected lives.Remember -- this is NOT limited to military personnel. Fire Dept. Personnel, Peace/Police Officers, and others in high-stress occupations which arise in medical first/emergency responders.Crafting a story in a therapeutic program designed for young people and weaving in her adult veteran's response to events which trigger his flashbacks to horrific battlefield memories -- Janet Dailey managed to integrate the two age groups with compassion and to avoid gratuitous violence. Bravo, Janet !Child advocacy and shining a light on PTSD -- I'll not forget your focus.
This book has Janet Dailey almost back to her old self. This was one of the better books from what she has churned out lately. She was writing like she used to write. Such a pity Janet Dailey died last year. This was the usual story boy meets girl and they fall in love. Then something happens to throw a spanner in the works. It all works out in the end. Buy it and read it, you won't be sorry
I really enjoyed this book it was very well developed and had a wealth of information about the trials of our returning soldiers....The insight was well worth reading about . I am so glad I read this book.
A very intriguing story which focuses on two issues faced by members of today's society, our youth and our dedicated veterans. This mixed with an interesting array of characters and the lovely surroundings made for an enjoyable read.
A beautiful setting for a beautiful story. So much has been written and done to help troubled teens and returning soldiers with anger and trust issues. PTSD doesn't only affect soldiers but also people that have been thru traumatic situations. This book looked at both .
Have been reading Janet Dailey's books since Fire and icle was publisam enjoying the new series a lot as is my daughter
It was a very year jerk. Story but loved it. I just love Janet Dailey writing.i have been a fan of her for years
