The differences between GAAP and GAAP with application of FASB 116 and 117 are provided with over 75% of the book used for this purpose. Bookkeeping experience is necessary, and some accounting is also required to understand these differences. Good information for churches and a must for all IRS Form 1024 not-for-profit board members. Those serving on such boards need this and some accounting primers to fulfill their responsibilities. IRS Form 1023 churches are currently exempt from the 990 filing but should seriously consider adopting the FASB 116 and 117 recommendations indicated in this book. Financial institutions providing funding of any type to not-for-profit entities will be looking for financial statements that include the not-for-profit rules of FASB 116 and 117. Rated five stars for those with accounting backgrounds and involved in financial areas of not-for-profit 501(c)(3) 1023 and 1024 organizations.

With 3.9 GPA, “A’s” in accounting and financial accounting, I would have switched to quantum physics if a professor assigned this book as text. The information is correct, but the dense writing and text style are guaranteed sleep aid. I do wish I had a modern text to recommend.

Good for the non-accountant.

I purchased this book in to prepare myself for a change of career, hopefully moving from the for-profit to the not-for-profit world. Having worked as an accountant for many years, this book was challenging but useful. I would definitely NOT recommend it for the neophyte in the accounting world.One of my pet peeves is books which have numerous typos. Having read the second edition of this book, I found way too many typos to be acceptable. This forces the reader to try to figure out what the author is trying to say rather than trying to grasp the content of the book. This is truly distracting and unnecessary.

I have looked at a number of books on the subject and this one comes the closest yet to having the kind of information I am looking for. The basic problem is that all these books think that you have a full time accounting staff. I have a degree in accounting and a MBA so I know something. For the small non profit what these books all say to do is unreasonable. The average board member has difficulty understanding a simple P & L.

Good coverage for the beginner.

This is an overall good product. There is an abundance of practice questions to choose from, and the software explains why the answer is correct. However, in the exam mode, the software only tells you if the question is wrong, and does not explain why.

I still haven't finish reading it... it is too technical and boring... I would'nt recoment this book to anyone... Sorry!

About the Author

Richard W. Ojakangas grew up on glacial till in Warba, Minnesota. He received a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a doctorate from Stanford in 1964. He taught at the University of Minnesota-Duluth for thirty-eight years and is the author of numerous articles and other publications on geology, including Minnesota’s Geology. Dick lives with his wife, Beatrice, in Duluth and celebrates his Finnish heritage whenever he gets the chance.

Richard Ojakangas is a native Minnesotan whose life has been spent in learning about and teaching Minnesota's geological history. He taught at the U of M in Duluth for over 30 years, and is the author of Minnesota's Geology, which is probably the definitive geology book on the North Star State.That book, however, is not quite meant for the casual reader (although its less imposing than many other books of the type). Minnesota has lacked a Roadside Geology style book for too long. After years without one, Ojakangas has finally written a book for the non-scientist, the latest in the Roadside Geology series, the Roadside Geology of Minnesota.It's been worth the wait.After an introduction to the geological history of Minnesota (as you might expect, the Pleistocene, with its glaciations, gets a lot of space) as well as some basic geology to get those who avoided the rock science in high school or college, the book divides into several sections based on Geography. (Northeastern, Northwestern/Central, Southwestern, Southeastern)In each section, Ojakangas gives a general overview of the Geology of that area followed by the meat of the book, Road Guides.There are plenty of photographs, maps and diagrams to elucidate the text and keep travelers oriented as they visit the various highlighted sites. I learned about plenty of sites that were just off of my route in previous travels that I will definitely visit with book in tow. I had no idea, for instance, of a beautiful beach of rhyolite pebbles lies just 3 miles north of Gooseberry Falls. I'd never heard of Chimney Rock, a spire of sandstone a few miles off of US 61 on the way south from St. Paul. In addition, I have an appreciation for places and locales I have seen, now having a better geological context for them. The composition and nature of Barn Bluff in Red Wing, for instance. I had no idea there's a fault that has shifted the layers on one side of it!Armchair amateur geologists who buy the Roadside series of volumes will not want to miss this latest volume.I most especially recommend this book, though, for any and all Minnesota travelers interested in the physical geology of the state to buy the book, read it, and then take it with you on your next road trip to, say, Gooseberry Falls, or Winona, or the Boundary Waters, or Pipestone. I certainly will!

One of the newest of this very informative series, perhaps the most qulaified person to undertake this project was chosen. Dr. Ojakangas has done a great job of reaching the nonprofessional curious. Although most of the surface geology of this sizable state is dominated by glacial deposits, Dr. Ojakangas often goes beyond the surface to dicsuss the apparent geological history in that region and to provide examples of underlying rock outcrops. Profusely illustrated with mostly color photos, diagrams and maps, it is well organized according to 4 rather distinct geological regions. About half the book is devoted to the most interesting and economically important region: the northeast, which Dr. Ojakangas is also most familiar with. Find out why Sioux Quartzite and St.Peter Sandstone, both composed of nearly pure well-rounded quartz sand grains, have such different erosional resistances and commercial uses.

I have been fortunate to have participated in a Field Trip lead by Dr. Ojakangas, and just like his lectures and field trips, he sprinkles this book with humorous anecdotes, bits of Indian Folklore, obscure facts about Minnesota's history, and of course, a lot of geology. If you enjoyed and learned a lot from Dr. Ojakangas's book "Minnesota's Geology" coauthored with Charles L. Matsch in 1982, you will be delighted with "Roadside Geology of Minnesota".The book's introduction begins with an extensive overview of Minnesota's geology. A discussion of plate tectonics with illustrative diagrams and maps, sets the stage for a review of the Midcontinent Rift System, which is responsible for the volcanic rock found along Lake Superior's shore. Beginning with Archean Time 4.5 billion years ago, down through the Proterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Tertiary, through the glacial periods of the Pleistocene, Minnesota has geological evidence of it all (except for what the glaciers may have removed or redistributed.)Following the primer on basic geology, the book is divided into four sections, based upon the regions of the State: Northeastern, Northwestern and Central, Southwestern, and Southeastern. If you know anything at all about the geology of Minnesota, you will not be surprised to find that the section on the Northeast is the longest, and the most interesting, geologically. The Northeastern section is home to the mines of the Mesabi, Biwabik and Cuyuna iron ranges, Lake Superior's scenic Highway 61, amazing road cuts, the Sudan Underground Mine State Park, classic examples of greywacke, agates, and Warba -- the home town of Dick Ojakangas. And if you thought that "Cuyuna" was an Indian word, you will be surprised to find out where it really came from when you read the book.The Road Guides in each section give detailed descriptions of the geology to be found, what caused it, and the mile marker numbers that correspond with interesting stops. From the Pipestone and Sioux Quartzite of southwestern Minnesota to the pillow basalt in Ely, from the karst country of southeastern Minnesota to the ancient Lake Agassiz shorelines in the northwest, and all the glacial lakes, till, drumlins, eskers, kames and kettles in between, Dick Ojakangas includes it all. There are many color photographs of geologic features throughout the book, many of which I recognized from field trips past.This book is great for armchair geologists. If you don't want to follow the road guides and explore further, you should still read the book. After you read it, keep it in your car, for you never know when you might be on the road and come across an interesting geological feature that piques your curiosity. Having a geologist in the car while traveling in Minnesota is something I've often wished for. Traveling with the "Roadside Geology of Minnesota" goes a long way to fill that void.

The first 40 pages give a 3.8 billion year history of the Geology of Minnesota and lay the background for the rest of the book. The rest of the book is divided into 4 geographical sections of Minnesota, common roads and the interesting things to see from a geological standpoint.I like the way the author writes, not too dry but informative. Amateurs may be doing some additional research on the geological terms and definitions used in the book but it is not over your head.This is a must have for the Amateur geologist and even some of the pros. I am a Minnesota Master Naturalist and will be using it for my own enjoyment and for tours and students.

Kennedy's Albany Cycle of novels is a remarkable acheivement by any standard. This, his first novel, is not part of the Albany Cycle of novels, and it's not remarkable, either.The book is the story of the late stages of a newspaper strike from the point of view of Bailey, a striking writer. As the strike unravels, so does Bailey. As his actions become increasingly disconnected from reality, the reality he experiences becomes increasingly surreal.One can see the future, mature Kennedy at work here, but the book is ultimately unsatisfying. I guess that's no real surprise; after all, every writer-- even great writers-- has to go through a first novel on his or her way to greatness. It's not realistic or even fair to expect a first novel to be great. This one isn't.

This is Kennedy's first novel, differing from his sequels in skirting around Albany's past and lacking the dark depths he revels in when describing the seamy underbelly of his native tone. However, in his surreal description of a heroically futile and increasingly surreal newspaper strike, he more than compensates for his reduced complexity by an emphasis instead on zany humor, absurd plot twists and a wide range of outlandish characters. Highly recommended to Kennedy aficionados who are interested in savoring a lighter touch.

This old Cassell combination dictionary and thesaurus (1998-2000) is ideal for professional English writing. I use it almost everyday, and is the only dictionary I have ever turned to so much. How so? Well, it not only tells me formal definitions, pronunciation, and etymology, etc., but offers the best ordered (logically sequenced from most similar to most general) synonym and antonym list in the world. I can find nearly any word I have ever heard and can recognize with ease and refinement in 5 minutes; just move from general meaning to specific using the synonym list. It is much better as a thesaurus than Roget's Thesaurus (which no longer dare use due to so many failures to find a word that pleases). With this Cassell's, I very rarely miss. After looking up synonyms of a synonym, you should find the specific word you need.

I had to use this textbook for my last 2 years of Music Theory class (Theory III and Theory IV). It's definitely a good text as it covers everything I needed to know and had great examples. But it could often be confusing! It seems as if it was written from the perspective of "I'm an expert on Music Theory, look what I know!" instead of a "I'm brand new to all this, please explain it as simply and concisely as possible." perspective. It will definitely teach you what you need to know, but it doesn't have the most clear, easy-to-understand explanations. Thankfully my teacher was great at simplifying the subject enough for our class to grasp the concepts.So overall, if you have to use this book, you won't be disappointed in what it offers, but if you need the theory presented explained in the simplest, most easy-to-understand way possible, then there are definitely other books and websites that'll help you a lot more.

God, I hope this textbook gets better. I'm on chapter six and am self-studying just for fun and it really obfuscates the topic. When the author(s) go out of their way to muddle an explanation you have to wonder what was their purpose.

I've been a proffesional musician for 35 years and discovered Kosta's "Tonal Harmony" during a 13 year period in which I taught music theory in Westborough, Massachusetts. As with all textbooks, this is a supplement to teaching and should NEVER replace the teacher and student dynamic. That said, this is the best music theory text in existence. It uses simple, clear language to explain the concepts of notating organized sound and it does so brilliantly. The fundamental core of tonal understanding can be best understood through the redundancy of four part writing and Kosta makes it very clear on the do's and don'ts. One critic felt that two part writing would be easier, but to come down to guide tone lines (the chromatic 3rds and 7ths) requires a complete knowledge of four part writing, which couldn't be better explained than here. I chose my own listening examples and never used the accompanying recordings. Knowing what to use in a text book is part of being a good teacher. Using this book, every student I had who took the AP Theory exam got a 5. At least 50% of my many students took the exam and I never taught to the test. At the halfway point Kosta introduces the dominant 7 chord which by itself can (and should) take a full semester as the pivotal understanding of Western Harmony is about secondary dominants. Studying atonalism and row tones are here too, and beautifully explained for the advanced student but the first five chapters will create very competent composers. The book opens with rhythm which can be daunting. Touching upon it and returning often will keep momentum. The best way to teach rhythm is with a pair of drumsticks and hemiola best displayed with the work of Stephen Sondheim. Composing and music theory is craft-not art and "Tonal Harmony" is the finest, comprehensive book on music theory in print.it's wonderful in class; just as great for self study. The accompaning workbook is handy but hardly necessary.

This book is roughly 40 times the cost any ebook should be, and it's covered with DRM. I'm legally blind, and this DRM means I can't use my normal screen readers on it and can't convert it to a PDF or other format that's easier for me to use. The publisher is more concerned with protecting its rights than providing a quality experience.

This book is a few editions back, but it really doesn't matter that much (it's not like music theory as changed that much in the past few years, got it cos I could also get workbook with two CDs to match that were relevant), why I bought it--to save $. Perfect for me as a private music teacher to prep more advanced theory lessons, WAY easier to deal with than what I had in grad school, the practically unreadable HARMONY by Walter Piston.

Background:I bought this book because some one suggested it to me as I was entering college (I'm a music major). This isn't the text used in my school-I got it as supplemental/a possible better source. At the moment I couldn't play piano (still not much of a piano player but I get the stuff).The Not so Good Stuff:This book is really technical & nit picky about terminology. You'll have an amazing nomenclature if you can get through this-really but I think some functional aspects are missing. In other words, the book does a great job at helping you to identify, label & categorize things but it doesn't do much for providing a way to develop a working functional understanding of the stuff, then again that's what the workbook is for. And finally, to be frank-this isn't an easy book Dx.Good Stuff:This book is meant to cover four semesters of theory. It covers A LOT of ground & as a single source for it all it's a price friendly text. Going through this book will definitely set you up for just about any kind of theoretical situation-assuming of course you work with the information & internalize it.

I paid $119 dollars for a new version of this book because the description saidit was new and also included the CD—which I why I specifically paid all that money for the new book. There is no CD, and there is also a half-torn sticker on the side that says “used.”

This text is a must-have for every music major. It's definitely my theory BIBLE, but my only beef about the workbook was that there was no way to check my answers to see if I was doing things correctly...
