I started to listen to this on audio book, and inadvertently started with the last disc first. I had expected that Bill was going to be using his great sense of humor, but this was just a dry book with scientific stuff, which I could look up on the internet if I really wanted. I was very disappointed that in his research about DNA that he failed to mention that the woman who took the crystalograpy x-rays literally gave up her life because she got cancer and died from taking all those xraya and it was proven that SHE really discovered DNA, not the arrogant Crick and Watson, who treated her very badly. So, Bill, you missed the mark on that one.So then I put disc one in and he started talking about the big bang theory, which he obviously believes. I just couldn't listen to any more of this. It was like being in high school again and having scientific facts crammed down our throats. Sorry, Bill, you missed the mark on this book.

This book surprised me in the amount of effort the author took to go through book after book of different sciences, both old and new, and proceeded to connect the dots into several cohesive stories about our home, planet Earth, and its residents. The biggest surprise is how little we truly know about both and just how much luck was involved that both exist in their present form. This book is an easy read and should be understandable to anyone who has a basic interest in science.Be prepared though to being overwhelmed because there is a lot of information in this book, with references to other works. This book is best read in sections allowing yourself some time to think about what you have learned; and I'm sure you are going to learn at least a few things.I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to understand what an amazing place our planet is and life that exists on it.

I have just completed Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything” for the second time. I am quite certain it will not be my last reading. I cannot think of any other single-volume book I have ever read that was as informative, entertaining, and broad in scope as this classic. Not having excelled in science, nor been much interested in it when I was younger, this gem is a massive refresher course on everything I ever learned about science, and then some.Bryson moves seamlessly from one sweeping topic to the next with great ease. Whether he is expounding upon thermodynamics, paleontology or cosmology, he helps us to grasp, to the extent that seems possible, the interrelatedness of all physical phenomona. He is particularly skillful at putting into perspective concepts of size and dimension within the universe, whether mind-bogglingly vast expanses or minuscule marvels of life’s building blocks. He not only teaches us what is known, but humbles us by emphasizing how much we do not know.Bryson also brings us biographical sketches of the greatest names in science as only an enormously talented humorist could do. Intellectual giants like Newton, Einstein, and many others, are brought to us with all their eccentricities. So many brilliant individuals were quite odd, which makes them much more human and accessible to the Bryson’s reader.There is also a moral underpinning to Bryson’s book which becomes most evident in the final chapter. Our species has, in essence, become the extinction event for so many others with which we have shared the planet. Beginning with the unsuspecting and gentle dodo bird, Bryson outlines how we have systematically brought about the termination of thousands of creatures, intentionally or through ignorance. This sobering reality makes one a bit more respectful of current efforts to save endangered species.No species, and indeed no human being, is anything other than a miracle of chance, a reality in which Bryson rejoices from his opening chapter. He congratulates each of us for surviving the cut and coming into existence against all odds. His book is humbling and thought-provoking, leaving one with a sense of awe at the grandeur of, well, nearly everything.

I read the hardcover version first, all the while wishing there were pictures, diagrams, maps, etc. I then heard of this illustrated version and ordered it right away. This adds so much to the text. Written in Bryson's easy, slightly ironic style, this book tackles subjects that are often difficult to fully grasp. Great fun and much improved with pictures!

Well written and entertaining this is not a textbook, rather Bryson attempts to create a story. The story of Earth and the people who made the critical advancements. The story of Marie Curie, Einstein, Darwin. This is a book that would make Carl Sagan proud.The book is organized into 6 parts: Lost in the Cosmos; the Size of the Earth; A New Age Dawns; Dangerous Planet; Life Itself; and The Road to Us.The first part: Lost in the Cosmos is about the big bang and the elemental beginnings of the Universe. Part 2 The size of the Earth discusses the early attempts to determine the size of the Earth in the 17th century. Part 3 A New Age Dawns is about is about Einstein’s universe and the atom and plate tectonics. Part 4 Dangerous Planet is about the interior of the planet and what lies below the surface. Chapter 5 Life Itself is the largest section comprising 161 pages. It covers the rise of life beginning after the formation of the Earth up through the Cambrian explosion. The chapter also discusses Darwin’s work on Evolution. The final chapter The Road to Us is about the rise of humans.My only issue with the book is that is a bit dated. The history sections are great, but the discussion on current events and science are out of date. This book needs an update.

The first thing to read about Viktor Frankl is his famous book, "Man's Search for Meaning," in which he tells of his experience as an Austrian Jew in Auschwitz during World War II. A man with a heroic nature, who gave inspiration to many in the concentration camps, Frankl carried his experience and philosophy on "the last freedom" out of Auschwitz and into the lives of many thousands of people. Unless one has read "Man's Search for Meaning", this autobiography may strike the reader as "So what?". But if you have read the famous one, the information provided here will all fit in place. At 133 pages, this autobiography is brief, and written in a relaxed conversation style. Some of what Frankl chooses to tell about himself is unaccountably mundane, but most of it is very worthwhile. It does have quite a few of those little details that you might be hoping to find, along with a good array of photographs. And if you want a clear summary of the philosophical and psychological influences on his life, you'll find that too. It gives an interesting glimpse into that world of German psychiatry and philosophy at the time that Freud was doing his work. In that context, one understands better the significance of Frankl's philosophy and psychiatric practice. Before the war, Frankl was already challenging his colleagues' tendency to see human nature as a bundle of psychology; he was saying that there is a real self in each person whose potentia need to be called upon to take responsibility for his/her challenges in life. After the war, that view got Frankl in trouble with a lot of people, because he refused to blame all Germans, or even all Nazis. In fact, Frankl's whole life experience and the message he shares is one of not blaming others for what has happened to you. Coming from an Auschwitz survivor who lived what he preached to the ultimate degree, it's a message that has helped many thousands of people.

I will have to read this book several more times. Reading it was like having a wonderful human being sitting next to me in my living room.

Great book! Dr. Frankl's books have such a wonderful combination of theory and his own life experiences which validate his research. They are short and easy to read even for a lay person without medical or psych background. The horrors of the Holocaust which he experienced first-hand and describes in a way that they are so real to the reader--coupled with his (well proven) theory that it is possible for a person to survive--and even thrive--after such unimaginably horrific experiences. I would highly recommend this book as well as his masterpiece "Man's Search for Meaning".

I love any work of Viktor Frankl. He writes about honorable men. He was an honorable man and I wish I encountered more honorable men as I go about my life. He was a great man and reading his book becomes a life-changing event.

I bought this book for my Justin Time-obsessed two-year-old for Christmas. And if your US child is also a fan of Justin Time (thanks Netflix!), you know that there's not a lot of Justin-Time availability here in the States. Two seasons of shows and no merchandise, until now! The book is written and illustrated by the creator of Justin Time. It's a printed form of the "Pancake Express" episode and is pretty spot-on. He loves it!

My son (almost 3 years old) has loved Justin Time since it first appeared on PBS Sprout. The stories and language are a little advanced for him, but they are accessible enough to entertain him and, as a parent, there is a lot to love about this series. I found the book when I went looking for DVDs of Justin Time (which I have not found) and I ordered it just to see how my son liked it. This has become a must-read at every nap-time and bed-time since it arrived. Brandon Scott James' illustrations are terrific and the story is close enough to the TV episode to be recognizable, but different enough to be interesting on its own. Like the series, I think the language and concepts (such as the illustration of how coal is burned to power the steam engine) are probably aimed at an older kid, but I don't mind stretching our son since he seems to grasp it well enough and he is very engaged. The writing in this book is also quite good and certainly advanced enough (with complete sentences and such) to be a good read even for kids with solid reading skills. We love this book! I've just ordered the only other book in this series, but I hope they plan to publish many more. My wife and I feel like this fits well among the wide variety of books we read with our son.

My son is obsessed with the Justin Time tv series. We can't wait for the merchandising to begin in the US, but this book made a wonderful Christmas present. He asks to read it every night at bedtime.

I bought this after hearing Chip Ingram speak about this book on the radio. It caught my attention and I said "I have to buy this book". Although I am not married I have been dating my boyfriend for just over 2 years. I thought this would be a good book to read before we decide to step up our relationship. We started reading it the day I got it and we aren't done but even the introduction and frist chapter are eye openers.

I know the title of this book is Marriage That Works so you automatically think it's only for married couples, however, if you are a single person who wants to marry and you want your marriage to work well, you need to read this BEFORE you even get engaged. Chip Ingram peels away all of the layers and tells you from personal experience what it takes to have a great marriage; a marriage you look forward to.Chip speaks fairly and squarely to both men and women. There are no taking sides. In the chapter Is There A Woman In The House? he reminds us that men and women have equal standing yet we have different roles then he breaks down how those roles look.Chip takes a strong stand for women. I pumped my fist when he said: "Equality between men and women is a good thing." The reader sees through his pen how valuable women are to the kingdom of God and to Jesus himself. His love for his wife Theresa flows through every sentence and lets you clearly see that after God, she is the reason he is the man he is today. She is at the foundation of every accomplishment. He values her presence in his life in a very special way. There's a beautiful example of how a wife submits to her husband beginning on 109 that you must read.When I read the chapters specifically directed at men, I thought, oh my goodness, God requires a lot of men and I'm not sure many know this in a way they need to know it before saying I do. If you want God's view of how a man shows up in marriage, those chapters are a MUST read for every man.Marriage That Works walks you through biblical models and God's original design for marriage. Chip says, "God doesn't give us mediocre goals to match our human standards, he gives us divine goals to bring us up to his." Amen! Chip not only tells you how this looks, but he also shows you how to build a marriage that pleases God in every way.Thanks, Chip for writing an excellent book filled with godly wisdom and application. "Marriage That Works" by Chip Ingram is a good title for anyone of any married age who really wants to improve their marriage. Around 240 pages, some of the topics addressed include:1. Biblical definition of submission (hint: it's not dictatorship!).2. How mutual submission works in a marriage.3. As the husband and wife get closer to God, they get closer to each other.4. How men can better love their wives.5. What sacrificial love is not.6. How the role of American women has changed over the years.7. Financial, relational, and spiritual objectives for the husband.8. 3 priorities for the wife.Well-written, readable, and full of good spiritual and practical insights, anyone can benefit from this title. I was given a review copy by Baker Books in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.

My review of Marraige That Works by Chipingram: First impression was the hardback cover with the slip cover which speaks quality, nicely made and ironically matches the message being told in this book about a long lasting marriage that works. Anything worthwhile takes work and the author Chipingram hits it home in his writing on this subject including the presentation of his book. I like that he includes cited references in the notes section at the back of his book that he is diligent in his research on this subject. There are reflection and discussion sections at the end of the chapters which provide the reader with actual application of what was just written in that particular chapter. Chipingram has an honesty or transparency in his writing about what it will require to have a great marriage including some of his own experiences. He also shares a brief history of his wife's background-being transparent- the realism of a lot of family "semi-functional" origens. In addition, he puts the focus on God's original plan for marriage and how this relates and reveals Christ's love to the world and His commitment to the church. This is an overall good read not only is the book good quality in materialship but also the subject matter well worth glorifying God and saving marriages putting the reader on the right perspective. I really enjoyed the first three books, but I was very upset by the ending of the third book. It was cheating, end of story. I've spent the last week wondering how the author could possibly reconcile the lying and cheating of the male character when it was stated clearly in the previous books that he was a man of his word. This book turned a great romance into a tragic character study.********* SPOILERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! **************************1 ) he lied to her for six months in the first book, and then he lied and cheated on her repeatedly in this book. Cheaters always say two things: one, they meant nothing to me and two, it's your fault you're not giving me what I need so I had to get it somewhere else. The only remorse they seem to feel is remorse about getting caught. Calloway's attitude is very cold and callous in this regard, he doesn't really care how badly he has hurt her because his own needs are more important. He deceives her for months, again, rather than break up with her. It is not romantic to have sexualized experiences with subs behind your girlfriends back in order to try and save your relationship. It is not romantic that the male character gets so angry he has to whip his sub before he can go back and finish an argument with his girlfriend. His extreme anger issues are disturbing and his selfishness is more important than the pain he causes her.2 ) Rome never lies to him and never cheats on him. Her resistance to the "sub" way of life is due to her repeated traumas from childhood and from her last boyfriend, we are talking molestation and sexual assault, something that Cal finds to be inconvenient to his needs. His lack of empathy is very disturbing. Remember he is supposed to love her.3 ) He is also has a traumatic sexual past but has no desire to get counseling because he sees nothing wrong with destroying his relationship with the only woman he's ever loved in order to continue his previous lifestyle.4 ) Rome never gets counseling either, despite the fact that she has been repeatedly molested, stalked and assaulted..5 ) The fact that he tries to save her after being shot is ridiculous. If he had really had wanted to save her, he should've called the cops rather than try and reach her himself. I mean, he had been shot in the stomach. It is unrealistic in the extreme.6 ) he shows a lot of frustration because she will not talk to him about her past traumas. However, in the end when she tries to tell him about it, he shuts her down and says nope I don't want to hear it.7 ) it's interesting that during their D/s relationship she gets punished for not obeying him, for annoying him, for arguing with him. And yet he is never really punished for his sins. So my take away is that she has to get in line with his demands, but he never has to face the consequences of his deceptions, cheating or mistakes.8 ) The most offensive thing, however, is the attitude towards Isabella at the end of the book. He cheated with her, she destroyed their relationship, she harassed both Cal and Rome repeatedly, she held a gun on Cal - and shot him !!! - while Hank kidnapped Rome, not caring what would happen to Rome at the hands of her abusive ex-boyfriend. And yet, Cal says of her in the end 'oh but she was just depressed she's a good girl, go ahead and date her, Christopher '. Christopher being Rome's brother. I cannot imagine a more sick and perverted thing to say in front of Rome, as if Rome had not endured an attempted rape and near-loss of the love of her life because of this woman.And to make it even worse, when Rome dares to argue against this, he just gives her a "Dom" look to force her to submit to his authority, which sadly she does.Ultimately, Callaway gets everything he wants without having to face any emotional cost to his lying cheating ways. He stated several times throughout the books that he really wants to break her, that he will enjoy breaking her, and then he does break her. It's a very sad end for a woman who was so tough, smart and feisty in the beginning. People say that it's compromise, but instead it's winner take all.

Betrayed...Lied to...Misled...I am so upset right nowI am 50% done with this book and at book 4I have never been so tempted to give up! There is NO loyalty here! I hate that he betrayed her, wheather he technically did or not. And I feel betrayed. I bought into the beautiful, loyal man/Dom that wouldn't even entertain deceiving a sub that he didn't care about from book 1. So I thought, yes, he would be honorable. What went wrong? And she begs him to take her back as he's hitting on another woman! Seriously??!! My stomach just hurts!!!I just finished the book, and I am completely disappointed. If you read my blog, you know I hate giving bad reviews. I rarely do it. But I feel horrible. It seems that when you go back and read carefully, Caloway never actually cheated on Rome, but he lied to her and engaged in erotic BDSM play with other women. It reminded me a smidge of Christian and the psycho sub that he bathed, except that was once and there was no deception. And he didn't blame Anna for it. Ugh!!! I'm sorry to do this, but I didn't like this book for that reason,And had I know, I wouldn't have read the series.

I read the entire series and while I enjoyed it enough to read all four, it was not worth the crazy amount of money. I finished all 4 books in 2 and a half days. The continuum was broken a few times. First there was a best friend for about 4 pages in the very beginning of the first book then you never hear about her or from her again. Then Christopher and Jackson know each other in the second book and by the last book they had never met. Cal states in the last book that he went back to sleeping with random people and drinking. But at the end says he never slept with anyone else. Because of the price of the books I would have thought that the Author was more well written and experienced. It had a lot of potential but I feel she rushed it.

Remember in the beginning of book 1 where Rome hits Cal, because she thinks he's a liar and a cheater who hurt her friend. Well...In book 1 we start off with Rome, who is a strong women out there helping people in need, and ends up with a weak doormat, who is willing to do anything to keep the guy. This said guy, cheated on her (yes, it was cheating), and when they broke up, she wasn't eating or sleeping, but the H Cal, was out there living the life. What really got to me, was that all along he said that he's a sadist and that why he needs this, but when they broke up, he finds two girls and orders them around to pleasure themselves, but wait... he can't touch, so he's still good. And then there is Rome's brother. He's basically going behind his sisters back and dealing with Cal, and is also mooching off of Cal, and living in an apartment that Cal is paying for. His advise to his lovely sister was that, yeah he lied and cheated on you, but the problem is with you not him. You need to give him what he needs, and start submitting to this lying, cheating, b******, if you want to be happy. Oh, I would also like to date the girl the love of your life cheated on you with sis.The relationship between Cal and Rome, is what anyone would term as an abusive relationship. We have a man who feels powerful when he embraces his inner monster, and can abuse and beat on women, and we have a women (and here's the most important distinction) who is NOT at masochist, and doesn't like it when Cal hurts and hits her, but is willing to stay with him, because she can't be happy without him. But oh wait, she gets an orgasm, so it's all good, and this must me love. I can honestly say that Cal was the worst H I've ever encountered in a novel. At one point he even acknowledges that he's never going to be happy without Rome, and will never find love again, but he can give up on love, but not beating on women.
